Information The WebstaurantStore Scholarship program is now offering two $1,500 grants to eligible students to help further their education in the fields of culinary arts or hospitality. We want to reward current or prospective students enrolled in a culinary arts program or majoring in Culinary Arts or Hospitality Management. Whether you’ve already begun your secondary education or you’re in the exciting stages of choosing the right program, we invite you to apply. The scholarship program is also open to students who’ve come by their diploma through a GED program or non-traditional learning environment. By encouraging the growth and development of students from diverse minority racial groups, we hope to empower them to achieve excellence in their chosen career. Additional Eligibility This scholarship is open to students who are members of the following minority ethnic groups – American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander. Prize: One $750 scholarship Prompt: Over the past decade there has been a growing emphasis on sustainability and being “green.” This theme is only going to continue with each passing year as we trend away from fossil fuels and non-sustainable materials. With that in mind, what are three staples of the construction industry (materials, equipment, practices, etc.) that you see being phased out this decade, and what alternatives do you recommend? Information Achieve Today is offering this scholarship to students in the United States who submit a three to five minute video, audio, or essay on a topic of personal development or high performance. Banks Family Education Fund Information The Bank Family Education Fund was established by Daniel Banks, Barbara Banks, and their family to offer scholarships to students interested in outdoors, wildlife, and conservation, giving them the opportunity to further their education. The fund offers up to $2,000 yearly scholarships to current students who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 The scholarships are awarded twice annually, in April and again in October of each year. For more than 40 years the Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund has been empowering women through education. Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund (JRF) honors the legacy of an American woman of incredible spirit and determination Jeannette Rankin, the first woman to be elected to the United States Congress in 1916. Jeannette was a proponent of women’s rights and devoted her life to help women and children and stand up for social justice. When Jeannette died in 1973 at the age of 92, she bequeathed part of her Georgia estate to help mature, unemployed women workers, providing the seed money to create the Jeannette Rankin Foundation, a nonprofit scholarship fund. This scholarship was established by Mrs. Weibel-Bramwell in memory of her late husbands A. H. Weibel and A.M. Bramwell both of whom were news editors. Her son and his wife continue her legacy. Aaron Drange enrolled at CSU, Chico to do one thing: make music. He joined as many ensembles as he could. When he gave a speech in front of a class not filled with musicians, Aaron delved into the life and career of saxophonist Paul Desmond, whom he emulated and often drew comparisons to for his playing style. When one of his teachers had him give a presentation after reading a book, Aaron turned the assignment into an original recording, a song called, “The Fire”. His pursuit of perfection was nothing short of remarkable. Aaron’s family established this scholarship to honor his memory by providing support to musicians at Chico State. HFA-MUSIC

Mrs. Regina Picetti, sister of Agnes Dix and former donor of this scholarship, was one of the few female nurses in combat in the Pacific in World War II. She was a war hero and became a county health nurse in San Benito County in Hollister, CA. She died in August 1997. This scholarship was established in memory of Agnes Dix, by Regina Picette and brother, Frances Dix, to support Nursing students. Bernard Gordon Gibb, born in Nebraska in 1921, attended Wesleyan University, married Lotys Sandstorm and served in the U.S. Army. He was a tank commander in WWII, landed in Normandy Beach on Day Six and took part in the Battle of the Bulge. After his discharge from the army he attended Pepperdine University and Stanford University, where he received his Doctor of Philosophy degree. He was a faculty member of the Stanford School of Business and Director of the Stanford University Counseling and Testing Center. He was at CSU, Chico from 1958 to 1988 serving as Chair of the Department of Psychology and then Academic Vice-President. He was also a member of the Chico City Council, chairman of the Chico Airport Commission, and chairman of the Regional California Council for Criminal Justice. This scholarship was established when Dr. Gibb retired from Chico State in 1988. He passed away in October 1999. UW-USC-GENERAL

