Scholarships at Gaston College

The SPARC SSTEM Scholarship is designed for students who plan on majoring in a STEM Field (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Math, Computer Science, etc…). This scholarship is open to all Associate of Science and Associate of Engineering students, who qualify for federal financial aid and who have a 3.0 GPA (unweighted). While at Gaston College, students can receive up to $6,000 per year for two years. STEM majors receiving this scholarship may also be eligible for an award of up to $7500/year after transfer to a 4-year college or university.

This scholarship was established in 1996 as a memorial to Mr. David Belk Cannon’s son, David Belk Cannon, Jr. and his daughter, Rebecca Cannon, both of whom died in a tragic fire. The recipients are selected based on merit and must maintain a 2.0 GPA. Gaston College graduates who received the David Belk Cannon Family Scholarship are eligible to apply for a one-time $2,000 award for continuing study at a four-year college or university.

First Gaston Foundation established this scholarship in 2002 as a memorial to Mr. Brunnemer who served on its board for 16 years and was chairman of its scholarship committee. The scholarship is awarded to students who have been accepted into the associate degree nursing program. Selection will be based on a combination of academic achievement, need, community involvement and volunteer work.

The Billy Lytton, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Mr. Billy Lytton, Jr. Mr. Lytton joined the Gaston County Police Department in 1974, working in each department before obtaining the position of Assistant Chief; he retired in August of 2000. He joined the Gaston College Police Department in 2001 and served in the role of Chief until his death. The Scholarship is to be awarded to a promising student pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice.

This scholarship was established as a memorial to Bonnie Hoyle, an instructor in the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program, who was killed in a traffic accident. This scholarship is open to a second-year student in the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program. If no applicants in this program apply, the award can only be given to a Civil or Industrial Engineering Technology applicant. The recipient is selected based on academic achievement, community involvement and must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Family and friends of Britt DeAnna Cordero established this fund in her memory following her tragic death in a motorcycle accident on March 19, 2004. Britt graduated from East Gaston High School in 2000 and received an Associate of Science degree from Gaston College in 2003 where she was on the Dean’s List. Recipients may be enrolled in any course of study at Gaston College. The award is based on community involvement and academic achievements and is to be given to a graduate of East Gaston High School who does not qualify for a Federal Pell grant but needs financial assistance.

The fund was established under the will of C. Grier Beam, founder and owner of Carolina Freight Carrier Corp. in Cherryville. Mr. Beam served as a long-time member of the Gaston College Board of Trustees. His wife, Lena Sue Beam, was a charter member of the Gaston College Foundation’s Heritage Society. The scholarship is to qualified students in need of financial aid as the official of such institutions deem best in their discretion

CARE|Charlotte Animal Referral & Emergency is the Charlotte region’s advanced medical center for pets. CARE is a state-of-the-art veterinary facility that offers 24/7 emergency care and board-certified specialty care, including oncology, neurology, surgery, ophthalmology, internal medicine, and cardiology. Privately owned and operated, CARE prides itself on its staff, each team member’s passion for veterinary excellence, and their compassion for the well-being of its patients. Awarded to 2nd year student with a minimum GPA 3.0. Preference given to underrepresented populations in the veterinary industry.

Christopher Lee Coxton was accidentally killed while practicing with his revolver while serving as a Deputy for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. A memorial trust was established in Chris’s memory by Benny G. Coxton, Judith W. Abernethy, Barbara Pickens and other family and friends and transferred to the Gaston College Foundation for the establishment of an endowed scholarship fund in Chris’ memory. The award is given to residents in Lincoln County enrolled in the Criminal Justice Program or in the Basic Law Enforcement Training program. If no BLET students qualify for the scholarship in any given semester, a Gaston College BLET graduate from Lincoln County currently pursuing a Degree in Criminal Justice at Gaston College may be considered. Students may only be awarded this scholarship once.

The scholarship is established by the Dallas Optimist Club as part of its outreach to the community. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may only be awarded to recent graduates who have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 2.5. Financial need is not a requirement for this scholarship. Recipients must reside in Dallas, N.C. Scholarships are not renewable for a second year.

The Dallas High School Men’s Group consists of any man who attended or graduated from the Old Dallas High School up to 1972. The Veterans’ Scholarship in memory of classmates killed in action in Vietnam is awarded to graduates from North Gaston High School. Preference given to HS Seniors, however current College students who graduated from North Gaston may be considered. Financial need is not a requirement but is considered. Applications are distributed by North Gaston High School. Recipients must have 2.5 High School GPA and must maintain a 2.5 College GPA to remain eligible and must be enrolled full time. Existing scholarships awards may be renewed provided that the recipient maintains a 2.5 GPA.

This scholarship is in memory of Dennis Lee Doty. In Dennis’early years he enjoyed coaching Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and all outdoor activities, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Dennis retired from Tyson foods after 38 years of service and spent several years in various positions for the city of Elm Springs, Arkansas. He was a member of Fellowship Bible Church in Rogers, Arkansas. Scholarship distributed from this fund may only be awarded to a 2nd-year walk-on Baseball Athlete, who has achieved a minimum Gaston College GPA of 2.5. Student-athletes will be selected from a committee from baseball and must demonstrate improvement in athletics and academics. Financial need is not a requirement for this scholarship. Not Renewable

Don Walser, former chair of the Gaston College Board of Trustees established this scholarship. It is open to second-year students majoring in Accounting, Business Administration, and Administrative Office Technology or Business Computer Programming with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference is given to Accounting students. The recipient will be selected based on academic achievement, need and community involvement. Donor requests endorsement letters by two faculty members from student’s discipline and statement of career aspirations.

This scholarship was established by friends, family, and colleagues in memory of Donna English. Donna was part of the College family for over 26 years and positively impacted countless lives in her dedication to helping, teaching, and mentoring others. She was instrumental in the planning and development of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and specifically the drafting and other labs. She was also an active supporter of the Apprenticeship 321 program and was always known for going out of her way to serve and help our students. In 2016, she was selected as the Instructor of the Year. Awards will be made to students studying in an Advanced Manufacturing field (Industrial Technology, Engineering Technology, etc.) with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Dr. Tyner, a retired surgeon in Gaston County, established this fund to provide a scholarship each year to a student in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program.

