ALUMNI ASSOCIATION and VETERANS SUPPORT CENTER SCHOLARSHIP for SERVICE MEMBER PERSISTENCE YEAR 2022-2023 SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS Provided by: University of Utah Alumni Association & Veterans Support Center Value: $2,000, $1,000 Number of awards: 4 Application deadline: April 3, 2022 by 11:59 PM MST SCHOLARSHIP PURPOSE Recognizing that achieving one’s academic goals while serving in the military is challenging, the UUAA and VSC established the Alumni Scholarship for Service Member Persistence to promote student retention and graduation. SCHOLARSHIP AWARD The Alumni Scholarship for Service Member Persistence recognizes students who continue to pursue their degree while they are actively serving in the Reserves/National Guard or are active duty and pursuing off-duty education. The scholarship provides two (2) awards of $2,000 to full-time students and two (2) awards of $1,000 to students attending at least half-time to assist them in accomplishing their academic goals. Two (2) of the greater scholarships and two (2) of the lesser scholarships will only be awarded to undergraduate students that have earned 30 credit hours by the end of Spring Semester 2022. No more than one (1) award will be made to a graduate student. ELIGIBILITY • The student veteran must be actively drilling in the Reserves or National Guard or, if active duty, be pursuing off-duty education. Individuals attending the U as part of an active duty education program are ineligible. • For the greater award, the student must be a current full-time student in good standing with the University of Utah who will be attending full-time during Fall Semester 2022. • For the lesser award, the student must be a current student in good standing with the University of Utah who will be attending at least half-time during Fall Semester 2022. • If an undergraduate, the student veteran must have earned a minimum of 30 credit hours at the University of Utah by the end of Spring Semester 2022 and have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or greater earned at the University of Utah. • If a graduate student, the student veteran must have earned a minimum of 18 credit hours at the University of Utah by the end of Spring Semester 2022 and have a GPA of 3.0 or greater earned at the University of Utah. Many students who are selected to receive a University scholarship after May 12, 2015 are required by state law to certify under penalty of perjury that they are eligible to receive the scholarship as a U.S. citizen or a citizen of another country who is lawfully present within the United States. Students who have both graduated from a recognized Utah high school and who are awarded a scholarship funded by a private donor are not required to certify their lawful presence before receiving a privately funded scholarship. (This scholarship is a privately funded scholarship.) SCHOLARSHIP AWARD The Alumni Scholarship for U Vet Parents recognizes students who are veterans or service members who have dependent children residing at home with them. The scholarship provides one (1) primary award of $2,500 to full-time student veterans and three (3) awards of $1,000 to student veterans attending at least half-time to assist them in accomplishing their academic goals. The greater scholarship and two (2) of the lesser scholarships will only be awarded to students that have earned 30 credit hours by the end of Spring Semester 2022. The ASUU Student Scholarship is a scholarship awarded once per semester to students to support costs associated with basic needs (including tuition, textbooks, commuting, housing, food, etc.). The purpose of the scholarship is to support students’ overall wellbeing and help give students the ability to thrive as a student and as a person throughout their time at the University. Students are encouraged to apply and describe how this scholarship can best improve their experience at the University of Utah, with a focus on how this scholarship will help to alleviate any urgent financial needs that they may be experiencing that may interfere with being able to fully engage in the campus community. 10 scholarships in the amount of $500 will be awarded for the Fall 2022 semester. Eligibility: • Applicants must be students of ASUU for at least one (1) semester prior to applying for the ASUU Student Scholarship. The College of Architecture + Planning embraces and encourages diversity in many forms and strives to create an inclusive community that promotes an enriching and respectful environment where people with varied backgrounds, experiences, and points of view can learn and work together. The CA+P Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship provides financial support to students with demonstrated need who come from underrepresented communities. The CompU Leaders Scholarship is a cohort-based, financial need scholarship program for incoming students who will pursue a computer science undergraduate degree. CompU Leaders students will receive mentoring, additional support and training, and be guided into leadership roles in the School of Computing and in the computer science profession. The scholarship is for up to four years and up to full tuition.