The Beverly Wadsworth Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of the aforementioned California State University, Chico emerita professor of Physical Education and Exercise Science. Dr. Wadsworth’s professional life spanned nearly 50 years as a dedicated teacher in both the public schools and at the university level. She taught at Chico State from 1968 to 1998. Over the years, she educated and supervised many students who were preparing to enter the teaching profession. In addition to her classroom and scholarly activities, she was an assistant softball coach for five years during the latter part of the 1970’s and the early 80’s. Professor Dick Trimmer, chair of the Physical Education and Exercise Science Department, noted that "Dr. Wadsworth had a very positive influence on all the students she taught. She promoted professionalism with her students and got them involved in physical education and health professional associations. CME-KINE

Background:This endowment was established in memory of Dr. C. Robert Laxson. “Bob” was a member of Chico State College staff for 22 years. He was active in many music organizations in Northern California – Phi Mu Alpha Professional Fraternity of the National Conference of Music, National Piano Teacher’s Association, California Teacher’s Association, and the Association of California State College Instructors. As an outstanding pianist, he accompanied many nationally known artists at Chico State and in the Bay Area. He died April 27, 1968 at the age of 55. In 1970 the Laxon Memorial Scholarship Fund was combined with the Music Department Scholarship Fund to be called the Laxson Memorial Music Scholarship. Contributions in memory of Suzanne Tyra and William H. Sheldon have also been donated to the Laxon Memorial Music Scholarship. HFA-music

Since its founding in 1988, The California Transportation Foundation (CTF) has awarded $1.3 million in scholarships through December 31, 2019. To qualify for CTF scholarships, recipients must be intent on a career in transportation and be U.S. citizens, permanent residents or documented, international students.

Recepient will be invited to a meeting of the California Retired Teachers Association. The Laura E. Settle foundation was established in the early 1950s in memory of Carlota’s primary founder and first president, Laura E. Settle, a retired Pasadena school teacher, oversaw the creation of Carlota in 1929 and established its reputation as the primary protector of teachers’ pensions. CME-SOE

Acceptance in teaching credential program. Must have attended high school in Glenn or Tehama County. Minimum overall GPA 3.0. Funds will be distributed at the onset of the *Phase II *teaching program, whether fall or spring. In 1993, President Dorothy Rinehart asked Marvin Woodstrup to develop a scholarship program for Carlota, Mt. Lassen, Division 9. Prior to 2011, the scholarship program consisted of a panel of retired teachers who developed criteria, and selected and met with candidates who were graduating seniors from high schools in Glenn and Tehama Counties. One scholarship of seven hundred fifty dollars was awarded to a deserving student from each county. These two scholarships were provided by donations from retired teachers of Div. 9. CME-SOE

It was Anne’s wish that her daughters, also contributors to this endowed scholarship, continue her legacy of support for students at Chico State. The intention of this scholarship is to provide support to nursing students who reflect Christina’s radiant spirit and who, like her, put 100% of themselves into their work and life. The family and friends of Christina Leen Foster established this scholarship in her memory to provide support to nursing students at Chico State. Christina was a nursing student nearing the end of her studies when she was diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, she passed away September 12, 2008 at the age of 24. NSC-NURS

She was 97. Coakley was born on Dec. 23, 1916, in Columbus, Ohio. She received her diploma nursing degree in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1943 and served in the U.S. Ary Nurse Corps during World War ll, stationed in the United States, the Philippines, and New Guinea. After the war, she earned her bachlor’s in nursing from the University of Colorado, her master’s in education from Indiana University, and, later, her doctorate in education. NSC-NURS

He was a student here in the late 60’s early 70’s. He worked his way through college by showing and shearing sheep. He went to auctioneer’s school and became the leading auctioneer (sheep) on the West Coast. He also raised some outstanding Suffolk sheep on his ranch in Sonoma County. He was quite active in the livestock industry until his death from cancer at a very young age. The colonel title is normally attached to all auctioneers. AGR-AGR

As a female athlete in Northern California she played a baseball game in Dunsmuir, CA with Babe Ruth during a promotional tour. Her brother, Charlie L. Nutson, left Cora as a beneficiary of his estate and Cora decided to leave a significant benefit to the students in her old school district. UW-USC

