Scholarships at Western Illinois University

CRITERIA: • Recipient must be enrolled in a teacher education course of study, or declare pre-teacher education upon initial enrollment at WIU. • An essay on the value or rural/small schools or urban schools, dependent upon the track of their choosing • An endorsement from a rural/small school or urban superintendent, dependent upon track, who agrees to interview the applicant for a position, should a suitable opening be available • Applicant must complete a contract agreeing to teach in their selected area, rural or urban, for three years upon graduation, in the sixteen county WIU service area, which includes: Adams, Brown, Calhoun, Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, Henry, Knox, McDonough, Mercer, Peoria, Pike, Rock Island, Schuyler, Stark and Warren. TERMS: Recipients will receive a scholarship of $2,000 per year until they are fully accepted into the WIU Teacher Preparation Program (TEP). Once accepted into the TEP, recipients will receive $4,000 per year, for up to three years, until they complete student teaching. Awards are to be divided equally between fall and spring semester and applied directly to their university account. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Recipients will be required to attend at least three selected seminars, or value-added activities, each year within their chosen track. They must complete student teaching in the school size of their selected track. They will also be required to attend the GRTC gathering held each spring. Once awarded, recipients must sign a contract agreeing to teach in their selected track area for a minimum of three years upon graduation within the sixteen county WIU service area. As a Corps member YOU COMMIT TO: • Attend at least three selected GRTC training activities each year on rural and small school education issues • Graduate and become certified/licensed to teach • Complete student teaching in a rural or small school • Attend the Great River Teacher Corps gatherings held each spring • Teach for three years in a rural community within 22 specified counties

Mickey R. Price earned a Bachelor of Business in Accountancy and Information Systems from Western Illinois University in 1975. While a student, he received a full tuition talent grant through the School of Music and was also a member of Theta Chi fraternity. Understanding how scholarships helped him attain his own degree, he chose to give back to help future students. Mickey earned an Executive MBA from the Owen School of Management at Vanderbilt University in 1990. Mickey has served as a Church Administrator, and now the Chief Financial Officer, at the Paradise Valley United Methodist Church in Arizona since 2002. Prior to this role, he served as the Corporate Controller for Chickasha Cotton Oil Company and a Division Controller for multiple manufacturing plants for Dean Foods. Mickey is also active in community work as he co-founded Forever Young Musical Enterprises Inc., a non-profit organization preserving and performing Big Band jazz and swing music. He also serves in various leadership capacities and board roles within the United Methodist Church, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, The Church Network, and the Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Services, a nonprofit organization providing care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Mickey is married to Betty Brunlieb Price and is the proud father of two wonderful adult children. He remains active in the Percussive Arts Society-Arizona Chapter, where he also established a student scholarship program. Service to others and involvement in campus activities may be used as final determining factor.

Established in 2001, this was the first WIU scholarship established by Samuel Oliva, WIU Accountancy graduate and Certified Public Accountant since 1977. Shortly after his graduation and before he was 30 years old, Mr. Oliva began providing annual scholarships to Accountancy students. In 2001, he established the initial endowment that funds these scholarships. This endowment was the first endowment supporting the Accountancy program to grow to $100,000 and then $500,000. With his recent $500,000 challenge/match pledge, Mr. Oliva set the course for this endowment to grow to over $1.1 million by 2019. Income earned by this endowment will provide scholarships in perpetuity for Accountancy students. Currently, three Samuel N. Oliva scholarships valued at $4,000 each are awarded each year. Samuel N. Oliva scholarships support continuing students in Accountancy here at WIU. Please see the selection criteria below. The A.L. and Muriel Knoblauch Scholarship was established in honor of former Western Illinois University President, Dr. Arthur L. Knoblauch, and his wife, Muriel. CRITERIA: Incoming freshman Valedictorian or salutatorian of graduating class from an Illinois high school Recipient must submit final transcript confirming valedictorian/salutatorian status before funds may be disbursed.

Scholarship for undergraduate students attending Western Illinois University who are majoring in Instructional Design and Technology or Teacher Education. The Ada B. Drake and Hazel M. Oest Scholarship was established by Roscoe G. Linder to honor his sisters, Ada Drake and Hazel Oest. CRITERIA: Applicants must be full-time students who have attained junior status and have been accepted into the Teacher Education Program in the College of Education; A cumulative grade point average of 3.5 is required and 65 semester hours must have been completed; Because of the demand for good teachers the donor feels that the recipient should be willing to teach for at least two years after graduation.

