Scholarships at Crafton Hills College

William “Bill” Ahlborn is an alumnus of Crafton and also a purple heart recipient as a retiree of the US military. Bill and his wife Paula, have established an endowed fund at Crafton to help support the Earth Sciences program. As part of the support an annual scholarship is provided to an Earth Sciences major who has a minimum GPA of 2.5, has demonstrated a financial need, and who will continue with a minimum of 8 units in the fall. Preference and special consideration for students who are continuing at Crafton and/or who are considered to be re-entry students.

Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary organization of women educators dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding. Two of the main purposes of this organization are “to promote high standards of education and thereby strengthen the status and advancement of the education profession” and “to promote educational and charitable projects and activities, sponsor scholarships, further and maintain worthy standards in the field of education and to cooperate with worthy community programs relating to education and charities”. Criteria: Awarded to a student residing in the Inland Empire area; majoring in Education or a related field (school counseling, school psychology, speech pathology, Library science); must be transferring to a 4-year university in the fall; and a minimum 2.5 GPA. Student must also agree to attend one Beta Iota, Yucaipa Chapter meeting within 12 months of being awarded the scholarship.

The Campos Paramedic Award was established to support students who have successfully completed the CHC Paramedic Program. It was established by Nicolas Campos who was, and continues to be a major supporter of the Emergency Medical Services at Crafton. The ideal candidate will have shown dedication throughout the program. Criteria: minimum 3.0 GPA,

Leroy “Bubba” Balch was born in Topeka Kansas and spent his early years in Kansas. Moved to Colton CA. and graduated from Colton Union High School in 1949 where he excelled in sports. After graduation Leroy joined the Navy and served 4 years during the Korean War. He was assigned to the Pentagon and also served on a sub-tender out of Norfolk VA. Bubba joined the Redlands Fire Department in 1958, attaining the rank of Captain, and served for 32 years until his retirement in November of 1990. He was one of the most respected Captains in the Redlands Fire Department. Those who served under Capt. Balch considered him a great friend, boss and leader. He was always supportive, loyal and always greeted his fellow firefighters with the smile and encouragement. The firefighters that Bubba served with in Redlands referred to him as “the Pied Piper of the Redlands Fire Department” because of his relationship with the youth of Redlands. The kids were always welcome visitors. The youth of Redlands vision of a Firefighter was Fireman Balch. There are firefighters scattered around the Inland Empire, including Redlands, who became firefighters because of Capt. Balch. Leroy’s charm and wisdom inspired, encouraged, soothed, and strengthened the people around him. Bubba is a part of many wonderful memories stored in the memory banks of many friends and family as well as the memories that he left with the thousands of kids in Redlands. Like the vision of that smiling, forever young, Captain Leroy Balch, of the Redlands Fire Department—greeting them at the station or waving to them from the bright red fire truck. This memorial scholarship has broadened that smile. The Capt. Leroy “Bubba” Balch Memorial Scholarship has been funded by his wife Marilyn “Molly” Balch and family, his longtime friend Dr. Bob Percy and Bubba’s many friends. Criteria: Recipient must be receiving a certificate from the Firefighter I Basic Training Academy. Preference for student who is from Redlands or Colton.

This scholarship was established in memory of Carla Thornton, a veteran of the US Air Force who worked a Crafton Hills College from 2016-2018 and was instrumental in establishing the Veterans Resource Center. Criteria: awarded to a student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who is transferring to a 4-year university in the fall and who is also pursuing a career in the field of social work or where they are in a position to help others.

Charlie and Tommi Ng have served in higher education and dedicated their careers to public service. Charlie graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from San Diego State University, a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Redlands, and a Master of Science in Advanced Management from Claremont Graduate University. Charlie has worked in various public sector positions for over 24 years serving as a Director of Facilities, Vice President of Administrative Services, and Vice Chancellor of Fiscal Services. Tommi graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources from California State University, San Bernardino and a Master’s in Human Resource Management from National University. Tommi has worked in the public sector for over 17 years serving in various Human Resources positions and is serving as the Assistant Director of Human Resources at the City of Redlands. The two met while working at the San Bernardino Community College District and established this scholarship to provide opportunities to students interested in advancing their education and pursuing work in administration and public service. Criteria: Business/Public Administration major with career goal of working in education or a gov’t. public service organization; min. 3.0 GPA; student may be continuing or transferring in the fall.

Chief Dave Golder Honorary Scholarship – Dave Golder began his long and distinguished fire service career in 1968. By 1982 he was appointed the Training Officer for the San Bernardino Unit of the California Department of Forestry. While assigned to that position, he left his mark on the fire service with important things such as the development of the Incident Command System. Golder was also responsible for the development and implementation of San Bernardino County’s first Haz-Mat response teams and the First Urban Search and Rescue Task Force. The San Bernardino County Training Officers Association began this scholarship to honor Golder. He served three separate terms, as President of the Training Officers Association for a total of ten years. Criteria: Financial need (BOG waiver eligible); military personnel; diverse populations; 3.0 GPA; acceptance into the Crafton Hills College Fire Academy.

In loving memory of Diana Gloria Harrison Martinez, a beloved daughter, wife, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, mentor, committed light giver and source of positivity who passed away suddenly in June 2017 at the age of 45. For over 25 years, Diana embraced public service through her leadership at the family-owned newspaper group. She managed the papers with professionalism and grace, tirelessly seeking out and highlighting the endeavors, accomplishments and spirit of a community she regarded as family. Diana’s warmth, exuberance and compassion are deeply missed, and her memories are forever cherished. This scholarship was established in 2018 by her parents, Bill and Gloria Harrison to honor her by carrying on and continuing the good works and support of the many organizations and charities, children, youth and young adults she and her family support and encourage. *Awarded to a female student who has completed at least 24 units at Crafton and will be continuing her studies at Crafton in the subsequent fall semester. Preference given to student studying to become a respiratory therapist.