This fund was established in memorial of Dr. Teresa Worthy who served as a Business Administration instructor at Gaston College. Awards are to made to promising students in the business administration program.

This scholarship honors the memory of Duane Crane who was chair of the science department at Gaston College when he died in 2003. His family, friends and co-workers established the award which goes to a Science student and is based on academic achievement.

This scholarship was initiated by the First Gaston Foundation to assist four deserving students who are residents of Gaston County seeking a degree in the Liberal Arts Division. The recipients are selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need.

This scholarship was established by Mrs. Louise K. Ratchford and children in memory of her husband, Fred A. Ratchford, Sr. This scholarship is open to Gaston County residents or natives. The recipient is selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and may be enrolled in any course of study at Gaston College. Donor requests a report of the student’s progress be sent at the conclusion of the semester.

The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association provides this award to a second-year student in the Veterinary Technology Program. It is based on academic achievement and financial need and the recipient must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Mr. and Mrs. Gary D. Stewart, grandparents of Gary Daniel Stewart, established this annual scholarship in memory of Gary to assist those with an interest in pursuing a certificate, diploma or degree within an Automotive Systems Technology program. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may only be awarded to either recent high school graduates who have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 2.5 or a current student at Gaston College who has attained a minimum GPA of 2.5 in at least ¼ of their required program. Financial need is not a requirement for this scholarship. Preference should be given to students residing in Gaston County. The scholarship may be renewed for one additional year provided that the recipient maintains a minimum GPA of 2.5.

This scholarship was created to support students interested in pursuing a career in teaching. Students must be enrolled in the A.A. or A.S. program in Teacher Preparation.

This scholarship is to be awarded to students enrolled in the Associate in Applied Science in Textile Technology, Textile Technology programs, including Textile Technology: Management; Textile Technology: Design; Textile Technology: Technician.

Established in 1968 by Gastonia East Rotary Club to benefit Gaston College students, this scholarship is open to Gaston County residents. The recipients are selected based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need. Annual disbursements vary. Renewable for 2nd year

Mr. Charles King Bryant, Sr.’s Born in Iredell County in 1894, he attended Iredell County schools, graduated in 1913 and then attended New York Electrical School from 1914-1916. He was a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, a National Industrial Service Association. He also served as a Representative within the General Assembly during the 1951 and 1954 sessions. His son Harry M. Bryant and his wife, Ruby B. Bryant, made commitments in Mr. Charles King Bryant Sr.’s memory to fund a scholarship at Gaston College for students pursuing a degree most aligned with the electrical industry. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may be awarded to students residing in Gaston, Lincoln, Cleveland or Catawba County North Carolina or York or Cherokee County South Carolina pursuing a diploma, certificate or associate degree program in Office Administration or Business Administration, or who is pursuing a diploma or associate degree program in Electrical Systems Technology, Mechatronics Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering Technology. Recipient(s) must have been enrolled in Gaston College for a minimum of 24 credit hours if a full-time student, or 12 hours if a part-time student, and have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students are eligible to receive this scholarship for up to 2 years (6 full semesters including Fall, Spring and Summer) provided that a minimum GPA of 2.5 is maintained.

Mrs. Gilda R. Beam established this scholarship in memory of her husband, Mr. Hershal Hoyle Beam, a Gaston County educator, and her daughter, Anne Beam Morgan. This scholarship is open to any degree-seeking student enrolled full-time with a minimum GPA of 2.5. The recipient is selected based on financial need.

This scholarship was established in 1968 in honor of Mr. Hunter Huss for years of service as an educator. This scholarship is open to Gaston County high school graduates in any course of study. The selection is based on academic progress.

This Scholarship was established in memory of Linda Isenhour, a Gaston College Alumni and Trauma ICA Nurse, by her family and friends. Preference is given to a nursing student that demonstrates a strong passion for working in crucial care/ICU units.

Established by Mr. and Mrs. Goodyear in 2001 to commemorate their 33rd wedding anniversary, the scholarship assists students pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Medical Technology and who have financial need. Preference should be given to applicants who have worked or volunteer in the community.

Mrs. Carol Robinson established this scholarship in honor of her husband, Jack Robinson, a retired pilot, in honor of his 75th birthday. This scholarship is open to all students with preference being given to those with interest in aviation. The recipients are selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need.

The scholarship was established to provide financial assistance for needy students with preference given to current employees of Sunshine Uniform Services or their immediate families. Recipients may be either full, or part-time students, and may be enrolled in any course of study at Gaston College. Selection will be based on need. The First Gaston Foundation, Inc. established this award in memory of Mr. James H. Martin, Jr., a past Trustee of the Foundation. Selection is based on academic achievement and is awarded to a student in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program or the LPN to RN Program.

This scholarship was established as a fitting memorial to Jeanne Rauch for her many contributions to the development and appreciation of art in North Carolina. It aids a Gaston College student in the Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) program. Preference is given to residents of Gaston and Lincoln counties, with selection based on a combination of academic achievement and need and is renewable for a second year.

This scholarship was established in Kent Spitler’s loving memory by his colleagues, friends, and family to honor his dedicated years of service and commitment as Director of EMS Education at Gaston College for 19 years. The scholarship will be awarded to a Paramedic Medicine student that demonstrates the enthusiasm and compassion to pursue a rigorous career in paramedic medicine.

This scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Fred K. Houser and Creola Houser who owned the Cherryville Eagle for many years. Preference is given to graduates of Cherryville High School and then to Gaston County at large. The recipients are selected based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need and they may be enrolled in any course of study at Gaston College. The funds are to be used for books, tuition, fees, and other special expenses in certain programs such as nursing and science. The donor wishes recipients of this scholarship be recognized at their high school honors program in the spring.