The Alice Irene Gardner Schulze and Irene M. Schulze Wilcox Scholarship was established by William E. Schulze in memory of his grandmother, Alice, and his aunt, Irene. The Alpha Delta Kappa-Alpha Chi Chapter Honorary Teachers Sorority ScholarshipFund was established by members of the sorority. The Alphons J. Richert Scholarship in Psychology Clinical/Community Mental Health was established in his memory by his wife, Ruth. The CSP Alumni ACPA Scholarship was established by alumni of the CSP program. It is awarded to a CSP student who has a genuine interest in becoming involved in the ACPA organization. HISTORY: Dr. Bettye D. Thompson served as a faculty member from 1978 through 1995 and was originally hired as a faculty member in Home Economics now the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. In 1985 she was named first director of Western Illinois University’s interdisciplinary Master of Arts gerontology program until her retirement in 1995. This Scholarship was created to recognize her strong work ethic, commitment, and perseverance in the field of Gerontology and to the students who share these qualities; individuals who see the importance of working hard and then putting those skills and knowledge to the good of mankind. The criteria was revised in September 2015 to reflect an increase in the award amount from $250 to $500. CRITERIA: Class level: Student must a be at least a Sophomore and have completed at least 9 semester hours of the following: Gerontology 200 Introduction to Gerontology, Psychology 423G Psychology of Adulthood and Aging; and Sociology 405 Sociology of Aging in Rural and Urban America or three semester hours from the approved list of electives. The concept for Beu Jeans for Scholarships materialized during a Beu staff retreat when an employee requested a jeans day during Homecoming week, and that perhaps employees would contribute something in exchange. Beu employees may contribute $5 on Fridays for the privilege of wearing blue jeans to work, and those contributions support the Beu Jeans scholarship, which assists students preparing to enter the health field. HISTORY: This account was established in Nov 2013 by a donation from the Piersons. Bob was a Professor at WIU in the College of Education for 30 years, retiring in 1990. He was named teacher of the year in 1978. Donna received her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1965 and her MS-ED in 1979 from WIU. She was a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority and enjoyed teaching. Alana and Jeremy Brzozowski reside in Canada and established this scholarship to provide assistance and recognize the success of a first-year CSP graduate student. CRITERIA: To apply for this scholarship, students must be enrolled in full-time studies at Western Illinois University, pursuing a graduate degree in the College Student Personnel Program. Applicants should be in their first term of the program and must have demonstrated exceptional skills and leadership in their contributions to both the CSP cohort/academic experience and their student affairs practice as they have made the transition into graduate studies. To be considered for the scholarship, students are required to submit an essay explaining their candidacy.

The Carol and Bill Myers Education Scholarship was created by Carol and Bill Myers. Carol and Bill met while attending WIU in 1968, and married September 5th, 1970. Carol graduated WIU in 1972 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She also earned a M.S. in Education from NIU. Carol taught second grade in the Schaumburg District 54 and St. Charles Community school district. Clifford (Bill) Myers graduated from WIU in 1971 with a B.S in Industrial Technology and a certificate in Education. He also earned a M.S. in Technology from NIU. Bill helped bring the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity to campus in 1970. He taught in the Applied Technology Dept. at Hoffman Estates High School and later was the Technology Coordinator at Schaumburg High School. They hope to assist an appropriate recipient with support in achieving their goals to become an educator.

