Amanda Cates was a dedicated, four year veteran of the Normandy Police Department and worked as a school resource officer for Normandy Middle School. Her enthusiasm and love for the children that she went to work to protect made her a beloved mentor and role model; she always took the opportunity to let students know how important it was to stay in school and get a good education. Belvia Irene Scott (February 27, 1913 – March 4, 1998) was born in Nixon, Tennessee and David Wilson Smith (December 9, 1908 – February 11, 1968) was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Neither went past the 4th grade. Belvia’s parents were both deceased by the time she was 14. Belvia and David each moved to St. Louis where they dated and married. David worked 30 years on the production line for Fisher Body, a division of General Motors. Belvia held jobs outside of the home but eventually became a full-time homemaker for her family. With rural, humble beginnings and little education, Belvia and David raised three sons and a daughter, instilling in them virtues such as honesty, appreciation, hard work, generosity, and compassion. This scholarship is established to honor Belvia and David Smith for all they did for their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other family and friends. Charles Armbruster began teaching at UM-St. Louis in 1962 as a chemistry instructor and in 1964 was appointed Chair of the Division of Science. He held that position until 1968 when he became Chair of the Department of Chemistry. He was responsible for hiring chemists, physicists, and biologists until individual departments took over that role. In addition, he was mainly responsible for the technical aspects of designing both Benton and Stadler Halls. As Chair of the Division of Science and the Department of Chemistry from 1964 to 1975, Armbruster was one of the most influential figures on campus. As indicated by former Chancellor Blanche M. Touhill in her book, “The Emerging University,” during the 1963-64 academic year Armbruster was the major influence on then-Chancellor James Bugg in the effort to urge him to change his goal of establishing a large four-year institution into one that would offer graduate education through the doctoral level. Armbruster’s efforts led to the establishment of Ph.D. programs in chemistry and psychology in 1971. Charlie was best known as the favorite teacher of thousands of science students whom he taught introductory or organic chemistry. In 1992 he took an early retirement but continued to teach a full load in the department, both during the academic year and the summers, and served as the premedical school adviser until he left the St. Louis area in 1998 to settle in Florida. The family and friends of Dean Rickey George established a memorial scholarship following his untimely death in 1995. Dr. Rickey George was a professor of counseling, author of numerous journal articles and books, and noted scholar who had a lasting impact on the counseling department in the College of Education at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. A well respected, hard working and congenial colleague, Dean George assisted fellow faculty members in their research efforts, which often led to promotion and tenure. Before being appointed to the position of Interim Dean and then Dean of the College of Education, Dr. George was active in various campus committees and the faculty senate. This award honors the dedication of Associate Dean Dennis Bohnenkamp to the students of the Pierre Laclede Honors College and also will recognize the achievement and commitment to the humanities by a promising Honors College student. The Bohnenkamp fund was established by the Pierre Laclede Honors College alumni chapter at the time of Associate Dean Dennis Bohnenkamp’s retirement and donations have come from former students and UMSL faculty and staff. Further donations came as memorials after Dennis’s death in 2006. At his wish, the scholarship is intended to support the study of the humanities—especially the study of the humanities by those in other majors. Earl AuBuchon and Frances (Taylor) AuBuchon were raised in St. Francois County, in the Lead Belt region of southeastern Missouri. Earl met Frances, a friend of his sister, prior to World War II. They were married at the end of the war when Earl returned from serving overseas in the Army Air Corps. Shortly thereafter they moved to South St. Louis City where they raised 6 children. Earl worked at the same factory job for 41 years while Frances stayed at home with their children. Although Earl left high school prior to graduation to help support his family financially and Frances received no further education after high school, they placed a great emphasis on the importance of their children doing well in school. They sent their children to Catholic grade and high schools as long as they were able to do so and expected good grades from each of them. Although they could not afford to pay for their children to attend college, they supported their efforts in other ways. Both were avid readers, Earl of the newspaper all his life and in later years of western novels. Fances collected carefully selected books on everything from sewing, etiquette, and other homemaking skills to world history, art, and poetry. Of their 6 children, one attended community college, graduating from its nursing school; one attended the University of Missouri — St. Louis for a year; two graduated from UMSL with degrees in Business Administration and Chemistry; and one went on to complete an MBA at Washington University. After 36 years of marriage, Frances passed away in 1982. Earl died in 2004 at the age of 86. They would have been proud that many of their grandchildren thus far have been able to attend college. This scholarship is meant to honor the sacrifices they made for their children and the value they placed on education. Its purpose is to encourage first generation college attendance for other families. Scholarship Criteria Recipients must be Missouri residents living in St. Louis City or County. Recipients must enroll full-time at UMSL and the Pierre Laclede Honors College. Students must remain in good academic standing, as required by the Honors College, including GPA and program progression. The award will be made to students where neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university. Recipients may be new students transferring to UMSL. In November 2010, the University of Missouri-St. Louis Department of Economics was very fortunate to be able to establish an Economics Alumni Scholarship award with an initial gift from David and Leslie Banks. Candidates will have completed at least 24 credit hours at UMSL. Candidates will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors. Candidates