Least of These of Carolinas, established in 2013, is a 501-C-3 organization with the mission “to identify and service the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of children and their caregivers, with the primary focus on children in foster/kinship care. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may be awarded to documented foster children or adopted children, regardless of location, who graduated high school with a minimum GPA of 2.5. If no foster or adopted youth are eligible in a given year, students pursuing an Associate Degree in Human Services Technology will be given consideration. Additionally, Gaston College students who are pursuing a Human Services AAS and are interning with Least of these Carolinas will be given priority consideration. The scholarship is renewable for a 2nd year, but recipients may not receive the award for more than two years. Applications must provide a written statement regarding their future career aspirations as well as the impact this scholarship could have upon their future endeavors.

Linda I. Rader taught at Grier Elementary From 1958 – 1964 and at Gardner Park Elementary from 1964 – 1987. From 1988 until her death in 2003, she was the staff development director for Gaston County Schools. Mrs. Rader believed in the concept of social justice whether it be the amount of money per classroom student or equal representation for all regardless of gender, ethnicity, race or social status. Linda was a tireless worker on behalf of all people who worked in education, whatever position, at the local, state, and national levels. Mrs. Rader’s last will and testament bequeathed a scholarship fund to Gaston College so that others may be given the gift of an education. This general scholarship is open to students in any program of study with preference given to Early Childhood Education or Teacher preparation program.

The Lubrizol Foundation Scholarship awards six second-year students seeking a Diploma in Biotechnology or Engineering Technology. Selection is made based on academic achievement and financial need of exceptional students and can only be applied to tuition.

The purpose of this annual scholarship award shall be to provide financial assistance for a promising veterinary technician student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources to attend college. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may be awarded recent high school graduates who have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 2.75, or current Gaston College students with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Financial need is not a requirement for this scholarship, but is considered. Renewable for a 2nd year.

Dr. Harry Cooke, Director of Gaston College Libraries, established this award to honor his wife, Marischa, in appreciation for her life-long interest and involvement in the welfare of animals. The award is based on academic achievement and goes to a second year student in the Veterinary Technology Program. Residents of Catawba County, NC are given preference.

Mr. Leonard Aleman established this scholarship in memory of his wife, Mary Lee Aleman. The scholarship is awarded to residents of Gaston County, NC who have been accepted into the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program. Two awards will be made each year based on academic achievement and financial need and are renewable for the second year for recipients earning at least a 3.0 grade point average.

This scholarship was established in 1965 under the will of Howard Max Crowder. It is open to Cherryville High School Seniors who will be attending Gaston College. The recipient is selected based on personality, academic achievement, and need with no emphasis on any one factor.

This scholarship was established in memory of Mother Bernice Ballard Wilson as a tribute to her commitment to her children, both biological and “adopted”, and to her dedicated and faithful church work. The scholarship is open to students in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program, with the recipient selected based primarily on need with preference given to minority students.

This endowed scholarship fund was established by The North Carolina Association of Textile Services and is initiated by Sunshine Uniform Service, Inc., a member of the organization. This scholarship is open to all students but preference will be given to children, grandchildren and relatives of employees of Sunshine Uniform Service and is based on academic achievement and community involvement. The recipient may be in any course of study at Gaston College. The donor requests the foundation contact them annually to provide information or the recipient and the amount of the award.

The North Carolina Association of Veterinary Technicians is a membership organization based in Cary, NC whose mission it is to advance the profession by providing continuing education and networking opportunities for those in the field of veterinary medicine. The award is given to a second-year student in the Veterinary Technology program. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may be awarded recent high school graduates who have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 2.75, or current Gaston College students with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Financial need is not a requirement for this scholarship, but is considered. Recipients must be in good standing of the NCAVT.

Ken Harbin established this scholarship in memory of his wife, Oneda Sellers Harbin, who was killed in a traffic accident in 1995. The scholarship is awarded to a senior at North Gaston High School where Mrs. Harbin graduated. The recipient is selected by high school staff and is based on need, academic achievement, career interest, and community involvement. Mrs. Patricia L. Farmer established this scholarship in loving memory of her husband of 36 years, Mr. Barry D. Farmer who passed away at the age of 55 in 2004. Patricia and Barry both walked the halls of Gaston College as students in the late 1960’s pursuing degrees in Nursing and Civil Engineering. The purpose of this annual scholarship award shall be to provide financial assistance for two deserving students, one an incoming Gaston College freshman, and one a rising Gaston College sophomore, pursuing an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technologies. In the event that no students qualify, secondary consideration will be given to students pursuing an Associate Degree in any program within the division of Engineering and Industrial Technologies.

Kristi Kiser wishes to honor her father, Mr. Randy Kiser, a 1979 graduate of the Gaston College Electrical Installation & Maintenance program as well as a 2012 recipient of a diploma in Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology, through this annual scholarship gift. The purpose of this annual scholarship award shall be to provide financial assistance for a deserving Gaston College student enrolled in his/her second semester or beyond and pursuing a course of study within one of two programs including a Diploma in Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology or Electrical Systems Technology. All applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be considered.

Established in 1987 in memory of Ray P. Craig, a former vice president of Gaston County Dyeing and first chairman of the Gaston College Board of Trustees, this scholarship is open to all students but preference is given to Gaston County Dyeing employees and their families. The recipient will be selected based on need and academic achievement.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Huss along with friends and family members established this scholarship in 1989. Mr. Huss spent his career as an educator in Gaston County Schools. The recipients are selected based on demonstration of financial need and must be a resident of Gaston County. Preference is given to students with an interest in teaching.

This scholarship is in honor of Sheriff Alan Cloninger who was born and raised in Dallas NC. Alan attended UNCC and is also a graduate of Campbell University, Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. After finishing law school he worked at Frank Patton Cook Law firm as an Associate Attorney. Moving to Assistant District Attorney, Alan served in that role for 2 years. After practicing law at his own firm for 9 years, he became a Jail Administrator. His latest endeavor has been serving as Sheriff for Gaston County for the past 17 years. The purpose shall be to provide assistance to a student seeking Basic Law Enforcement Training. The award is based on a combination of academic achievement. Recipients may not renew for a second year. Graduates must maintain a 2.5 GPA and must be a recent graduate of Gaston or Lincoln County Schools.

