Scholarships at Laurel Ridge Community College

This endowed scholarship is awarded annually in memory of C. Lynwood Athey Sr. and his loving wife, Phyllis Madagan Athey. The Scholarship was first established by their children, Clifford L. (Clay) Athey Jr., Kimberly M. Athey, Mark E. Athey, and Lori Athey Cockrell, following the untimely death of their mother on September 19, 2003. The annual scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to a graduating senior at Warren County High School who will be attending the College. C. Lynwood Athey Sr., who passed away on January 20, 2021, was a native of Warren County, who graduated from Warren County High School (Class of 1955). A gifted athlete in football, baseball, basketball, and track, Lynwood Athey attended the University of Maryland on a football scholarship before returning to Warren County and marrying the love of his life, Phyllis Madagan Athey. Phyllis Athey, a native of Stephens City, Virginia, relocated to Warren County following her marriage, and provided childcare for over 30 years to countless children, many of whom were the children of teachers in the Warren County Public School System. In recognition of their parent’s unwavering encouragement and commitment to the education of their children, grandchildren, and countless other children, the Athey family and their friends helped to establish this endowed scholarship to assist a graduating Senior at their alma mater, Warren County High School. The scholarship is intended for those students who may not otherwise be able to afford the cost of a college education. The $1,000 scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and software. The award will be equally divided between the fall and spring semesters and the student must maintain a 2.5 grade point average during the fall semester to be eligible to receive the second installment for the spring semester of their freshman year. LAUREL RIDGE COMMUNITY COLLEGE GED® SCHOLARSHIP Laurel Ridge Community College is offering one-year scholarships to qualified GED® graduates. This award was established to: Promote lifelong learning Recognize an individual who has re-dedicated him/herself to continuing education Promote increased community recognition of the knowledge and skills of GED® graduates Promote GED® credibility Assist an individual in acquiring training necessary for self-improvement The scholarship is available to Northern Shenandoah Valley Adult Education students who earned the GED® credential between June 2021 and June 30, 2022. The award will not cover payments for any academic year prior to August 2021. Four scholarships in the amount of $2,642 each will be awarded. The scholarship will be split between the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters. The award can be applied toward college tuition and fees, but not textbooks. Any unused funds will be returned to the College Board fund. The James & Martha Watkins Scholarship was established in 2022 to support educational success to students in Page County. A $950 scholarship will be given annually. The scholarship can be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books. This scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of alumnus Jonny Novgrod. The $1,000 scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. Satisfactory academic progress must be maintained in order for the recipient to receive the award for the second semester. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 in the fall semester. This scholarship is awarded annually by Luray Caverns Corporation in honor and memory of Mr. and Mrs. H. T. N. Graves who were generous benefactors to the College and received great gratification to have seen the dream of Governor Godwin come to fruition so beautifully in the College and especially the new Luray-Page County Center. Their family has devoted many hours through the years to various projects. This award, not to exceed $1,550 annually, will provide assistance with tuition, fees and or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the fall semester. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from Luray High School. This scholarship was endowed by Mr. James L. Bowman in honor and memory of his wife, Mary Jane. The scholarship will provide assistance up to $2,000 with tuition, fees, and books to a student who wishes to pursue their post-secondary education in the nursing program and who wants to work in this field upon completion of their education. The scholarship award will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the fall semester.To be eligible for this award, the applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student, be a resident of Frederick County or the City of Winchester, be enrolled in the nursing program, and maintain a 3.5 grade point average or better. Navy Federal Credit Union established an annual scholarship with Laurel Ridge Community College. The donors wish to give deserving local students the opportunity to earn a degree —particularly students who have demonstrated a commitment to service and leadership. Two scholarships in the amount of $950 will be awarded each year. Scholarship may cover tuition, fees, and books, or supplies required by the syllabus. For a limited time, unemployed and underemployed Virginians are eligible for a training voucher to pay for the cost of enrolling in a workforce education program at one of Virginia’s Community Colleges. To receive a voucher, the student must (1) attest that he/she is unemployed or underemployed due to COVID-19, and (2) enroll in an eligible academic credit or noncredit program before December 30, 2021. Eligibility: To qualify for a REV Training Voucher to enroll in a workforce program at a Virginia Community College, an individual must certify that he or she meets one of the following criteria: Any Virginian who lost his/her job due to COVID-19 and received state unemployment benefits on or after August 1, 2020, or Any Virginian who lost a full-time job because COVID-19 caused his/her place of employment to close or reduce staffing, and who is now working in a part-time job that pays less than $15 per hour. (Individuals who resigned from full-time employment to care for sick relatives or stay home with school-age children are not eligible for these training vouchers but may be eligible for other financial assistance.) The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. Al Dryer Memorial Scholarship Fund endowed by Joseph and Judith Dryer Famellette. Established in 2008 by Charlie Spiro, an alumnus and retired faculty member, the Albert M. Dryer Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually. Until his death in August 1982, Al Dryer was head of the Electronics Program at the College and was a very caring mentor to several students in the program. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. This scholarship was established in 1995 by Alfred and Dottie Whitt. This award will provide assistance with tuition, fees and books and will not exceed $1,500. This award will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the fall semester. Applicants must be enrolled as full- or part-time students. This scholarship is restricted to residents of the Henry & William Evans Home for Children Inc. The Alice and William Johnson Memorial Endowed Scholarship was started in 2015. The Scholarship was established by the Alice and William Johnson Foundation, on behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, who were residents of Bealeton, located in Fauquier County, Va. The Johnsons believed strongly in the value of education. In particular, Alice’s passion was for needy children. In keeping with their wishes, the Alice and William Johnson Foundation has created an endowed scholarship so that fund will be available to an individual who attended high school in Fauquier County – Fauquier, Kettle Run, Liberty, or Southeastern. The scholarship may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. Satisfactory academic progress of a 3.0 GPA must be maintained in the fall semester in order for the recipient to receive the spring semester award. With a network of nearly 800 local and campus chapters and 10,000 members, Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) is an international service and leadership organization founded in 1929 and committed making a positive difference for its members and the causes they support. Local chapters are encouraged to support state and local charitable projects. The local Alpha Omega Chapter #2060 held a fundraiser in February 2020 and made a donation to support a scholarship for a deserving student. Margarette Cage Matthews graduated from the Medical College of Virginia’s School of Radiology in 1948 and was a radiological technician at Winchester Memorial Hospital. Alson “Al” H. Smith, Jr. worked his way through high school delivering groceries, pumping gas, and trimming the apple trees of Harry F. Byrd. He served as a corporal with an Army military police company in Newfoundland during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Al and Margarette married in 1953, and in 1954, they bought a Tastee-Freez franchise, eventually owning 100 units in Virginia, West Virginia, and parts of Pennsylvania. In 1967, they became partners in Shenandoah Foods, a former wholesale food distribution business. Mr. Smith represented Frederick County in the Virginia House of Delegates for 20 years, from 1974 to 1993. Mrs. Smith was involved with many civic organizations, taught Sunday school, and was the choir director of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Actors Workshop and performed as the fairy godmother in Cinderella at the Wayside Theatre. Mr. Smith was a long-time supporter of the College and was instrumental in raising private and state money to finance the college’s Special Events Center and Technology Center, which was named in his honor. This building is now the location of the college’s dental hygiene clinic, performance theatre, nursing simulation lab, trades training space, and a cyber-security lab. He passed away in March 2008. Mrs. Smith, was the former chairperson of the Virginia Commission for the Arts and was a champion for the cause of arts in education. She was instrumental in establishing the Artist in Residence program for community colleges. She passed away in 2012. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had two sons, Alson, III (Skip) and David. David was a former Educational Foundation board member and pastor of Greenwood United Methodist Church. He was tragically killed in a plane crash in 1999. This scholarship honors the memory of three wonderful individuals who believed in the power of education and supported their local community college. The award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following criteria: • Must complete a scholarship application • Must be enrolled as full-time or part-time student in a business or accounting degree program • Must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 to receive the spring portion of the scholarship • Must demonstrate financial need • Preference will be given to a first generation student