will have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Elizabeth M. Clayton joined the Department of Economics in 1968 after receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Washington (Seattle). She was professor of economics from 1968 until she retired in 1992. She also served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at UMSL. Elizabeth Clayton won the “triple crown” in economics as the first female professor hired, first female promoted and granted tenure, and first female to serve as department chair. She inspired many students and was a valued colleague in the department. In 1997, she received the University’s Women Trailblazers Award. She was a specialist in Soviet economics, especially of the agricultural sector. During her career, she was a fellow at Harvard University Law School, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and Moscow State University. She passed away in June 1999 after a battle with cancer. Scholarship Criteria Candidates will be students enrolled at UMSL who are pursuing a degree in Economics. Undergraduate candidates will have completed at least 75 credit hours towards their degree and at least 18 credit hours of coursework in Economics. This scholarship was established in honor of the donor’s mother, Emma Emilie Halbach Schlemper. Emma Schlemper was born July 6, 1891 in west St. Louis County in the little community of farmers called Hollow. After finishing the 8th grade, she moved to Gray Summit and worked in the home of a Mr. Borberg, the Superintendent of Schools. While there she prepared for the two-day school teacher certification tests. She traveled to Union, Missouri to take the test and completed it in one day. She taught for three years at Port Royal and at the Tavern Creek School near St. Albans. While teaching at Port Royal she earned $35.00 per month. While teaching at St. Albans she earned $45.00 per month and was charged $10.00 per month for room and board. She taught grades one through eight and had to clean both schools as well. She and her husband, Charlie Schlemper, were married in 1912. They raised their family and farmed 80 acres in St. Louis County. Emma died on February 18, 2001 at the age of 109 years, seven months, and twelve days. Scholarship Criteria Recipients will be incoming freshmen in an undergraduate teacher education program. Dr. George Erwin Roulhac, Jr., a retired neurosurgeon, died on June 24, 1994 at the age of 78. Dr. Roulhac practiced medicine in St. Louis for 40 years as a partner in Neurosurgical Associates. He was a former staff member at Barnes Hospital and was on the faculty at Washington University and the University of Missouri medical schools. He was a native of Florence, Georgia. After graduating from Vanderbilt University Medical School, he came to St. Louis in 1941 as an assistant resident in surgery at Barnes Hospital. Shortly after, he was appointed to the staff at the Washington University School of Medicine. Later, as a clinical associate professor at the University of Missouri, he helped set up a CAT-scan machine at St. Luke’s Hospital, the first at a private hospital in St. Louis. Dr. Roulhac was a founding member and past president of the Neurological Society of America and the Southern Neurosurgical Society. He was a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Cushing Society and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He served in World War II in the 101st General Hospital Unit in France, North Africa and Italy. He twice volunteered for duty on the S.S. Hope, a floating medical center that provided care and training in Nicaragua and Tunisia during his tours. An avid sportsman and golfer, he was a member of the St. Louis Country Club. Dudley R. Roy W. Bergmann was a founding member of the University of Missouri – St. Louis in 1963. Known as the “Committee of 28,” this visionary group saw the grounds of the former Bellerive Country Club as a potential opportunity for an institution of higher learning. A practicing attorney, Roy had an interest in writing. Though never published, his essays and poems are included in the Roy W. Bergmann Papers, 1932-1996. These are archived in the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. His late wife, Hilda, had a passion for water color painting, especially for natural subjects. John F. Sander met Susan, his wife of 37 years, while attending undergraduate classes at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. Both majored in political science. John went on to law school and became a practicing attorney, and Susan focused her political science concentration with a secondary education degree. John was a devoted family man and took pride in his wonderful marriage, children, and grandchildren. A surprising and unexpected cancer diagnosis led to his untimely death. Jung, Ed.D. Ling Li was an international student from Mainland China. She was preparing for her doctoral dissertation in Education and planning to graduate in 2005 from the University of Missouri – St. Louis when she died in an automobile accident at the age of 31. Ling Li was interested in educational technology to support student learning and in cross cultural research in teacher preparation. She was the president of the Chinese Student Association-Mainland at UM-St. Louis where she dedicated herself to this organization and others. Ling Li was an open, passionate, and warm-hearted young woman and an outstanding young student who will be missed by many. Ling was awarded the Ph.D. in Education posthumously at a ceremony attended by members of her family. Scholarship Criteria Recipients of this scholarship will be graduate students in the College of Education. Preference will be given to doctoral students. Dr. Allen was the first, and for many years the only, African-American faculty member at UM-St. Louis. Recruited as one of the young academics to build this new campus, he came to the university as head of the French section of the Department of Modem Languages and Literatures and later was chairman for eight years. Dr. Allen taught French at the university for twenty years until his retirement in 1986. As part of a post-doctoral Fulbright award, he spent several summers in France doing research as part of an international project on the works of Voltaire. Dr. Allen was awarded the Palmes Academiques in 1972, the highest award bestowed by France for services to the cause of Franco-American relations and for his scholarly research on Voltaire. In 1976, he received the AMOCO Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award. Additional information on Dr. Allen’s distinguished career is available in campus archives. This scholarship was inspired by the life work of Marie C. (Morheuser) Casey, who