Endowed This scholarship is open to all students enrolled in any course of study at Gaston College. The recipient is selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need.

The SECU Foundation established this two-year “People Helping People” scholarship program, providing two scholarships to each North Carolina Community College. Preference will be given to students whose parents or guardians and family members are public sector employees who live and work in NC. Recipients must be NC residents and US citizens, eligible for in-state tuition, and have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. Applicant must be a full-time student who is a high school graduate or has completed the General Education Development (GED) program, and enrolled in an associate degree, diploma or certificate program. Scholarship recipients in good academic standing may receive the scholarship up to a maximum of four consecutive semesters, but must be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours. Preference will be given to students with limited financial aid from other programs. Applicant must demonstrate scholastic achievement and maintain a 2.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale or attained a score of 3,000 on the GED test. The scholarship will be used to pay tuition, books, fees, course supplies and transportation. Recipient must agree to continue at the community college where enrolled at the time of the scholarship award for the duration of the scholarship, for four consecutive fall/spring semesters or upon completion of a diploma program. Recipient cannot be a director, employee or family member of an employee of the State Employees’ Credit Union or SECU Foundation.

Carl J. Stewart, Jr. initiated the Stewart Family Scholarship in honor of his daughters, Lisa Stewart and Julie Stewart Bradley, both of whom graduated from the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program at Gaston College. The award is open to students who have been accepted into the ADN Program with selection based on financial need.

The Synthetic Yarn and Fabric Association (SYFA) is a non-profit organization comprised of individuals affiliated with the synthetic yarn and fiber industry. Representation in the industry includes fiber producers, texturizers, staple yarn manufacturers, fabric producers for apparel, automotive, upholstery, and industrial markets. Additionally, raw material suppliers, equipment manufacturers, and service providers related to the industry are valuable contributors to the organization. YFA was founded in 1972 as the Textured Yarn Association of America to address the needs of a rapidly growing textured yarn industry. In 2007 its name changed to the Synthetic Yarn and Fiber Association (SYFA) to reflect its focus on synthetic fiber through the final fabric supply chain and in 2016, changing its name again to incorporate final fabric to finished, branded products and became the Synthetic Yarn and Fabric Association. Scholarship distributed from this fund may be awarded to Textile Technology Students with a preference to recent graduates who have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 2.5. This scholarship was established by the Gaston County Organization for Community Concerns in memory of T. Jeffers, an educator in Gaston County and the mayor of Gastonia. Teri Fridley never considered art as a career. Instead, she used her creative abilities as an elementary school teacher. After she returned to Gaston County to assist with her family’s business she enrolled in art classes at Gaston College. Here, with the assistance of wonderful instructors, she was able to express her artistic vision and finally felt empowered to claim the title “Artist.” By establishing The Teri Fridley Young Artist Scholarship, she hopes to provide a guiding hand to area students so that they may also feel empowered to claim that title and pursue careers in the visual arts. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may only be awarded to high school graduates from who have earned their high school diplomas within two years of the beginning of the next Gaston College academic year. Recipients must have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and must maintain a 3.0 college GPA to remain eligible for continued funding. Financial need is not a requirement to receive this scholarship but is considered. Applicants must submit a portfolio of their work, the specifics of which are outlined in an Addendum. Recipients must be enrolled in no less than 15 credit hours each Fall and Spring semester. If a student does not exhaust available full-time funding during the Fall or Spring semesters, the balance available may be applied toward Summer classes. Each recipient may not receive more than a total of $6,000 to complete their degree, distributed over no more than eight consecutive semesters. All scholarship candidates must submit a well-organized essay, addressing the following: 1. How you became interested in art? 2. Why do you want to pursue a degree in the arts? 3. What would this scholarship mean to you? All scholarship candidates must submit a Portfolio of 10 artworks representative of their art, in PDF format. Portfolio should be of the visual arts and may include drawing, painting, photography, 3-dimensional sculpture, ceramics, digital media, mixed media, and/or printmaking. The portfolio should exhibit the student’s artistic potential, creativity and talent. Each image should be high quality (min. 1500 pixels long edge) and accurately represent the original artwork. Each image must be labeled with artist’s name, title of the piece, media, dimensions, and year completed. A description of the concept behind the piece and any other relevant context for each item may be included. Alison Nichols, a 1992 graduate of GC’s mechanical drafting program, established this award in memory of her instructor, Andy Hawkins. The scholarship is intended to assist students in any Engineering & Industrial Technologies program. The Athena Award was originally presented annually by Citizens South Bank, now known as South State Bank, in collaboration with the Gaston Regional Chamber now known as the Gaston Business Association to a community leader in recognition of their business or professional accomplishments in community service. The Athena Award especially recognizes those who have been a role model to encourage women to achieve their full potential. The Athena Award recipients established this scholarship for a promising Gaston College GED or Adult High School graduate who wants to continue their education at Gaston College. The award is based primarily on academic achievement and is renewable for a second year.

This Fund was established by Mr. Loyd W. Rose Jr. in memory of Barbara Rose, his loving wife of 71 years. Barbara grew up in Dallas, N.C. and dreamed of becoming a nurse. But, after high school graduation, she was needed in the family business. However, she had two younger sisters and she encouraged both to pursue nursing school. Both sisters graduated from hospital nursing programs and enjoyed long careers in the nursing field. Scholarships are awarded to a student in the Nursing program with preference given to LPN-RN program. Students must live in North or South Carolina and have experience working in a hospital, nursing home, home healthcare or hospice setting and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Scholarship is renewable for a second year.

This fund was established in January 2020 by Mr. Plato Pearson, Jr. in memory of Bet Pearson, his loving wife of 71 years and mother of their four children. Bet lived a life of service to her family and community and was involved in numerous religious and civic organizations in Gastonia. The fund was created with the intent to assist those currently working in healthcare and interested in advancing their careers in nursing. Students must have experience working in a hospital, nursing home, home healthcare or hospice setting and are not eligible for financial aid. Must have a2.5 GPA or higher.