Dallin Walker was preparing to attend the University of Utah when he tragically passed away in January of his senior year of high school. Dallin was an extraordinarily bright and talented individual, and had chosen to focus his creative talents on becoming a video game developer. You can learn more about Dallin’s many talents and interests in his obituary here. To honor Dallin and his passion for video game development, his family has established the Dallin Walker – Game Maker Scholarship. This scholarship provides one $1,200 scholarship to an entering freshman student enrolled in the Entertainment Arts and Engineering program and attending the University of Utah full-time during the 2021/2022 academic year. Preference will be given to first generation students and students with demonstrated financial need. Eligibility Criteria Enroll in 15 or more credits during the 2021-2022 academic year at the University of Utah; Enrolled in the Entertainment Arts and Engineering program; Demonstrated financial need; Be seeking their first undergraduate degree.

Scholarship for Utah residents who are undergraduate students attending the University of Utah full-time, majoring in Communication. Applicants must have excellent academic achievement. Award covers full tuition for two full semesters, not including summer. Due date and number of awards varies.

Scholarship for graduate students attending the University of Utah full-time, majoring in Humanities. An award of $5000 is in addition to the departmental Teaching Assistant/Research stipend (which includes tuition for the regular academic year). Selection is based on merit. Due date varies. Renewable for up to four years.

Kathy Pedersen, PA-C has dedicated her career to improving Global Health and increasing awareness of the PA profession. Kathy’s life work has been to “raise visibility of the physician assistant profession, and to innovate with academia and other audiences to identify and consider PA-like providers in settings around the world with the goal of reducing inequity and improving health access.” She has taken part in national presentations and PA organization committee volunteerism, international outreach activities, and board service with the Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC)/Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH). Kathy believes that higher education is a key for many to pursue their chosen profession and serve their communities. However, more significant barriers exist for some students in their ability to fund an education. It is Kathy’s hope that this scholarship might be able to alleviate some of the barriers that would otherwise prevent a “future” PA from receiving their education. The Lou Turilli Music Scholarship for Underrepresented Students seeks to recruit and retain students from traditionally underrepresented communities who have demonstrated a commitment to increasing access to jazz and/or classical music. All areas of the arts, music included, benefit from a collaborative environment that allows people from all backgrounds to thrive. We know scholarship availability greatly influences how students choose the institution where they will invest their time, talents, and resources. This scholarship allows the School of Music to attract promising students whose uniqueness will be valued and inevitably enrich our vibrant learning community. Purpose Selected by application, the 2021-2022 Music Scholarship for Underrepresented Students provides an annual $1,500 scholarship, renewable for up to a total of four academic years. The scholarship provides $750 of support each semester. The College of Science is pleased to announce two Multi-Year Housing Scholarships for American Indian Students valued at $12,500 per year for 4 years. Scholarship recipients will receive funding for fall and spring semesters that covers on-campus housing, a full meal plan, and some support for books and other expenses. Incoming freshman or current undergraduate American Indian students who are majoring in the College of Science (Majors: Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Physics) are encouraged to apply. Awardee must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and continue as a declared Science major for the scholarship to be renewable each year. An endowed scholarship was established in 2017 by Dr. Richard and Frances Reiser. Dr. Reiser was mentored by Dr. Reed A. Holdaway in orthodontics and practiced orthodontic dentistry for many years in Utah. The Reisers graciously established this endowed scholarship to honor the professional contributions of Dr. Holdaway with a hope that Dr. Holdaway’s legacy will carry on in the years to come. The College of Science is pleased to announce the Rosermarie Wintle Scholarship to be awarded to a graduate student in the College of Science pursing a PhD. Every other year this scholarship is awarded to a College of Science student and a School of Medicine student. The award in the amount of $9,500 will be given to a graduate student interested in research for 2022-23 academic year. The terms of the Wintle Endowed Scholarship agreement designates a preference for awarding the scholarship to a first-generation college student. Applicants must Have matriculated as a graduate student in the College of Science no earlier than Fall 2018 and have at least 1 year remaining in their graduate program. Have advanced to candidacy in their graduate program. Be actively engaged in graduate research activities. Note that this scholarship does not have a citizenship/permanent residency requirement.