taught kindergarten, first and second grades for 19 years (1969-1988) in the City of St. Louis Public Schools, beginning when her youngest child was three years old. A native of North St. Louis, she graduated in 1939 from Blessed Sacrament Parish School, in 1943 from Incarnate Word Academy, and in 1947 from Webster College with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a minor in physical education. In 1947 she joined the robust St. Louis City Parks recreation program and worked for more than three years on summer playgrounds and in winter community center programs, leading recreational and art programs for patrons. She volunteered to work at Mullanphy Park (10th and Cass in downtown SL Louis) when it became one of first three integrated parks in St. Louis in summer 1950. She married Paul E. Casey in December 1950 and their seven daughters and one son were born in 1952 (Meg), 1953 (Marilyn), 1955 (Paul), 1956 (Marie), 1958 (Martha), 1959 (Mary), 1961 (Monica) and 1966 (Michelle). She instilled within her children a love of learning through daily reading aloud, summer school in the basement (with topics ranging from geography and mythology to art, music, and exercise), and every-other-week trips to the St. Louis County Library on Natural Bridge, which served their home community of Northwoods. In 1969 she enrolled in Career II, a federally-funded program implemented in St. Louis by St. Louis Public Schools Superintendent William A. Kottmeyer and Audrey E. Claus, who together co-authored the popular “Basic Goals in Spelling." Through the Career II program, Marie (Morheuser) Casey earned her certificate in teaching, practice taught at Clay Elementary in North St. Louis, and then devoted herself to mastering every available reading curriculum to ensure the reading and overall learning success of her young students at Mark Twain Elementary and Mark Twain Branch. It is the hope of Marie A. Casey, her daughter, and her husband, Kenn Entringer, that this scholarship will contribute to the development of future teachers who are committed to the full development of children; especially those born into economic poverty. Those who carry on this commitment will share Marie (Morheuser) Casey’s wholehearted believe in the enormous potential within each child, her dedication to social justice, her inordinate sense of fairness and high ethics, and her believe that every day counts in the life of a child. Nancy S. Abel always wished that she had gone to college. When she was a young girl in the 1940s, the opportunities for someone like her living in a small town were very few. An endowed scholarship program was established at the University of Missouri System (UM) from the estate of Nora B. Ames. This scholarship program provides awards that are funded from the Nora Farley Ames and David D. Farley Education Fund, that is held by the University to serve high school graduates from Public high schools located in Buchanan, Cass, Clay, DeKalb, Jackson, Johnson or Platte counties in the State of Missouri. Reservation Counter looks to give scholarship awards to deserving students to achieve higher quality education, and are actively promoting education to encourage students to improve their knowledge and strive for excellence.

Dick. the first of six children, was born on November 28, 1938, in Kansas City, Missouri. At the age or six his father was drafted into the armed forces, so he and his family relocated to his mother’s family homestead established in Henry County in rural western Missouri. His life was nurtured within a farming community that valued faith, family, personal responsibility and charity. His formal early education took place in a one-room school house prior to entry into high school at the age of twelve. Gifted with many natural abilities, a drive to acquire knowledge—he completed a correspondence course in electronics at age fourteen—and an aptitude for how things work, one of his first jobs off the farm was in radio and television repair. Soon he moved to Illinois in order to pursue a career in the rapidly expanding telecommunications industry. Throughout life he embraced each new opportunity with skill, high expectations and determination. Those characteristics were, without a doubt, instrumental for his academic achievements as a “non-traditional” college student – married with two boys ages nine and seven. Among Dick’s most notable endeavors was his success as an adult learner with a family in the midst of life’s everyday challenges. Lacking the resources to purse higher education in the late 1960s, Dick competed for and was awarded a scholarship from the IBEW and tuition aid from his employer Illinois Bell Telephone Company (now AT&T). That launched him on the path to a remarkable college experience. He completed the rigorous engineering curriculum at Bradley University located in Peoria, Illinois over the course of just four years plus one summer, was awarded high honors at commencement and recognized by his peers as the 1972 Outstanding Senior Engineering Student. Through it all he was also recognized for having perfect attendance at work. As the breadwinner with a stay at home spouse, day after day he worked full-time from 4:00 p.m. to midnight, slept a few hours, attended classes, studied, and even found time to hang out with his two sons. In addition, having an uncompromising sense of duty to provide for his family and lacking an appreciation for idleness, during a prolonged contentious strike at Illinois Bell he earned minimum wage while cleaning a local park. Clearly, his actions and attitude authenticated a familiar phrase that he repeated often, “I do not have to go to work, I get to go to work.” Dick was licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in 1989. Following a thirty-four year career at Illinois Bell Telephone Co., he worked several years at Communications Engineers in Springfield, Illinois. He maintained a commitment to self-reliance throughout his life which led him to perform most household improvements and automobile repairs. His passion to create inspired numerous woodworking and electronic projects and the assembly of two experimental aircraft, one which he completed and enjoyed piloting many hours prior to his death on June 19, 2006, at the age of 67. Scholarship Criteria Recipients will be Missouri residents as well as US citizens or permanent residents. Recipients must be undergraduate students pursuing a degree in the Joint Engineering Program. Recipients must demonstrate high financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Recipients must have completed 60 or more credit hours toward an engineering degree and be in good academic standing. Preference will be given to non-traditional students with one or more dependent children.