The Charlene G. Callison Fashion Merchandising Scholarship was established in July 2003 by Dr. Charlene G. Callison and her husband Dr. Larry T. Balsamo. Dr. Callison retired from WIU in the spring of 2004 after 37 years of service in the Department of Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising and Hospitality. When she joined the faculty in 1967 she was one of the youngest members of the faculty in the history of the University. She rose from the rank of instructor in the department to full professor and chair of the department. Besides teaching hundreds of students over the years, Callison was instrumental in coordinating significant events at WIU, such as former WIU President Ralph Wagoner’s inauguration, Western’s 90th birthday and activities during the University’s Centennial celebration. She created and organized events through her department such as the annual Children’s Shopping Mall in December, and the Occasion to Remember bridal show and numerous special occasion dinners, including etiquette dinners for the WIU and Macomb communities. It was also during her tenure at WIU that she wrote the fashion merchandising curriculum; opened the School Bell Boutique, and oversaw the creation of The Daily Grind Coffee House, a student-run business in Bayliss-Henninger Halls. Callison graduated from North Texas State University and Texas Women’s University where she received her Ph.D. She started her professional life as a home economics teacher in the Dallas school system, but soon went to New York City where she worked in the fashion industry before coming to Macomb and WIU. The Chef John Scholarship was established by Mr. John R. Lawrence to award a scholarship to a student majoring in Dietetics. Delano Kruzan graduated from WIU in 1960 with a Bachelor of Education degree in Spanish and later obtained a Masters of Arts in Spanish Arts Literature. HISTORY: Dr. DeBoeuf was a Finance professor at WIU from 1995 until his passing in 2020. With expertise in the areas of corporate finance and multinational corporate management, he was known as a professor who truly cared about the well-being of his students. He went above and beyond to ensure their success in understanding difficult material as well as instilling confidence in their abilities. His kind nature and sense of humor was appreciated by both students and colleagues alike. He served as the advisor to the Investment Group from 1999 to 2011, which was then converted to back to back semesters of stock investing courses focused on managing actual WIU Foundation money. Dr. DeBoeuf received his doctorate from Louisiana State University after successful careers with Allstate Insurance and General Binding Corporation. Upon his sudden passing, his siblings, Mike and Jim DeBoeuf and Patty Krisman, gave generously to begin this scholarship in their brother’s memory. Having a deep understanding of their brother’s passion for teaching and generous nature to those less fortunate than himself, it was their hope that this scholarship would honor his devotion to students and his love of WIU. Dr. Lavery graduated from WIU in 1976 witha BS in Home Economics. She is an Assistant Professor at the Marshall University School of Medicine. HISTORY: The Western Illinois University Foundation will hereby establish a scholarship endowment per the terms of this agreement, to become effective on such date as the minimum funding requirements for an endowed scholarship fund have been received and accepted by the Foundation. This scholarship endowment fund has been established by Dr. Marion Blackinton to provide financial assistance to a sophomore, junior, or senior WIU student majoring in one of the degree programs offered in the Department of Kinesiology. Blackinton, a 1990 inductee into the Western Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame, was instrumental in the founding of the Gateway Athletic Conference and in the continuing development of the women’s athletic program. This scholarship is a memorial for Eric Hill, an outstanding individual, dedicated to serving his family, his church, his country, and his community. He was a 2000 graduate of Macomb High School and a 2006 graduate of WIU, having earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration. His passion was for law enforcement and his professional career included employment with the Macomb Police Department, the Illinois National Guard, and Meador Investigations. His dedication to family made him a wonderful father and a loving husband, and his likable personality and generosity made him a respected man who had many dear friends. He was an active volunteer in his church, teaching children’s Sunday school classes. He also served in his community as a volunteer for multiple organizations and fundraising events. Although his life was abruptly cut short at the age of 28, Hill’s legacy of helping others lives on through those who knew and loved him. Michael Meador is a man of admirable character and great integrity. In their time of tragedy and uncertainty, he took it upon himself to go far above and beyond to provide support and security for Eric’s grieving family. His selflessness, compassion, and servant’s heart has created a lasting impression and great amount of gratitude with those he has impacted. HISTORY: This scholarship was established by Ray and Diana Goff in April 2002 to provide scholarship assistance to talented and needy students enrolled in teacher education. Both Ray and Diana Goff graduated from Western Illinois University receiving their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Ray Goff taught in Macomb schools and served as the principal at Macomb Junior/Senior High School. He retired in 2000. Ray passed away in 2015. Diana Goff also taught in public schools in the region and taught in the department of curriculum and instruction at Western Illinois University until retiring in 2012. Gordy and Diane Taylor believe in the power of education. Dr. Gordy Taylor, WIU Associate Vice President for Alumni Programs Emeritus, retired in January of 2006. In May 2008, Diane retired as an English instructor at Spoon River College’s (SRC) Macomb Campus. The Gordon and Diane Taylor Scholarship was initiated by Diane with financial support from WIU alumni and friends upon Gordy’s retirement as a way to honor his years of service