Established by alumni donors in 2006, this scholarship will be awarded annually to full- and/or part-time students who demonstrate financial need and reside in the College’s service region. The College’s service region includes the counties of Clarke, Fauquier, Frederick, Page, Rappahannock, Shenandoah and Warren and the city of Winchester. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following criteria: Completion of a scholarship application Must be a full-time or part-time student Must demonstrate financial need Must have completed 15 hours Must be a resident of the College’s service region Must demonstrate academic merit by having and maintaining at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA

This scholarship was established by Angela’s family in honor of and in loving memory of her. She was born December 17th, 1976 and was the youngest of her parent’s three daughters. She was a lifelong resident of Fauquier County whom many friends and colleagues knew as “Angie.” Her smile could light up a room and her laughter was contagious. She cared deeply for her family and her job. At the time of her passing on May 2nd, 2016, she left behind a husband and two children, a son and a daughter. As her family, we understand firsthand the struggles and demands of the nursing school program. Angela went through the public schools system of Fauquier, and graduated from Fauquier High School in the year 1994. She attended George Mason University for one semester. She started working in local medical offices, and while working at Piedmont Family Practice she made the decision to become a nurse. She enrolled in the nursing program here at the College and graduated with honors and was pinned in May of 2007. She went to work for Fauquier Hospital and became a RN when she passed her state board in June on the first attempt. She proved to be well suited for the profession and had an innate passion for it. While working at the hospital, she also felt the need to better herself and her skills, and she applied herself to working for and receiving a BSN degree in 2013 from University of Phoenix through their on-line program. She wasn’t through yet, because she had plans for and had started working toward her Master’s degree in nursing. Angela was well known for her dedication and skills at the hospital, her serving on various committees, and volunteering for preceptor duty. She even volunteered as nurse for her son’s Boy Scout troop. Angela was a very passionate and dedicated nurse. The following criteria shall be used to select the annual recipient of the Angela Clore Memorial Scholarship. The following criteria must be met to be eligible for the Angela Clore Memorial Scholarship: Be enrolled in the RN program at the Fauquier Campus and be a resident of Fauquier. Maintain a 3.0 or better GPA. Be employed while attending school Demonstrate financial need Demonstrate a passion for nursing and/or necessary qualities.

In memory of their parents, John and Irene Rooney and Richard and Margaret Wiltshire, this scholarship is established in 2011 in order to offer financial assistance to local students, enhancing their educational opportunities. Each of these individuals understood the value of education and was supportive of such endeavors for their children and others outside of immediate family. Their support included teaching, transporting children, and working in administration for Virginia county schools. This Scholarship was established in their honor and in an effort to pass forward their love for and commitment to learning for generations to come. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. The Ann R. Currie Art Scholarship was established in 2010 in honor of Ann Currie. Two scholarships at $1,200 each will be given annually. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the fall semester. The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following criteria: Must complete a scholarship application Must be a full-time or part-time student Must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average First preference will be given to students enrolled in the Liberal Art Associates degree with a Fine Arts Specialization Second preference will be given to students enrolled in any Liberal Art Associates or General Studies Associates program

This scholarship was established by Automotive Industries Inc. in 1993. The scholarship helps cover the cost of tuition, fees, and books. The scholarship award will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the fall semester. The Axalta Bright Futures Scholarship was established in 2021 to support students from diverse backgrounds studying STEM & vocational fields. As a long-time employer in Front Royal, VA, Axalta is committed to helping local students become the next generation of scientists, engineers, and manufacturers to promote the vitality of the coatings industry and our customers’ industries. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. Satisfactory academic progress must be maintained in order for the recipient to receive the award for the second semester. The Bank of Clarke County Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually to a current-year Clarke County High School (CCHS) graduate enrolled in a program at the College with preference given to business-related fields of study. A current-year CCHS graduate is a person who graduated this past June or will graduate this upcoming June. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following criteria: Must complete a scholarship application Must be a current-year CCHS graduate Must demonstrate academic merit by having and maintaining at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA Priority given to students in business related field of study