Ms. Betty Davis Jones, RN, MA, CMA (AAMA) served Gaston College faithfully beginning in September of 1978. During her tenure, she established the veterinary medical technology, phlebotomy and medical assisting programs and served as an instructor until she ultimately retired as chairperson for the medical assisting program in June 2017. Ms. Jones inspired countless students to become knowledgeable and indispensable members of medical teams throughout our region. As the author of a highly touted textbook about medical terminology, Ms. Jones also shared her passion for the field she dedicated her life’s work to with students she will likely never meet but whose lives she has enriched. Upon her retirement from Gaston College, the faculty she worked with and mentored established this scholarship in her honor so that her passion for the field of medical assisting may be championed by future practitioners. Scholarships may be awarded to a student pursuing an associate of applied science degree or diploma in medical assisting. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or better and be a full time student. Financial need is not a requirement but is considered. Scholarship is not renewable for a second year.

This endowed fund was established by Mrs. Maureen Tull in memory of her husband Robert “Bob” Tull. Mr. Tull joined the Gaston College Foundation Board of Directors in 2001 and served two terms as chairman. His last project before his death was the completion of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing on the Dallas Campus of Gaston College. Scholarships from the fund may be awarded to an Associate in Engineering or Associate of Applied Science in a manufacturing related field that has a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students must indicate a strong desire to continue their education at a four-year college/university and to work in the manufacturing industry

Sallie Nixon established this award in memory of her husband, Caldwell Nixon, who was a World War II veteran, an area director of the Veterans Administration in Nebraska and West Virginia, and a member of the board of directors of 14 service-related organizations. He was influential in the renovation of the old Lincolnton High School into a home for Gaston College and the Senior Center, where a room bears his name. The award is open to students residing in Lincoln County and is based on academic achievement. Recipients may be enrolled in any course of study at Gaston College.

The scholarship fund has been established by Diane Crosby Self and Taylor Self Potter in memory of Corporal Katelyn Self. Cpl. Self was raised in Dallas and was a graduate of North Gaston High School and attended Gaston College. She was a Deputy with the Gaston County Sheriff’s Office for four years before being tragically killed on May 20, 2018. To honor her memory as a loving and devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to all, her family has established this scholarship to provide financial support for students pursuing a career in Law Enforcement. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may only be awarded to recent graduates who have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 3.0. or a College GPA of 2.5, for current students. Financial need is not a requirement for this scholarship but may be considered. Scholarship is not renewable for a second year.

This scholarship was established in 1996 as a memorial to Mr. David Belk Cannon’s son, David Belk Cannon, Jr. and his daughter, Rebecca Cannon, both of whom died in a tragic fire. The recipients are selected based on character, academic achievement, and need. Each must be a full-time student, maintain a 2.0 GPA, attend a luncheon event, and participate in the scholarship’s mentoring program to continue receiving scholarship funds. Recipients may be enrolled in any course of study at Gaston College. Scholarships are renewable for a second year.

This scholarship was established by the Association for the Education of Young Children and friends of Dr. Janet Johnston in honor of her service to the community. This scholarship is awarded to Early Childhood Education students. The recipient will be selected based primarily on need and should have completed one full year of the program in a satisfactory manner.

This Scholarship was established through the support of the Gaston College Community to honor the 25-year tenure of Dr. Patricia Skinner as President of Gaston College. The scholarship recipient is available to full time students in any major that are not eligible for Pell but have unmet financial need. Recipient must have a 2.5 GPA and must have completed 24 credit hours towards their program of study

The scholarship was established in 2000 by the Gaston County Home Health Agency to enhance area health care by assisting Gaston College students pursuing nursing degrees in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program or to a student in the LPN to RN Program at Gaston College. Selection is based on a combination of community involvement, academic achievement and need. Donor requests endorsement letters by two faculty members from student’s discipline and the student must have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Judith Robinson Maloney established this annual endowed scholarship award in honor of her husband as he celebrated his 75th birthday. He graduated from UNC with a degree in Chemistry and Duke University with a Doctor of Medicine and was also an accomplished pilot. Preference given to those desiring to be a physician in such programs as Biology, Chemistry, Nursing, or a student seeking a career in aviation. Recipients are selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need. Renewable for a second year.

Mary E. Stowe established this scholarship in honor of her mother, Evelyn Rankin Stowe, who was a Public Health Nurse in Gaston and Mecklenburg counties and spent her career promoting health and wellness programs. This scholarship is open to Gaston College students in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program. The recipient is selected based on a combination of career interest, academic achievement and community involvement.

This fund was established in memory of Mr. Fred Lee Hoffman, by his nephews Alan G. Cloninger and Thomas R. Cloninger, and his niece Paula C. Houser. Mr. Hoffman was an avid third-generation farmer who loved sharing the bounty of his harvest with many. Students pursing any course of study leading to an Associate Degree may be considered with preference given to those in Business and Information Technology programs or Engineering and Industrial Technology programs. Scholarships only awarded to Lincoln county residents. Preference is to be given to students who have graduated from West Lincoln High School within the last five years with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better. If there are no applicants from West Lincoln HS, applicants from Lincoln High School may also be considered. In order for current Gaston College students to be considered, they must meet the above criteria and have been enrolled in Gaston College for a minimum of 24 credit hours if a full-time student, or 12 hours if a part-time student, and have achieved a minimum GPA of 2.5.

The Gaston County Medical Society Alliance is a volunteer organization of Gaston County, founded in 1947. Its mission is to improve the health and health education for Gaston County residents as well as address the concerns of the medical profession. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students within the program of health and Human Services Division. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may be awarded to either recent high school graduates who have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 2.5 or a current student at Gaston College who has attained a minimum GPA of 2.5 in at least ¼ of their required program. Financial need is not a requirement for this scholarship but should be strongly considered. Preference given to students residing in Gaston County. The scholarship may be renewed for one additional year without the need for reapplication provided that the recipient maintains a minimum GPA of 2.5.