Later, he worked for GMAC in Southern California and Tucker Sno-Cat Co. in Oregon. From 1956 to 1959 he worked for Medford Air Service as a pilot and mechanic. In 1960, Newton co-founded the Aero Union Corporation in Redding, which moved to Chico in 1963. One of Newton’s specialties was involvement in engineering challenges and FAA certifications. Newton was known for the pride he felt for the people who made up Aero Union. She majored in Computer Science and minored in Business and went to work for KVIE, in Sacramento. In July 1988, she was killed in an automobile accident. Dave Lantis received his bachelor’s degree from Adams State College in 1939. His M.A. was completed at University of Cincinnati in 1945, and his Ph.D. was earned at Ohio State University in 1950. Dave, also known as “Mr. California Geography,” had many accomplishments including giving innumerable lectures, traveling on all seven continents, and being the senior author of a popular textbook on California that is still in print. She later went to Stanford University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts, with distinction in social sciences in 1953. Dr. Peevers also received a National Institute for Mental Health fellowship at the University of Nevada, Reno, and received her Ph.D. in psychology in 1970. In 1973, she accepted a faculty appointment to California State University, Chico retiring in 1992 as professor of sociology. Her research was often published, and she served on the University Foundation Board of Governors, the Faculty Senate, the Women’s Faculty Association, the Society for Research in Child Development, the Society of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, and the League of Woman Voters. Cindy Ratekin was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1970, she graduated from Katella High School in Anaheim, California and later received her associate of arts degree in early childhood education and her bachelor’s degree in social sciences from Pacific Christian College. She then moved to San Diego to direct her first preschool while attending San Diego State, where she received her Master’s degree. After relocating to the Los Angeles area, Cindy directed the early childhood special education program at Easter Seals from 1978 to 1982. She earned her Ph.D. at UCLA in 1990 in education psychology. Cindy married Gary Bess, a social worker, in April 1986. The family relocated to Chico, CA in 1991 as director of the Child Development Lab at Chico State and maintained her position until spring 2002. BSS-CHLD

This scholarship endowment was established by a gift from the Chico Health Center corporation, which no longer exists. During her lifetime, Ethel E. Robinson, both prior to the formation of the corporation, and after the incorporation, gave generously of her time, knowledge, and training to promote the welfare and relieve the suffering of the unfortunate citizens of the City of Chico. She actively carried out the purposes and objectives in her capacity as a registered nurse. Ethel also helped establish the nurse training program in the is community, particularly at Chico State, through the creation of scholarships. NSC-NURS

Evelyn was a graduate of Hunter College and received a master’s degree from New York University. In 1973, after a career as a school and community health educator, she moved to California. Soon after, she was diagnosed with diabetes and found little information was available for diabetics. So, she became a diabetes educator and helped to start educational programs to help people live with the disease. After serving as president of the Sonoma County Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, she co-founded the Diabetes Society of Sonoma County. After years on the diabetes board she retired but was named director-emerita for her dedication and many contributions to the organization. BSS-HCSV

OUR PROGRAM ExtremeTerrain is offering two $2,500 scholarships, one for the fall semester and one for the spring Semester to eligible students pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Research, Land Use, Earth and Atmosphere Studies, Sustainable Land Management, Parks and Recreation, or Sustainable Agriculture Systems. Fannie Mae McDaniel graduated from Barnard College and attended law school at Columbia University. After working in a law firm in New York for six years, she and a friend decided to travel the world where she met her husband, George McDaniel. They settled in San Francisco in the 1960s and later moved to Chico, CA. Fannie Mae McDaniel took classes at Chico State until she was eighty years old. A professor noticed her absence in his class in 1995 and was found a week later in the woods, dead from disorientation from diabetes. HFA-ENGL