Established in 2007, the Barbara Greene and Doug Hardesty Scholarship will be awarded annually to full- and/or part-time students who reside in Clarke County. The scholarship was established in honor of Barbara Greene, a College employee and mentor to Doug Hardesty. Doug Hardesty graduated from the College in May 2007. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. Thanks to an investment from Mrs. Barbara J. Byrd, which was matched by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education, a scholarship has been established to support students from Clarke County. Limited funds are available, and the amount of the scholarship will vary. A resident of Clarke County since childhood, Mrs. Byrd was a teacher for 9 years and represented the Russell district on the Clarke County Board of Supervisors for 20 years, becoming the first woman elected to the Board. She has seen firsthand the challenges faced by students and residents of Clarke County in pursuing higher education. The goal of this scholarship is to help increase educational attainment levels in Clarke County. Mrs. Byrd was motivated to establish the fund after seeing the ways her parents sacrificed and borrowed money in order to send her to college. “Going through that experience showed me how difficult it can be to find the money to cover tuition, housing, and other costs,” said Mrs. Byrd. “Whether it is a vocational/technical education, a 2-year college, or a 4-year university, motivated individuals should be given the opportunity to advance their lives in a positive way.” There are also technology grants and emergency funds available to assist students from Clarke County who demonstrate need. The Beltane Scholarship was established by donors within the College community who—as former community college graduates—wish to extend the same opportunity to prospective or current students. One scholarship of $950 will be given annually. The scholarship may cover tuition, fees, books, or supplies required by the syllabus. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the fall semester. The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following criteria: Must complete a scholarship application Must be seeking a degree or certificate Must be a full-time or part-time student Must demonstrate academic merit by having and maintaining at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA Priority given for demonstration of financial need, but not required

This scholarship is provided by Mr. and Mrs. Bob G. Sowder to assist students from Fauquier County in continuing their education at the College. Mr. Sowder was a director on the Educational Foundation. In December 1988, Mr. Sowder donated a building and 2.6 acres of land to the College which now houses the Fauquier Campus. He was instrumental in making the Fauquier Campus a reality. In addition, Mr. Sowder has devoted much hard work and time to the various projects of the Foundation. He is a true supporter of education and the College. This scholarship will provide assistance, not to exceed $1,550 for tuition, fees, and books. The scholarship award will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. Established in 2010, the Brent David Barnett Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded annually. The scholarship was established by Margaret Barnett, a long-time employee of the College, in memory of Brent David Barnett. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the fall semester. The Brent L. Kendrick Faculty Legacy Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 by Brent Kendrick, an English professor at the College. The son of a West Virginia coal miner and the first in his family to go to college, Dr. Kendrick began teaching at the College in 1998, after a twenty-five year career at the Library of Congress. Since then he has taught more than 145 classes involving more than 3,300 students. He is renowned for teaching classes both online and in traditional classroom settings and for earning consistently and remarkably high student evaluation scores. In 2008, Dr. Kendrick was selected by the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) as one of the top twelve educators among institutions of higher learning in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 2010, Dr. Kendrick received the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence, which is given annually to recognize one full-time instructor who personifies teaching excellence at Virginia’s Community Colleges. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the fall semester. The Brian Boyd Hawkins Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 in memory of Brian Boyd Hawkins. Brian was born with Cystic Fibrosis, but during his young life never let the disease slow him down or discourage him from trying new adventures. He was full of energy, love, adventure and dreams. His life was cut short in an automobile accident at the age of 16 in 2000. His family and friends established this scholarship in his memory so that someone else can have the opportunity to pursue an education and pursue adventurous dreams. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. Satisfactory academic progress (minimum grade point average of 2.0) must be maintained in order for the recipient to receive the award for the second semester. This scholarship was established by the Buettner family and Tire Distributors Inc. of Winchester in 1994. Mr. Henry C. Buettner Jr., served on the Educational Foundation Board and was instrumental in the growth of the Foundation. He was also past president of the Foundation Board when Dr. Marilyn C. Beck was president of the College. This award will provide assistance with tuition and fees. The award will be divided equally between two semesters. This scholarship was endowed in 1993 to enhance the educational opportunities of the residents of the College’s service region. The scholarship award will provide assistance with tuition and books. Established in 1993, the Carmeuse Lime and Stone (formerly O-N Minerals Chemstone) Scholarship will be awarded annually. As a corporate citizen involved in the Northern Shenandoah Valley, Carmeuse Lime and Stone is very interested in applicants who hope to work in the area when their education is complete. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the fall semester. The scholarship will be divided evenly between students from each of the following localities: Shenandoah County and Frederick County. The Carolyn A. Seltzer Nursing Scholarship Fund was established in February 2010 by James L. Seltzer in memory of his loving wife Carolyn Ann Seltzer. Carolyn was a people person, she loved talking with and meeting new people. She was especially fond of children which led her to be a teacher after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in business education from Geneva College. After starting a family, she continued as a substitute teacher in elementary, middle and high schools throughout Fauquier County. Her family and friends established this scholarship in her memory so that someone can have the opportunity to pursue an education. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. Established in 2007 by an anonymous donor, the Central High School Graduate Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Central High School graduate. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. The Chip Cumbia Endowed Nursing Scholarship was established in 2013 in his honor by Chip’s parents, O. Douglas Cumbia II and Elaine Smith Cumbia. Chip was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 1/2. Though he has limited cognitive skills, he is a highly intelligent man with a gift for remembering and knowing about many things. He has a special fondness for music; he can tell you every top hit record for the years 1960 to 1985. He seldom misses viewing The Wheel of Fortune on television. Chip graduated from Frederick County Public Schools with a special education diploma in 2000. He has worked for NW Works and he actively participates at ADAPT, a day program for special needs adults. Chip’s parents want to honor their son by endowing this scholarship in his name. The scholarship will provide assistance to highly qualified nursing students at the College who truly aspire to becoming outstanding healthcare professionals upon graduation. This scholarship award may be applied to assist students in paying tuition, fees and/or book expenses and will be divided equally between two semesters. Established in 2010, this endowed scholarship is provided by Clifton and Sandra Good of Front Royal, Va. to assist students. The Goods are true supporters of the College, having donated to the College on several occasions before establishing this scholarship. This scholarship will provide assistance for tuition, fees and books. We’ve been very blessed, said Sandra Good. And we feel as though we want to give back and assist students who have a need. The Goods experienced the College firsthand when their son, Michael, attended as a dual-enrolled student while at Warren County High School. The couple later helped a young woman who had struggled to earn the tuition money to attend the College. It was then that they decided to create a scholarship fund specifically for students. The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student and divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. This scholarship was established in 2006 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and to honor recipients of the annual Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. This year’s scholarship is in honor of the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, a generous donor and Laurel Ridge Community College’s recipient of the 2021 Leadership in Philanthropy award. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage bright, deserving students to earn a college degree, to develop leadership skills, and to serve as ambassadors for Virginia’s Community Colleges. The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following criteria: 1. A graduating high school senior who will attend Laurel Ridge Community College for the first time in Fall 2022 2. The Blue Ridge Democratic Women Committee fund this scholarship in honor and memory of longtime Democratic activists Damaris Omps Whitacre (1914-2012) and Joan Whitacre (1934-2017) for their legacy of community service, fairness and equity, and continuing education and skills enhancement. Damarais Whitacre was a former owner of Shawnee Springs Canning in Cross Junction. She was also a member of Redland United Methodist Church and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Virginia Horticulture Society. Joan Whitacre graduated from Madison College, which is now James Madison University, earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Education. She was a school teacher with Frederick County Public Schools, where she taught 2nd grade at Apple Pie Ridge Elementary, retiring after 33 years of service. Established in 2008 in honor of Denise Broy, the Denise Broy Scholarship for Excellence will be awarded annually. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters.To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the fall semester. Until she retired in December 2008 as the supervisor of the Printing Services Office of the Office of College Advancement, Denise had been employed at the College for more than 30 years. Denise began her career in 1977, when she was hired for a clerk-typist A position within the Personnel Office via the federally-funded Comprehensive Employment and Training Program. In 1979, Denise was hired as a full-time employee and assigned to the Word Processing Office (now known as Printing Services). Over the years, Denise had various job titles (Offset Duplication Machine Operator, Printing Press Operator, Printing Technician and Printing Services Supervisor), but one thing has remained constant. Denise always provided excellent customer service to those with binding, copying and printing needs. During her tenure at the College, Denise led the efforts to obtain new, state-of-the-art copying and printing equipment, which provided many cutting-edge services to College employees. In addition, Denise established a formal request process, a job tracking system, an inventory method and other procedures that have helped make Printing Services one of the most efficiently run copy and print shops within the Virginia Community College System. Sadly, Denise passed away on May 16, 2010. The Dillender Family Endowed Scholarship was established in September 2017 by Sam and Holly Dillender to honor Sam’s father, who passed away on July 12, 2016 at the age of 85. Among the values that Dillender, Sr. held dear were his faith, his community, his family, and the importance of education. An endowed scholarship in his name will help many students in our community achieve their goal of a college degree. After serving in the Korean War, Dillender earned a degree in accounting from the University of Georgia in 1955. He retired from Piedmont Airlines in 1989 and was an active member of Highland Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem for 50 years. He volunteered with the local hospital for 23 years and also delivered food with Meals on Wheels. Laurel Ridge Community College) is a special place for the Dillender family. Sam is a chemistry professor at the college, and both of his daughters are graduates of the College. The Diversity recipient is selected by the Laurel Ridge CC selection committee. This scholarship is designed to award exceptional and talented students who have been traditionally underrepresented on college campuses, and who are culturally, ethnically, or racially diverse that will enrich the college community. This scholarship provides tuition & fees for up to 12 credits for the fall and spring semesters. A 2.5 GPA in the fall semester is required to maintain the spring portion of the award.

Established in 1997, the Dollars for Scholars Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually. On September 13, 1997, more than 400 supporters of the College gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Hazel to raise funds for an endowment to benefit students. The fund raiser was a success, and as a result, a permanent endowment of more than $250,000 was initiated. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. This endowed scholarship was established in 2019 in memory of Dorothy Margaret Overcash, affectionately known as Miss “O.” Miss Overcash graduated from Worsham High School and received both Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees from Longwood College in Farmville, VA. She taught mathematics, English and reading at Handley High School in Winchester from 1946-1977, at which time she became Supervisor of Secondary Education until her retirement in 1990. During her tenure with the Winchester Public Schools, Miss Overcash served in numerous capacities. She was the Principal’s Alternate to the Executive Council from 1949 to 1955, Co-sponsor of the Executive Council from 1955-1966; Sponsor of the Junior Red Cross from 1965 to 1969; and Co-sponsor of the Booster Club from 1969 to 1976. She was Co-sponsor of the graduating classes of 1952 and 1957. In 1981 she received the Ancil Gray Award “For Outstanding contributions to the ideals of the Judges Athletic Association.” Miss Overcash co-edited The Lengthened Shadow, a book about Dr. Garland R. Quarles, former Superintendent of Winchester Public Schools. The Archives at John Handley High School exists today because Miss Overcash realized the importance of preserving the history of the school. Through the year she safeguarded documents and memories related to the school, hoping that someday a permanent home for these artifacts would be established. During the seventy-fifth anniversary of the school in 1998, an Archives room was named for her. In addition to being an educator, Miss Overcash was a lover of history and preservation; she was a Director Emeritus member of the Kernstown Battlefield Association. She knitted sweaters and hats for children and tended to her flower garden with enthusiasm. Her heart was warmed each time former students crossed her path and she could reconnect with them. The scholarship may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. Satisfactory academic progress must be maintained for the recipient to receive the scholarship for the second semester. The Dr. Kathleen (KW) Wotring Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 in honor of Dr. Kathleen (KW) Wotring. Dr. Wotring joined the College in 2003 as the College’s first Coordinator of Health Professions. As a registered nurse, she had served in hospital nursing leadership and in critical care prior to joining the College. She retired in 2010 as Dean of Learning for Business, Technology, Science and Health Professions. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the fall semester. Ray and Alpha Nance grew up in the Moneta area of Bedford County, Virginia. Both served in World War II, he in the 29th Infantry Division at Normandy and she in the Army Nurse Corp. They married near war’s end and returned to Bedford to begin a family of three children. Ray and Alpha realized the importance of education early in life from the local public school system and later from family assistance and the GI Bill. From his job as a rural postal carrier and her care for family and part-time nursing, they supported college degrees for each of their children thereby providing a foundation for careers in education, banking, and finance. The scholarship given in their memory by Susan and James Cobb acknowledges the help Ray and Alpha received and the continuing importance of giving others who value education the opportunity to improve their lives. The scholarship is open to a single parent 25 years of age or older, who is seeking a job transition and is ready to begin the first step toward a sustainable and meaningful career. The scholarship is supportive toward two semesters. The scholarship may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. The endowed scholarship was established by the Wisecarver family to honor their parents, Anne Duvall and Eddie Wisecarver. Anne Duvall Wisecarver was a nurse for over 45 years, working at Winchester Memorial Hospital, in the offices of Drs. Robert York and B.N. Chambers, and later, at Mt. Weather. She was a lifelong resident of Clarke County until her passing at the age of 85. Eddie Wisecarver was co-owner of Wisecarver’s Gents Shop, and also worked for Charlestown Races, and the United States Postal Service. Like Anne, he was a lifelong resident of Clarke County until his passing at age 86. The Wisecarver family believes that a scholarship to benefit a nursing student at the College, with preference given to Clarke County residents, is a wonderful way to honor the legacy of their parents, including both their father, who valued education; and their mother, a woman who loved the nursing profession and placed a high value on the importance of a college degree. Son, Stephen, was a psychology professor at the College, and daughter, Brenda, is a registered nurse in Richmond. Established in 2008, the Edward T. Bromfield Jr. Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually. Mr. Bromfield, an early advocate of the College while editor of the Warren Sentinel, served on the College’s site selection committee before the institution was actually established. He later served on the College Board from 1975 until 1983 as a member and chairman. A resident of Front Royal, Mr. Bromfield died in 1998. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. Established in 2007, the Elsie B. Tracy Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually. The scholarship was established by the estate of Elsie B. Tracy. Mrs. Tracy was born in 1918 in Shoreham, Vt., and had a career as a federal government employee. She was married to William R. Tracy from 1953 until Mr. Tracy passed away in 1975. Mrs. Tracy lived at Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury in Frederick County, Va. from 1989 until her passing in 2006 and thought very highly of Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury employees. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. Established in 2007, the Emerson and Helen Williams Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually. The scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Williams, residents of Rappahannock County, Va. In 1983, Mr. Williams retired as the head of the pension fund at the United States Steel Corporation – which is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa. – after 33 years of service. Mrs. Williams, a retired educator and school superintendent, served school systems in Fairfax County and Rappahannock County for a total of 22 years. She previously served on the College Board. The couple has four children and 12 grandchildren. When asked why they made such a generous contribution to the College, Mr. and Mrs. Williams said, “We have the teaching bug. We are able to benefit those who need assistance and help them to get taught. Also, as retirees, we no longer actively impart knowledge. However, through this scholarship, we can still help with and facilitate learning.” The couple also noted their fondness for the current College president as a reason they chose to invest in the students at the College. In June of 2011, the College lost a beloved mathematics instructor. Evan Humbert was an inspiring teacher. In many ways, he was a quiet hero in the northern Shenandoah Valley. During Evan’s time teaching at the College, he was known for always being among the students. Whether it was teaching in the classroom, advising a student organization, or holding his office hours in the student lounge, it was evident that the students were his source of energy. These same traits held true throughout the community, where