Royal L. Garff Endowed Scholarship The late Professor Emeritus Royal L. Garff taught marketing and public speaking for more than 40 years at the University of Utah. Professor Garff was an internationally known member of the Communication faculty and is remembered for his energy, enthusiasm, and inspired teaching. In tribute to her husband, Professor Garff’s wife, Maxine, established the Royal L. Garff Endowed Scholarship Fund in the Department of Communication in 1993. This scholarship is awarded to deserving students in need of financial assistance and who excel academically; preference is given to students in Communication Studies or Speech Communication. In addition, preference will be given to descendants of Royal L. Garff, so long as they meet the scholarship criteria and are otherwise equal to all other applicants. For AY 2020-2021, one Royal L. Garff Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student, in the amount of $2000. Application materials to be uploaded to the website include a current CV; a 400-word essay that describes your fit with the scholarship criteria; a FAFSA form; an unofficial transcript; and the name and email address of one academic reference in the Department of Communication, who will be prompted to complete a brief online recommendation once you file your application. The deadline to make application is 16 March 2020. The Department of Communication Graduate Committee will review applications and select the recipient.

Shirley Gaufin is a 1967 alum of French at the University of Utah. She retired in 2012 from a long and successful career in Human Resources for various corporations. She is now paying it forward by providing a $2,000 scholarship each year for a Humanities student. Eligibility Applicants must be currently enrolled at the University of Utah with a declared major in a Humanities field. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong academic performance, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. However, we recognize that academic success can be measured in ways not reflected on the traditional GPA rankings. If you believe such rankings do not represent your potential for success, you may seek an exception to the GPA requirement by addressing this in your personal statement. •Applicant must include/upload all supplemental questions below.

David Keahey, PA-C, BUS, MSPH grew up in rural Idaho and graduated from UPAP in 1983 after serving three years as a decorated US Army DUSTOFF flight medic. He went on to graduate from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of University Studies (Primary Care Medicine) and a Master’s of Science in Public Health. David practiced family medicine for 24 years at the Salt Lake Community Health Centers (CHC, Inc.) where he served six years as associate medical director and medical director. He volunteered weekly at the Maliheh Free Clinic for many years caring for a diverse population of uninsured patients and precepting students. David has received numerous teaching and service awards including the 2004 Inner City PA of the Year PAragon Award from the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). In 2013, he was awarded the Maliheh Free Clinic Compassion and Service Award. Dave was only the second PA in 3 decades to be selected as a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow. Dave served in Washington DC in this capacity for one year after which he became the Chief Policy & Research Officer for the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) where he works on health care policy related to the PA profession. Dorothy S Hall was an accomplished businesswoman, philanthropist, and dear friend of the PA Program. She always found time, while raising three daughters, to support and fill several philanthropic positions. She was a devoted Ute Fan and started the Ike Hall Memorial Scholarship Fund for Utah athletics. Later, she started her own Physicians’ Assistant scholarship fund. Since the mid-1980s to 2017 Maggie Snyder, RN, PA-C, DFAAPA cared exclusively for patients with HIV/AIDs along with her physician colleague Dr. Kristen Ries. They cared for these marginalized individuals when no other medical providers were willing to serve their needs. Maggie taught the human aspect of caring for people who were afraid, alone, and struggling with the stigma of a poorly understood and devastating disease. Patients in Maggie’s practice were listened to, touched, loved, and hugged. Applicants must meet the following requirements: 1. Dr. Feldkamp, PA, MSPH, PhD is a graduate of our PA Medex Class 9 and has dedicated her career to the study of birth defects. Her interest in birth defect epidemiology began while working as a physician assistant and caring for women of reproductive age. Due to the limitations of existing data in Utah, Dr. Feldkamp led the efforts to develop a clinically based birth defects surveillance system within the Utah Department of Health. This was done as a means to conduct the research necessary to improve our understanding of pathogenesis and etiology. The Utah Birth Defect Network (UBDN) is a surveillance system that is population-based, statewide, and operates through active case-ascertainment of birth defects. Dr. Feldkamp was also one of several founding members of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network in 1997. Applicants must meet the following requirements: 1. Dick Rensch has dedicated his life to service; to our country and to the medical profession. From serving as a Navy Corpsman and Air Force PA, to retiring as an Air Force lieutenant Colonel and receiving a lifetime achievement award, Dick has devoted his life to improving the lives of those around him. He has completed many humanitarian military missions to several Native American reservations, has served on Medical teams for the Winter Olympics, has participated on State and National Committees, has sat on the Board of Directors for AAPA, and has been honored with countless awards for his outstanding dedication to the health professions. But his favorite thing about being a PA is volunteering. Dick said, “I would submit the Air Force Core Values; Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in ALL We Do. And you just cannot beat the Golden Rule; Do onto others as you would have others do onto you. He was Superintendent of Recreation and Director of Parks and Recreation for Provo City, a popular sports broadcaster and Chair of the Recreation Division (now Parks, Recreation and Tourism) of the University of Utah from 1968 to 1972. A sterling example of the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle, Linn was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 1974 and the Utah Tennis Hall of Fame in 2010 for his achievements in tennis.