to WIU. The Taylors have structured their scholarship to benefit a new transfer student from Spoon River College with a preference for declared English majors. Greg Chapman served as a police officer in Plainfield, IL for six years while he attended classes at WIU. While employment expectations and a different career path kept him from completing his bachelor’s degree in LEJA, he considers WIU his university and places a high value on their graduates. HISTORY: This scholarship fund was established by Dr. Dennis Bowman in 2017. Dr. Bowman began at WIU in 1999 as a Professor in the School of Law Enforcement & Justice Administration, teaching undergraduate and graduate students in areas of policing, ethics, management, cultural diversity, and criminal investigations. He also served as the Director of the Institute for Applied Criminal Justice Studies. Prior to joining WIU, Dr. Bowman served a thirty-year tenure with the Illinois State Police, which included command positions such as Accreditation Manager, Community Policing, Inspection & Audits, Research and Development, Academic Services, Staff Services, Drug Enforcement, and District Commander. Dr. Bowman is committed to honoring the service of Illinois State Police officers and the field of law enforcement. HISTORY: James E. Shipp received his bachelor’s degree in education from Western in 1964. Shipp began his career in 1964 in the Juvenile Justice System for the State of Illinois, and later with the City of Chicago. Four years after graduating from WIU, he was selected to participate in the first National Urban Fellow class and was assigned to fieldwork with the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation in Brooklyn, NY. Shipp eventually became vice president of the Bed-Stuy Corporation until 1979. In addition to his work with the Restoration Corporation, he also served as a director of several city, state and national organizations focused on urban development issues.. In addition to serving as president and CEO of Shipp Enterprises, LLC in White Plains, NY, Shipp has maintained a commitment and dedication to public service by continuing to serve on such boards as the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, the Mid Bronx Desperados Community Housing Corporation and the Gillen Brewer School for children with disabilities. While a student at WIU, Shipp was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and was a record-setting, conference champion and national finalist wrestler. Shipp was inducted into the WIU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997 and received the WIU Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1996. Shipp also received an honorary Doctorate from WIU in May of 2018. He remains an active member of his alma mater as a member of the WIU President’s National Advisory Board. The Leroy Daniels Scholarship was established in 1986 by the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center and community donors including the late Lois Mills, WIU Librarian, in memory of Leroy W. Daniels. Daniels was employed at WIU from September 1968 until his death in August 1984. Leroy, along with his brother Joe, was one of the organizers and a charter member of the McDonough County Chapter of the NAACP (established in 1968). He served as president for more than 11 years. The Lois. E. Licht Education Scholarship was established in 2018 by her nephew, Daniel B. Licht, as a means to honor her upon her passing in September 2017. This scholarship is established by WIU 2003 Communication Alumna Minda Harts in honor of her mother, Marchet Harts who graduated from the Western Illinois University Quad Cities campus in 2004. Minda decided to “create this scholarship to help future women students of color the ability to thrive with financial assistance to help ease the burden of tuition and books. As a woman of color it is important to me for students to see there are alumni rooting for their success. It was important to put this scholarship in my mother’s name as a way to show gratitude for her rooting me on at each stage of my career. I hope the recipients of this scholarship will pay it forward to future students of color in the Communication department.” Minda holds a Bachelor’s in Communication from Western Illinois University. She has more than a decade of fundraising and sales experience and has been part of successful fundraising campaigns at The University of Texas at Austin, UCLA, and Duke. Minda is the founder of The Memo LLC, a career development company for women of color. In 2016, she was nominated as a Change Maker at The White House State of Women Summit. This annual scholarship has been established by Paul Anast to help assist members of the Sigma Chi Fraternity with their educational expenses. Paul is a Sigma Chi Fraternity and WIU alumnus who wants to help alleviate the financial burden of Sigma Chi Fraternity members in good standing who are living in the Sigma Chi Fraternity house during the academic school year. The Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship was established by members of Phi Delta Kappa at Western Illinois University. The Phillip Benne Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 by Caterpillar Global Security and Securitas Security Services USA, Inc. (through the Phillip Benne Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee) to honor deceased colleague Phil Benne. Benne earned a Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement Administration at WIU in 1975. He worked all his life in law enforcement, starting out as a police patrol officer in the city of Peoria, later becoming a field training officer, serving in the Criminal Investigations Bureau, was a K-9 officer, Special Response Team member and retiring in 2008 as lieutenant of the Technical Services Division after 30 years of service. In 1981 he received the Life Saving Award, 1986 the Distinguished Service Award, 1987 the American Legion Meritorious Service Award, and 1990 the Policemen of the Year award. After retiring, Benne was hired by Securitas as a facility security manager for the Downtown Caterpillar Campus. He was later promoted to membership in Caterpillar Global Security as a senior security professional, and was then elevated by Securitas to the position of Director of U.S. Operations for the Caterpillar Account.