This scholarship fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Mo Ally. Mo Ally is a dynamic Marketing/Management Executive with over 45 years of outstanding accomplishments as an entrepreneur in sales, management, and marketing. Gaston Lifestyles Magazine is a bimonthly publication with a circulation of 5,000 copies per issue. The goal of the magazine is to uplift the community and showcase our vast cultural richness. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may only be awarded to recent graduates who have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 2.75 or college students with a minimum college GPA of 3.0. Applicants must be a resident of Gaston County. Applicants must be enrolled in a Business Administration curriculum program. Preference will be given to applicants that are enrolled in the Small Business program. Scholarships are not renewable for a second year.

Tracy Philbeck, a lifelong resident of Gaston County and County Commissioner since 2009, is a strong believer that education is the key to success. The purpose of this annual scholarship award is to provide financial assistance for a recent graduate of Warlick Academy, a public institution included within Gaston County Schools, who achieved a minimum high school GPA of 2.0 and has the desire to further their education as a student at Gaston College. Financial need is not a requirement for this scholarship.

Given by former Gaston College Board of Trustee Chairman, Mr. J. A. Dalpiaz (Dal), and his wife, Lorraine, this endowed fund provides scholarship assistance to participants of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Gastonia who graduate from high school. Up to two awards will be made each year to such students who pursue a degree, certificate, or diploma at Gaston College in any program of study. The award is renewable for a second year and recipients may not receive the award for more than two years. The recipient is selected based on academic achievement and need.

Mr. James David Holland, a graduate of Cherryville High School, Gaston College and UNC-Chapel Hill, established this scholarship fund in honor of his wife Kathy Ann Friday Holland. Recipients of this award must be enrolled in an Associate of Art or Science degree program within the division of Business and Information Technology or Early Childhood Education who has completed at least 12 hours of study at Gaston College and has achieved a minimum GPA of 2.5. Preference will be given to United States veterans, graduates of Cherryville High School or North Gaston High School.

This scholarship, provided for through the estate of Mrs. Janet Spear, provides scholarships for tuition, fees, and books to deserving Gaston College students from Gaston, Cleveland, and Lincoln counties who are in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) or LPN to RN Programs. To be qualified for this scholarship each student is required to maintain a 3.0 GPA. Should be automatically renewed for a second year to qualifying students if the student continues to meet the criteria.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. The Kiwanis Club of Gastonia is an active group of professionals who are dedicated to the service of children. Founded in Gastonia, North Carolina on December 31, 1940, the Kiwanis Club of Gastonia has a long record of service to our community. This gift is made as a tribute to the dedication and hard work of club members throughout the years to make Gaston County a better place to live, work and prosper. With this scholarship, the Kiwanis Club wishes to honor the memory of one of its longtime and most devoted members, Mr. Joseph Nelli. He retired in 1991 from FMC Lithium Division after a career of 31 years. Joe was a devoted husband and the consummate father, raising his eight children with love, compassion, and discipline. Joe was an avid golfer and bowler and loved playing backyard badminton games with his children. Joe loved to travel and visited over 25 countries with his beloved wife. The purpose of this endowment shall be to provide an annual scholarship for a promising student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources to better themselves through Gaston College. The recipient must be a Gaston County resident demonstrating financial need and been enrolled in Gaston College for a minimum of 24 credit hours if a full-time student or 12 hours if a part-time student, with a GPA of 2.5.

Mr. John Lowery and Dr. Malinda Lowery are both proud alumni of Gaston College and successful business owners and civic leaders. They attribute their success to hard work and tenacity, attributes learned while at Gaston College. The purpose of this endowment shall be to provide financial assistance for a promising student living in Gaston or Lincoln County who have a demonstrated financial need but who are not eligible for federal aid. The recipient must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.5. The scholarship is renewable for one additional year if recipients maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better and enroll in at least 12 credit hours of study per semester. Certificate, diploma or degree seeking students are eligible.

Becky B. Maxon, Patsy B. Meldrum, and John Brison III established this annual scholarship in honor of their parents, Joyce and John Brison. This scholarship is awarded to a student who is enrolled in Early Childhood Education (Degree or Certificate). The recipient is selected based on academic achievement and financial need and must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

This annual scholarship award will provide financial assistance to those seeking a certificate or diploma in the Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology Program at Gaston College. Financial need is not a requirement. Scholarships are renewable upon successful completion (GPA of 2.5 or better) of the previous semester.

Lifelong residents of Gaston County, Louie and Lynn Dean built a successful business in their home community of Dallas, NC. Their business has employed hundreds of their community member, thereby contributing to the well-being and economic success of their neighbors. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may only be awarded to Gaston County residents. Full-time students are preferred. Recipients may have their scholarship renewed for a second year provided that at least 16 credit hours have been completed and minimum GPA of 2.5 is earned. Preference will be given to students graduating from North Gaston High School who are pursuing an associate degree in business & information technology or engineering & industrial technologies. If no applicants meet these criteria, diploma seekers may be considered.

Scholarships distributed from this Fund may only be awarded to Gaston or Lincoln County residents who have attained their high school equivalency or completed their high school degree from Gaston College. Preference will be given to female students pursuing an associate degree in business administration. Recipients may have their scholarship renewed for a second year provided that at least 16 credit hours have been completed and minimum GPA of 2.5 is earned. Margaret “Mary Jo” Cloninger was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, business and civic leader who founded one of Gaston County’s most iconic and successful businesses, Mary Jo’s Cloth Store, in 1951 on her 19th birthday. She spent much of her teenage years working behind the register of her father’s family grocery store, and was pulled out of high school before graduation to work full-time. As a child she would sneak away to her mother’s sewing machine, gathering cotton scraps and stitching them together. By the time she was married, she came up with a business idea which she pitched to her father. She rented space in the back of her father’s barber shop to sell cloth to women who made clothing for their families. Because of her keen business acumen, Ms. Cloninger grew her fabric business of necessity into a specialty niche market selling specifically to other women. Mary Jo Cloninger was a shrewd and successful businesswoman during a time when the world of business was considered to be for men only. She overcame a lack of formal education and public perception of what a woman’s role should be to create a sprawling and iconic Gaston County business that has given back to its community for over 66 years.