Stan and Terry Freerks feel that UMSL is a quality and vital institution: their desire is to provide opportunities for others to enjoy what UMSL has to offer. Terry believes that education is foundational to a productive and enjoyable life, and she and Stan both believe that athletic involvement complements those pursuits. Terry received her BA in History and her MA in Education from UM-St. Louis. It was in the UMSL environment that she realized her love of academics and her desire to continue her studies. Terry received her PhD. in Counseling from St. Louis University. Terry attributes the academic preparation and professorial guidance from the UMSL faculty for her decision to seek her Doctorate. While at UMSL, Terry profited from the tutelage and mentoring of then History Professor Blanche Touhill, who became Chancellor of UMSL, where Terry experienced Dr. Touhill dedicating herself to the development and well-being of the UMSL students and university. Terry wanted to follow that example by giving back to the school that was so vital to her success as a professional and as a person. Terry has her own private practice in counseling and is the Executive Director of the Clayton Shaw Park Swim Team. Stan received his MBA from UMSL after having completed his undergraduate degree in History from Cornell University. Stan founded his own wholesale insurance brokerage firm in St. Louis in 1979 and continues the practice today. Stan feels that his business studies at UMSL prepared him for the demands of his position as CEO and CFO of his business and contributed to his ability to successfully grow his business. Scholarship Criteria Candidates will be pursuing a degree in History at the undergraduate or graduate level. If the recipient is an incoming freshman, she or he must have earned a cumulative high school GPA of 3.2 or higher. If the recipient is already an undergraduate or graduate student, she or he must have earned a cumulative UMSL GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients must enroll full-time at UMSL each semester (12 hours per semester for undergraduate students and 9 hours per semester for graduate students). Preference will be given to student’s involved in athletics or with demonstrated involvement in the community.

Scholarship Criteria Recipients will be accounting students who will be starting their senior year of the BSAcc or the first year of the MSAcc programs in the fall. Recipients will have earned a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The Kenneth P. Carp college scholarship is open to individuals who are planning to attend or currently enrolled in an accredited United States college or university.

The $1000 scholarship aims to help students reach their education and career goals by assisting with the cost of tuition and books. We gladly welcome any student currently enrolled in school with a GPA of 3.0. To apply; the student must write an essay of the benefits of alternative medicine compared to pharmaceutical drugs. The Hispanic Educational, Cultural and Scholarship Fund is pleased to award scholarships of $1,000 to Latino students in college or college-bound every year. These scholarships are recognition of a student’s overall achievements, and are available to Hispanic/Latino students that are permanent residents in the Greater St. Louis area (includes Missouri and Illinois) enrolled in post-secondary course work or trade school every fall. For the purpose of this scholarship and to qualify, at least one of the applicant’s grandparents must be or have been Hispanic/Latino. The Dr. Donald Suggs Scholarship is designed to enhance recruitment and retention of academically talented undergraduate students that are typically under-represented in higher education. This scholarship is named to honor Dr. Donald M. Suggs, oral surgeon, newspaper publisher, patron of the arts and distinguished community leader. His contributions to the City of St. Louis and the State of Missouri are recognized and honored by the University of Missouri – Saint Louis (UMSL) with a scholarship that covers all resident undergraduate tuition and fees at UMSL. Varsity Tutors holds a monthly $1,000 college scholarship contest where students must write an essay in response to a monthly prompt. Visitors to the Varsity Tutors scholarship webpage are able to vote via social media for submitted entries. The top five entries with the most votes are reviewed by Varsity Tutors at the end of the month and one winner is subsequently chosen to receive the $1,000 college scholarship.