About the award: This scholarship was established in 2001 by G. Mitchell Morris and June M. Morris. Mr. and Mrs. Morris are noted for their humanitarian interests and compassionate natures. The couple created one of nation’s largest travel agencies, Morris Travel, and later, Morris Air, and they travelled extensively. At age 86, Mitch fulfilled his goal of visiting all seven continents when he visited Antarctica in 2006. The Morris’ legacy at the University of Utah includes the G. Mitchell Morris Cancer Learning Center at the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Garr Cutler Energy Prize The Garr Cutler Energy Endowment was established by Dr. Garr Cutler, a University of Utah graduate, now of Eugene, Oregon, which funds The Garr Cutler Energy Prize of $1,500. The prize is awarded by the Graduate School. To apply for the Cutler Energy Prize, a University of Utah graduate student must provide a reprint of a published paper or preprint of a manuscript submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, which, in the Garr Cutler Energy Prize Selection Committee’s opinion makes a significant contribution in an area of energy. “Energy” is broadly defined to include ecological, sociological and legal matters related to energy, as well as issues in the research and development of energy resources and/or facilities. The Prize is announced at spring commencement. Eligibility Any matriculated graduate student who is enrolled and officially working toward a graduate degree in the Graduate School or in a professional school or college at the University of Utah is eligible to apply for the Prize subject to the following conditions: The student will have substantially completed all the work on the manuscript while registered as a graduate student at the University and within the academic year prior to submission of the paper. The applicant must be the sole or principal author of the manuscript. If the graduate student is not the sole author, an accompanying letter from the applicant’s advisor precisely explaining other authors’ contributions must be included with the application. The paper may be one that has been published in a peer-reviewed journal or submitted for publication, or written in a form suitable for publication. If a pre-print, a statement noting which journal it will be submitted for publication must be attached. Note: A thesis for an advanced degree provides far more detail and background information than is ordinarily possible in a published paper and will not be accepted or considered. However, a succinct paper based upon the thesis research is acceptable. A paper that is strictly a review is not acceptable. A critical review introducing original ideas and analyses is acceptable. About the award: This award is presented in honor of the memory of Gretchen Sue Weber, a Parks, Recreation, and Tourism undergraduate student who perished in a skiing accident on Baldy Shutes at Alta Ski Resort on March 20, 1980. Gretchen was a vibrant, bright and enthusiastic young woman. The award was developed by her family and friends at the University of Utah and is given annually to recognize one student who best exemplifies the characteristics of Gretchen.

Haglund Financial Relief Fund may be able to help you with scholarships aimed at enabling you to complete your degree. About the award: This award was established in 1994 by Harold Goodro and continues to serve in his memory. In addition to being a long-time ski instructor and working ski patrol at Alta, Harold taught outdoor adventure programming and environmental awareness education at the University of Utah from 1974 to 1996. His enthusiasm and dedication to quality teaching brought him international acclaim as an outstanding adult instructor in the State of Utah. He pioneered climbing routes in the Wasatch Range, including Goodrow’s Wall in Big Cottonwood Canyon, and climbed and skied all over South America, Europe and Africa. The outdoor skills courses that he developed eventually became the U’s Natural Resources Learning Program, now known as the Experiential Learning and Outdoor Recreation Education Program (U-EXPLORE).

The College of Fine Arts Advisory Board (FAAB) was established in 1992 by the J. George Jones, Jr. Trust to provide scholarship support for students within the College of Fine Arts. The FAAB awards annual scholarships to Fine Art undergraduate majors who have demonstrated excellence in their chosen field. The FAAB Scholarship is $2,000, divided in equal payments in the fall and spring semesters. Joseph and Holly Arave Endowed Scholarship in Outdoor Recreation Ethics awards an outstanding graduate or undergraduate student in Parks, Recreation and Tourism who demonstrates an enduring interest in, and commitment to, furthering outdoor recreation ethics, as well as academic achievement and financial need. About the award: This award honors the memory of Dr. Joseph (Joe) Arave, a graduate of Parks, Recreation and Tourism’s doctoral program, and associate professor, interim department chair and associate department chair from 1996 to 2011. Originally from Virginia, Joe was an avid outdoorsman whose passion for nature and gardening was only outweighed by his love for his family and faith. He left a legacy of being an excellent team player and will be remembered for his commitment to the Department. This award also honors Holly Arave, who supported Joe throughout his career and shared his love for the outdoors and his concern for students.