This scholarship was established by the Civitan Club of Gastonia in memory of David L. Friday, Jr. who served as the first president of the Gastonia Evening Civitan Club when it was chartered in 1969. Through the years, Mr. Friday advanced in the service of Civitan to be Lt. Governor of Area III and Governor of North Carolina District West. He was a graduate of Dallas High School and Wake Forest University and was president of Gastonia Belting Company. Mr. Friday was a director of the Heart Society of Gaston County and the Flynn Fellowship Home. This annual scholarship is open to a student who has demonstrated good citizenship, community and school contributor, and must be a registered voter.

Michael K. (Mick) and Carla McMahan are lifelong residents of Gaston County. They met in the eighth grade at the old Dallas School, started dating in high school, and were married at age 19 when Mick was in the UC Army. In 1970 they moved to Chapell Hill with their two-year-old daughter, Anna, where Mick attended the University of North Carolina. Carla worked in Trust Funds for the University. For many years Mick and Carla owned and managed McMahan Financial in Gastonia. After Carla retired, Mick sold the company and established a new venture, Gaston Capital in Belmont. Mick and Carla want to provide scholarships to Gaston College to help deserving students attend at little or no expense so they can move on to a four-year college or into a career in a better financial position. Mullen, Holland & Cooper, PA is a law firm based in Gastonia helping North Carolina and South Carolina businesses, professionals and their employees in civil litigation, business development and estate planning for over 60 years. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may be awarded only to students who are actively pursuing a paralegal degree. Recipient must have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the time of application for the scholarship. Financial need is not a requirement for this scholarship. Scholarships are not renewable for a second year.

The award was established by Dr. Gene Maloney and his wife, Judith Robinson Maloney, a graduate of Gaston College, in memory of their son who suffered from Muscular Dystrophy. The scholarship provides financial assistance annually to a special needs student and is based on academic achievement. Recipients may be enrolled in any course of study at Gaston College. Recipient will be chosen by the Gaston College selection committee with input from the Special Needs Counselor.

This scholarship was established by the Altrusa Club of Gastonia in memory of Pauline Scruggs, its first president. This scholarship is open to a student in any course of study who has resided or worked in Gaston County for at least one year. The recipient is selected based on his/her character, integrity, academic achievement and need. Applicants are required to submit a transcript and letter from one adult who is not a relative. Letters should be no more than one page and should be uploaded in AcademicWorks as part of their application.

This scholarship was established by Mr. Larry K. Petty of Gastonia, president, Petty Machine Company, to provide financial assistance for recent graduates of Gaston or Lincoln County public schools, who have the desire to further their education as a participant in the Gaston College SPARC³ scholars program and is not based on need. The SPARC3 (STEM Persistence and Retention via Curriculum Centralized Cohorts) scholars program is designed to provide capable and motivated students the opportunity for intensive hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics instruction with laboratory experiences at the community college level which prepares them for successful completion of a four-year degree program.Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 and be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours. The donor requests that recipients fund at least 10% of their own educational expenses.

Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays promote the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons and their families and friends through SUPPORT to cope with an adverse society, EDUCATION to enlighten an ill-informed public, and through ADVOCACY to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Founded in 2009, PFLAG Gaston, an accredited chapter of the national PFLAG organization, has worked to provide support services to all who are LGBT, support the LGBT community, or are a family member, friend, or associate of and LGBT individual seeking education, support or understanding. Scholarships may be awarded to High school seniors with a 2.5 min. GPA from Gaston County Schools or current student who have achieved 2.75 GPA with 12 hours of study. Any degree or diploma may be perused. Recipient must also be an active member of the Gaston College True Colors Club or similar organization.

Friends and family of the late Polie Q. Cloninger, Jr. established this endowed scholarship to honor his memory following his death in 2003. Mr. Cloninger grew up in the Great Depression. He worked for the U. S. Postal Service, and then joined his wife in building a cloth store that attracts customers from around the world. The scholarship is awarded to a Gaston College GED or Adult High School graduate, with preference to students seeking degrees in nursing or criminal justice. The award is based on a combination of academic achievement and need. Recipients may have their scholarship renewed for a second year provided that at least 16 credit hours have been completed and minimum GPA of 2.5 is earned.

This scholarship was begun by Elizabeth Little to honor the memory of her parents, Rebecca Little who taught school in Gaston County and took teacher renewal courses at Gaston College, and Cramer Little, a supervisor at Firestone who attended Gaston College for supervisor training and lawnmower repair classes. The award goes to a student(s) based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need who is seeking an associate or higher degree.

Austin Chowdhury’s light shone brightly but was extinguished far too soon due to the battle faced by many in our community today, opioid addiction. Even during addiction, he was fully functioning and successfully continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning an undergraduate degree in Public Policy and Urban Planning. To continue Austin’s intended legacy of leaving this world a better place, his parents Tammy and Nazrul seek to educate their community about the illness of addiction so other families may avoid the pain and sorrow their son’s untimely death has caused them. The purpose of this annual scholarship fund shall be to provide financial assistance for promising students from Gaston or Lincoln County through two scholarship opportunities. The first opportunity will award a scholarship to a promising student pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Human Services Technology with a focus on Substance Abuse and has been personally impacted by a substance use disorder. A second opportunity will award a scholarship to a promising student pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in any field and has been personally impacted by substance use disorders. Applicants must demonstrate how substance use disorder has impacted them personally and how the scholarship will help them achieve their education and career goals. For the Human Services Technology scholarship, applicants must clearly demonstrate their intention of working in the field of substance abuse education or treatment upon graduation. Scholarships are renewable for a second year.