She attended Willows schools and graduated from Glenn County High School (now Willows High School). She went to Chico State Normal (now CSUC) where she obtained her degree and credentials in 1932. She was inducted into the Glenn County Educator’s Hall of Fame in 1982 and in 1990, Miss King was inducted into the Chico State Athletic Hall of Fame. She was a charter member of Willows Alumni Association. Miss King was an energetic, generous, and gracious lady who influenced many of Willows’ young people and this scholarship will carry on her “gift” of teaching to new teachers who will influence other young people. Preference given to students with financial need but not required. Frank Burk joined the faculty at CSU, Chico as a member of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in 1968. He taught 37 years at Chico State and Butte College before retiring in 2004. Following retirement, he taught an additional two spring semesters at CSU, Chico. Frank is the author of two books, while the second one was released by the Mathematical Association of America in May 2007. Math was his lifelong passion, which is why he wanted to establish a scholarship to support Mathematics majors at Chico State. NSC-MATH

Major in the College of Agriculture This scholarship was established in 1955 in memory of Fred L. Shanks, a community and agricultural leader who was a partner in the Mills Orchards Corporation in Hamilton City, where he began working in 1917 after attending the University of California (Berkeley) College of Agriculture. He rose from the position of foreman to become general superintendent. In 1945 he joined James Mills and Alfred Tisch as a partner. He was active in numerous state and local organizations, including the Northern California Growers Farm Labor Association, the California Beet Growers Association, Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge, Commonwealth Club, and Chico Rotary. He also served as chairman of the Hamilton Union Elementary School Board, and was an executive board member of the Boy Scouts’ Mount Lassen Area Council. He was active in the newly formed agriculture program at Chico State as chairman of the Agriculture Committee. He had two children, a son, Fred Shanks, who passed away, and a daughter, Barbara Copeland, who lives in Chico. AGR-AGR

Major: Nursing Financial need Gail’s parents, Keith and Kay Peterson, established this scholarship in the hope that her goal of service could still be realized by helping deserving nursing students complete their training. Gail Peterson graduated Cum Laude with a BA in English Literature from Chico State in 1974. She entered the nursing program and graduated near the top of her class in May 1989, with a BS and her nursing pin. She was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing. She worked as a nurse’s aid and student nurse at Enloe Hospital, served as a volunteer for Catalyst, a crisis center in Chico for battered women, and she tutored college and high school students. Sadly, Gail died in 1989 at the age of 37 following an illness resulting from brain cancer. Gail’s mother, Kay Peterson, died in 2005 following a five year illness with Parkinson’s disease. NSC-NURS

Watters graduated from Chico State in 1957 with a BS in Civil Engineering, and received his Master’s degree and Ph.D. from Stanford. He was the dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering from 1980-1982. He retired as a professor of engineering in 1998. Lorrene D. Watters obtained a Certificate in Business from Chico State in 1956, and worked as an administrative operations analyst for the vice president of student affairs until 2000. ECC-CE

Education was a high priority with Gary. He also earned a MBA from Golden Gate University and did graduate studies at the University of Virginia. Tamzen Stringham graduated in Economics and then completed a masters in Agriculture Economics at Oregon State University. Gene Kimler was raised on a corn and cattle operation in Blandensville, ILL. After WWII he attended and graduated from Colorado State University in Agriculture Business. He owned and operated a small cattle and hay business in Grass Valley and Auburn. He was very supportive of the local FFA and 4-H. He believed in giving back to his community. He always felt that higher education was the key to a successful future. Education was the one thing that never could be taken from you. This belief came from being raised during the depression and experiencing the loss of the family farming operation. One Stanley W. Strew scholarship opportunity is available for students interested in careers in the pest management industry. This scholarship is sponsored by the California Association of Pest Control Advisers (CAPCA) and administered by the Stanley W. Strew Educational Fund, Inc. The CAPCA scholarship will provide $3,000 to a selected college student. The scholarship recipient will be selected by the Stanley W. Strew Board of Trustees. Eligibility and Priority Applications are available for students who are currently attending college in an agricultural/horticultural related field or who are entering or returning to college in an agricultural/horticultural related field in the fall of 2022. Priority will be given to students at the junior or senior standing in the fall of 2022. Master’s degree/ doctorate students are NOT eligible.