Dr. Cheryl A. Marshall has dedicated her career to higher education, beginning as an instructor of undergraduate and graduate courses in management, organizational behavior, and human resource development. She worked at Crafton Hills College for nine years serving as Vice President of Instruction and President. In 2016 she accepted the Chancellorship of the North Orange County Community College District where she established a District-wide Leadership Academy, and provided support for the Anaheim Union Educational Pledge and North Orange Promise Program. Dr. Marshall earned her doctorate of education from USC and her master of arts in industrial/organizational psychology from California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). Dr. Marshall’s passion for developing people and organizations has been a primary focus throughout her career. Dr. Marshall established this scholarship in 2018 to recognize and provide support for students who have provided leadership and service while achieving academic success at Crafton Hills College.

Dr. Daniel Bahner was a member of the English Department beginning his career at Crafton Hills College in 1991 and serving the campus until his untimely passing in 2015. During those twenty-four years Daniel served the campus in so many ways, leading the campus into new areas and creating new programs including; Chair of the English Department, President of the Academic Senate, Co-Founder of the Honors Program, Development of Supplemental Instruction and Learning Communities, Director of the Crafton Hills College Foundation. Daniel will always be part of the fabric of this campus, and remembered as an inspiring educator, a recalcitrant optimist, a rugged individualist, an instigator of BHAG’s, a walking History book, an endless creator of catchy acronyms, not to mention a tireless teacher, mentor, sage, confidant, colleague and friend. Family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Daniel Bahner established this endowed scholarship to celebrate Daniel’s commitment to the campus and the range of successful impacts he made here. Daniel Bahner was, in fact, the person who most exemplified the true spirit of Crafton Hills College. Criteria: Must be a full time student and active in the Honors Program. GPA to be 3.25 or higher and student must be continuing at Crafton or transferring to a 4-year institution.

Edward F. Taylor Memorial Scholarship – An attorney, Ed Taylor was well known for his knowledge of water law and his service as a Redlands City Attorney. Active in a wide range of community affairs, he brought a rich background to the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees, on which he served from 1967 until his untimely death in 1985. He had a great knack of bringing people with divergent views together in a common cause. He was a founding member of the Crafton Hills College Foundation and a dedicated booster of student scholarships. Criteria: Crafton Hills College graduate with special emphasis in English or Communications; cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; transferring to a four-year institution to complete a B.A. or B.S. degree.

San Bernardino Community College Trustee (Frank) & Assembly Majority Leader (Eloise) established this scholarship as an embodiment of their love and commitment to students beginning their higher education or career at a community college. Frank was an administrator and counselor before being elected to the SBCCD Board of Trustees. Eloise was a student at SBVC and their son Kristofer graduated from CHC. Recipients must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, may be a continuing or transferring student, show that they have contributed to their community and be preparing for a career in education or law that directly or indirectly benefits the community.

This scholarship is intended to reward student vegan activists who have promoted messages and behaviors that are 100% plant-based and free of animal exploration. Preference for this award is given to students who are vegan; however, students who have demonstrated activities to promote veganism and animal activism are also eligible. Criteria: Student must be a continuing Crafton student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Awarded to a student continuing enrollment at Crafton Hills College; emergency services career; GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Raymond Pryke was born in England in 1923. At age 18 he enlisted in the Royal Air Force and was sent to Texas for flight training. He was among the forces at D-Day flying over Normandy to protect the invading US forces. After the war, he first studied at the Royal Naval Academy, then finished his degree at Trinity College, University of Toronto. He had developed a love for the US during his time flight training and relocated to Los Angeles. He developed a very successful career in real estate in both the LA area and the high desert (Hesperia area). Pryke became a US citizen in 1954, although he retained his British and Canadian citizenship as well. He acquired a newspaper and embarked on a career in journalism. Over time he founded, owned or acquired ten newspapers. At the time of his death in February of 2015, he was the owner and publisher of Valleywide Newspapers, based in the High Desert. Passionate about exposing political corruption and the right to free speech, Pryke was an astute researcher and consummate storyteller. He also believed in the importance on involvement in one’s community. The Raymond Pryke Honors Scholarship pays tribute to Ray Pryke’s interests and abilities and will be awarded to a student in the College Honors Institute who has demonstrated academic excellence, research skills, and overall involvement in the Crafton Hills College and College Honors Institute communities. The scholarship recipient should be graduating from CHC and transferring to a four-year institution. Criteria: student must be an active participant in the CHC Honors Program; have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher; will be transferring to a 4-year institution in the fall semester. Preference given to students who actively serves his/her community, has participated in Honors activities, and has participated in research conferences. Also, preference will be given to students who intend to pursue further education in a field that embodies and encourages the principles espoused by Mr. Pryke such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, integrity in government and more. Students must also respond to supplemental application and essay prompts when contacted by the Honors Coordinator to be considered for this award.

Ruben Finkelstein Scholarship – Ruben Finkelstein contributed the land on which both Crafton Hills College and Yucaipa High School were built. The 500-acre College site, formerly a cattle ranch, was given to the District in 1966. Ruben and his brother Lester operated Southwest Steel Rolling Mill in Los Angeles. A very down-to-earth person, Ruben gave more than land – he participated in the CHC Foundation for 21 years and frequently attended College functions. Many still remember when the entire CHC convocation audience sang “Happy Birthday” to him on his 90th birthday. He died in 1993, leaving behind a College that is a legacy to his support for education and his love for people. Criteria: Completion of 24 units at Crafton Hills College with a GPA of 3.5 or higher with letter grades in all classes attempted; provided special service to the College; registered in 12 or more units for the next school year at Crafton Hills College.
