Merit scholarships in the amount of $1,000 or more will be awarded each academic year to students who meet the following requirements: must be a U.S. citizen/permanent resident, be a current resident of Allegany County, Maryland, must have resided in Allegany County for the past three or more years, and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Home Ground is a volunteer organization in Allegany County whose mission is to increase knowledge of Allegany County’s natural assets, inspiring citizens to support sustainable use and conservation of our land and water resources. This scholarship will be awarded for the Fall semester to a deserving student who has met the following minimum qualifications: Full-time student, resident of Tri-State area, have at least a 3.0 GPA, and be enrolled in the Biology, Forest Technology, or Tree Care Technician curriculum. Applicant must submit a brief essay (no more than one page) explaining his/her plan of study, how he/she would use the money, and how it coincides with the goals of Home Ground. The awardee will be expected to meet with the Home Ground organization after the semester to present a talk about his/her work and study, which may lead to a letter of recommendation if needed by the student.