Bob and Sandy Collier were dedicated educators throughout their careers. Both Bob and Sandy were born and raised in California and met while teaching elementary school in Riverside, California. Bob received his MA and PhD in education, focusing his dissertation on young children’s play.Bob, Sandy and their two young sons moved to Macomb in 1979 where Bob began his career at Western Illinois University as a professor in Early Childhood Education in what is now the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. He later served as Interim and Assistant Chair of the Department. He was a beloved mentor to many of his students and colleagues and was honored as the Outstanding Teacher in the College of Education in 1990-91. He retired in 2000. Sandy received her MS in Early Childhood Education from WIU and thoroughly enjoyed teaching first grade for the Colchester/West Prairie School District for 19 years. She worked with many student teachers during that time and received the Troyer Outstanding Mentor Teacher Award in 2004. In retirement, both Bob and Sandy have actively volunteered in organizations supporting the growth and development of young children. Upon Bob’s death in 2017, the Colliers’ family and friends established this scholarship to honor Bob and Sandy and to provide assistance to students who share their deep commitment to early childhood education.

This scholarship is in memory of Robert Lang Blakslee, who was born the first son, and fourth of five children, to Kathryn and Edward Blakslee in 1954. Robert Lang Blakslee’s life was taken prematurely at the age of 16; however, the effect that he had on the entire Blakslee family will never be forgotten. This scholarship has been funded by Carrie Van Vleet in memory of her husband, Shane Van Vleet. Shane, a native of Macomb, graduated from WIU in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He then attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Dental Medicine, graduating in 2007 with Honors. Shane was very proud of the education that he received at WIU and how it prepared him for a career in the medical field. Sheila attended Farnham, Allen Park, and Lombard schools before she graduated from Galesburg High school in 1959. She was awarded the National Defense Education Act grant to continue post graduate work at Northwestern Illinois University. She also studied at the University of Iowa, Illinois State University, and Northern Illinois University. Sheila taught at Allen Park, L.T. Stone, Steele, Nielson, Cooke, and Galesburg High Schools. She was a principal at Allen Park and Costa Catholic Academy as well as a part-time assistant to the Knox County Superintendent of Schools. She was a past member of Alpha Delta Kappa and Phi Delta Kappa. Sheila was a life member of Sigma Kappa social sorority, the Illinois Education Association, and the National Education Association. The Willis and Thermutis Christie Scholarship was established in December of 2011 to create a fund for students displaying the potential for success at Western, but at risk of not finishing their degree due to insufficient financial resources. Willis and Thermutis are the parents of three students (Anthony, Norman and Glenford) who attended Western in the 1980s. Willis and Thermutis migrated from Jamaica to the United States with ten children and despite significant financial challenges, ensured that their children were educated while also helping many other people in need.

The William “Dr. B.” and Jacquie Brattain Transfer Scholarship was established to recognize and reward a community college transfer student to Western from Hancock, McDonough, or Schuyler county in Illinois. CRITERIA: Incoming transfer from a community college Resident of Hancock, McDonough, or Schuyler county in Illinois Demonstration of academic excellence and community involvement

The scholarship was established by Wilson’s wife Winifred, daughters Stephany Joy-Newman of Macomb, and Marjory Mattly of San Diego, and colleagues and friends. CRITERIA: Graduate level, Must have completed 15 semester hours of graduate coursework at WIU, Pursuing a Master’s Degree in Reading, If no eligible applicant in Reading, graduate students from the Department of Special Education may apply.

The Wix Garner Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Charles “Wix” Garner. Dr. Garner served WIU in the Department of Physical Education from 1937 until his retirement in 1965. CRITERIA: Kinesiology major; Junior class level and have completed at least two academic years at WIU with the intent to complete a bachelor’s degree at WIU; Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA after completion of 7 semesters of university credit with a minimum of 75 credit hours; Evidence of participation in intercollegiate sports, intramural activities, sports clubs, and/or membership in university student activities; Evidence of leadership qualities as exemplified by leadership roles exhibited in department, college, and university activities.

HISTORY: Dean Susan Martinelli-Fernandez is providing the Department of Women’s Studies with $1000 from the College of Arts and Sciences general scholarship fund to be used for a Women’s Studies scholarship. These criteria are applicable only to the funds provided by the College of Arts and Sciences, and not to the Women’s Studies Undergraduate Scholarship Fund in general.