Fellowship Overview Marriner S. Eccles was one of the most influential architects of American economic policy during one of the most consequential periods of our country’s history. Appointed Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in 1935 and serving throughout the turbulent years of the Great Depression and World War II, Eccles was the “Father of the modern Federal Reserve”, designing and leading the major restructuring of the nation’s central bank into the form we know today. His innovative advocacy of “compensatory finance” was at the cutting edge of the New Deal, and preceded the theoretical work of John Maynard Keynes by several years. He was also instrumental in setting the direction for the US and global economy after the war, participating in the Bretton Woods Conference that established the post-war international monetary system. A keenly perceptive observer of economic issues on both Wall Street and Main Street, Marriner knew the importance of practical solutions to public policy problems. In 1975, two years before his death, he established the Marriner S. Eccles Graduate Fellowship in Political Economy to further the pursuit of excellent research on political economy that could be applied to public policy. Purpose The University of Utah Graduate School awards the Marriner S. Eccles Graduate Fellowship in Political Economy to advanced PhD and LLM students, enabling Fellows to focus on the completion of their dissertation research projects relating to political economy within the fellowship appointment year. Fellows awarded the Eccles Fellowship will have the benefit of directing their research and writing efforts without the distraction of employment in order to produce quality scholarship in political economy and its impact on public policy. The focus of the Marriner S. Eccles Graduate Fellowship is to increase the visibility of research in political economy, highlighting the practical connection to public policy. Fellows are expected to complete a scholarly manuscript on their unique research topic during their fellowship appointment. During the year, Fellows will also engage in collaborative meetings and seminars at the Marriner S. Eccles Institute for Economic & Quantitative Analysis, where they will engage with other fellows, students, and faculty. This fellowship opportunity is for full-time graduate students pursuing research in banking, business, education, finance, humanities, legal studies, health, and social sciences, and its connection with an impact on politics, public policy, and the economy. Prospective Fellows must have passed their qualifying exams and be actively engaged in research and writing. Students should be US nationals, permanent residents, or have DACA status. Fellows are provided with a $25,000 fellowship (payable in $12,500 increments at the beginning of each fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters), tuition coverage, and subsidized health insurance for the academic year. This scholarship honors Anita Ledford, MS, her tenacity for life, professionalism, and deep-seated caring for all living things. Anita completed her Masters of Science in Parks, Recreation and Tourism in 2013. During Anita’s final year in the program, she was diagnosed with an Astrocytoma brain tumor, known as Wilbur to many. While undergoing surgery and treatment, Anita went on to complete her thesis, always with an amazing sense of humor and a determination to take Wilbur down. Anita continued to work and travel during her treatment and battle, always wanting to see the beauty in the world and in others. Her fight inspired us all. Anita’s efforts to complete her thesis despite the challenges associated with her surgery and healing process were remarkable. Anita believes in all that is beautiful in people and would go to endless lengths to ensure others are taken care of. Thomas G. Stockham Medal The Thomas G. Stockham, Jr. Medal for Conspicuously Effective Teaching was established by the University of Utah in memory of Thomas G. Stockham, Jr., professor of electrical engineering, who is remembered as the father of digital recording in honor of his pioneering work in the fields of digital recording and tapeless editing. The medal is awarded to one graduate student each year for “conspicuously effective teaching.” Candidates for the medal are nominated by their faculty advisors and mentors. The recipient of the Stockham Medal will also receive a $1,000 cash prize. A maximum of one award may be granted each year. The committee may decline to award the medal in any given year. Eligibility Any matriculated graduate student who is enrolled, officially working toward a graduate degree in the Graduate School or in a professional school or college at the University of Utah is eligible to apply for the award, so long as they have worked as a teaching assistant or other instructing capacity during their graduate career. The Whisner-Appleby scholarship memorializes the lives of Professors Peter Appleby and William Whisner. The scholarship awards $4,000 to a student majoring in philosophy, to be used for tuition and books. Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students (12 hours or more) for both the fall and spring semesters of the scholarship period, and they should have a cumulative GPA of 2.0.