Robert Tull and friends established this scholarship in honor of his 1997 retirement from the Timken Company after more than 35 years of service. This scholarship also serves as a memorial to Mr. Tull’s late wife, Laurie Tull, who received very good nursing care while she was terminally ill. This scholarship is open to residents of Lincoln County enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program. The recipient is selected based on financial need, community involvement, volunteer experience with hospitals, nursing homes, and elderly groups along with a strong desire to be in the nursing profession.

Mr. Roland Ball served on the faculty of Gaston College for 32 years, working first as a drafting instructor and later as the Dean of the Trade and Industrial Program. He served briefly in the Marines. Scholarships awarded to Gaston or Lincoln County residents who have demonstrated financial need. Preference given to students in the Engineering and Industrial Technology programs and who have a 2.5 GPA. Scholarship is renewable for a 2nd year.

Leroy Russell was the sheriff of Gaston County from 1982-2004 and was a member of the NC Sheriffs’ Association, serving as president 1990-1991. He was a member of the Gaston County Law Enforcement Association, was a licensed funeral director, a Gaston County Schools employee, a drivers’ license examiner, and a County magistrate. He was a US Air Force veteran. Leroy was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was on the worship committee, an administrative board member and he served on the funeral committee. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may only be awarded to Gaston County residents and have been enrolled in Gaston College for a minimum of 24 credit hours if a full-time student, or 12 hours if a part-time student, have achieved a minimum GPA of 2.0, and are enrolled in a criminal justice program. Preference will be given to Gaston County Sheriff’s Office Deputies or members of their immediate family.

Mr. T.J. Solomon has established the scholarship fund to promote equity in the education of students at Gaston College. Mr. Solomon received his B.A. from Coe College and earned a J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He served as a Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force from 1975 to 1980. In addition to his career as an attorney, he has served various community organizations in Gaston County. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may only be awarded to recent graduates who have achieved a minimum high school GPA of 3.0, or a College GPA of 2.5, for current students. Financial need is not a requirement for this scholarship but may be considered. The applicant must be enrolled full-time in a curriculum program. Preference is given to students from populations that are unrepresented in their field of study. Scholarships are not renewable for a second year.

German-based Stabilus Corporation established this annual scholarship following the move of its North American headquarters to Gastonia. This award is open to residents of Gaston and Lincoln counties and to Stabilus employees and their families. The recipient is selected based on a combination of need, career interest, academic achievement, and community involvement. Preference will be given to applicants in Engineering/Technical fields of study. Stabilus will be given the opportunity to have a representative serve on the selection committee.

Longtime business associates of Mr. Steve Brown, including his most recent employer ITEMA America, Glen Raven Custom Fabrics and the Southern Textile Association, have established an endowed scholarship in his memory. This scholarship is to honor and remember a 1979 Applied Textile Technology Center (formerly known as the NC Vocational Textile School) graduate, Mr. John Steven Brown, while providing financial assistance for a promising student seeking an Associate Degree in Industrial Systems Technology. Preference will be given to full-time or part-time students interested in pursuing employment in the textile field and who have been enrolled in Gaston College for a minimum of 24 credit hours if a full-time student, or 12 hours if a part-time student. The recipient must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Addendum – At the request of Mrs. Stephanie Brown Jackson, daughter of Steve Brown, the family would like to be given the opportunity to select the scholarship recipient each year. As is practice for Gaston College, a group of 3-5 finalists will be chosen through the College’s established scholarship selection process, and will then be presented to Mr. Brown’s family members for final scholarship recipient selection.

Through the creation of The Thomas Bergheim Memorial Scholarship, Huber Technologies honors the lifework of their friend and colleague, Thomas Bergheim (1966-2018), who served the company faithfully as a Senior Field Service Specialist since 2009. Born in Cologne, Germany, Thomas was a respected and hardworking craftsman, a steady and dedicated employee and a good-hearted friend to many. Thomas always gave his best to his colleagues and its customers, having served HUBER in Germany for many years as an exclusive contractor before joining Huber Technologies stateside. Scholarships distributed from this Fund may be awarded to High school seniors from Gaston County with preference given to Hunter Huss High School Graduates with a minimum GPA of 2.75 or Gaston College students who have achieved a minimum GPA of 2.75 during at least 12 hours of study at Gaston College. Financial need is not a requirement but is strongly considered. Applicants must be seeking a diploma or degree in one of the following program areas of study: Industrial Systems Technology, Welding Technology, Mechatronics Engineering Technology, or Manufacturing Technology. Scholarships are not automatically renewed for a second year.

This scholarship was established through the estate of Elisabeth Love More as a memorial to her father, William Thomas Love, who was a mayor of Mount Holly and of Gastonia, served as Sheriff of Gaston County, and was a Senator in the NC General Assembly. This scholarship is open to Gaston County residents and recipients are to be selected by the College based on a combination of need, career interest, academic achievement, and community involvement.

Kathryn R. Brandon established this scholarship in memory of her sister, Virginia Brandon. This scholarship is open to students in programs of study preparing them for the workplace, not college transfer, including trade, industrial, technical, business and nursing programs. The recipients are selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need.

Gaston College graduate Kayren S. Brantley established this scholarship in 2001 on the occasion of her mother’s retirement from teaching. Rebecca Shiver was a 29-year-old mother of four when she came to Gaston College in 1965, with the blessing and support of her husband, Warren. This scholarship is available to students 21 years of age and older, pursuing any course of study. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage people who have been out of high school for a few years to begin their college education.

Wells Fargo Scholarship (Scholarship funds received through Gaston College) These scholarships are distributed among the 58 colleges in the community college system, which may be distributed in two payments: fall semester, $250; and spring semester, $250. To qualify as a candidate for this scholarship, a person must be full-time student enrolled in the second year of a two-year educational/technical program, must demonstrate financial need and scholastic promise, and must use the scholarship to pay for books, tuition, and transportation. The College shall establish a special committee to select recipients of the scholarship.

Established by the Seabrook family, in honor of Mr. Bill Seabrook, this scholarship is awarded to a Gaston College student in any course of study who does not qualify for a Pell grant.