Evan was actively involved in multiple local churches and community service organizations. Evan was a devoted partner and a loving father and will be deeply missed. His legacy lives on through this fund which was established through the gifts of his family, friends, students, and colleagues, so many of whom he touched in a way that changed their lives forever. This endowed scholarship was established in 2019 by the Carbaugh family in memorial to Frances Carbaugh and in honor of Robert Carbaugh. They were both born in Stephens City, VA, and lived most of their lives in this area. As the eldest child of seven in her family, Frances helped take care of her younger siblings throughout her teens and early adulthood. She was mostly a homemaker during her 63 years of marriage to Robert. She was employed in the payroll office of American Viscose, the Northern Virginia Daily Newspaper and Commercial Press. Robert grew up on a family farm and took care of the chickens. On the farm, he trapped for fur and sold it to Sears Roebuck & Company. The farm was located on a previous Indian settlement, and he amassed a large collection of Indian arrowheads. He worked for Potomac Edison for 36 years and has now been retired for more years than he worked. He enjoys gardening and sometimes had as many as 125 tomato plants in his large gardens. Both Frances and Robert needed nursing care in their later years, with Frances needing skilled nursing. The family observed the level of care provided by the nursing professionals who cared for both Frances and Robert, and believe that establishing a nursing scholarship in their name would be an excellent way to memorialize and honor Frances and Robert by helping to educate future generations of nurses. This scholarship was endowed in memory of Frank Brumback (1924-2017) by his niece Holly Dillender and her husband Sam, who teaches chemistry at Laurel Ridge Community College. Their two daughters are alumni of the College. A native of Frederick County, Brumback was a supporter of the College and spoke proudly of his involvement—along with others in Frederick County—leading to the county’s selection as the location for the College, which opened in 1970. Brumback was a past chairman of the Frederick County Zoning Appeals Board and a past member of the Frederick County Planning Commission from 1975-1989, serving as chairman for eight years. He was a life-long farmer and orchardist and Vice President of Woodbine Farms, Inc. Over the years, Brumback was involved in many agricultural-related endeavors as a member of the Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District, Southern States Cooperative, Virginia Agricultural Foundation, and Virginia Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services to name a few. Brumback also had an abiding interest in community banking. He was a founding member and chairman of the Bank of Frederick County, Virginia Savings Bank, and The Marathon Bank. He was also vice chairman of First Virginia Bank – Shenandoah. He was a member of many service organizations and a founding member of the Frederick County Rotary Club. Established by Diane Beidler in 2006 in memory of her husband, this scholarship will be awarded annually. Fred B. Beidler was born in Woodstock, Va. on July 18, 1914, to Dr. C.C. Beidler, a local veterinary surgeon, and Clara Baker Beidler. Fred Beidler graduated from Woodstock High School in 1932 and attended Massanutten Military Academy. After completing his schooling, Beidler worked at various businesses, including Wenders Department Store in Woodstock for 12 years. In 1945, with the help of his family, Beidler started Beidlers Furniture Store, a major appliance and furniture store, which he operated successfully for 28 years. Beidler was a lifetime member of the Woodstock Christian Church Disciples of Christ, where he served as a deacon, elder, trustee and co-chairman of the Parsonage Building Committee. He married Diane Peer Beidler on June 15, 1963, and enjoyed 42 years of life together. In 1973, Beidler retired and sold his business to the Cline family, which still operates the store under the same name. Beidler enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean. He died on April 14, 2005, in Sebring, Fla., where he and his wife had lived during the winter months since 1974. The Fred C. and Michele M. Fielding Scholarships for Health Care Professionals was established in 2016 by Fred and Michele Fielding in gratitude for their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Fred and Michele have been residents of Page County for over 30 years, moving from Arlington, Virginia. Fred and Michele believe that scholarships are critical to increasing the opportunities available to Page County students and encourages them to remain in the county with the prospect of above average wage potential. This scholarship was established in 1998 by T. Carter Fussell in honor of his mother, a supporter of higher education. Mr. Fussell served on the Educational Foundation Board of the College from 1997 until his death in July 2000. Mr. Fussell had served as Vice-Chairman of the Board and was a member of the Executive, Investment, Membership, and 30th Anniversary Gala Committees. This scholarship was established in 2014 by LTC’s Ann and Ernie Grisdale on behalf of their family to honor veterans who have served their country through military service. Following a 20 year Army career, Ernie, a veteran of Viet Nam, served as a professor of chemistry for at the College for 30 years. Ann Grisdale served 29 years in the Army, 14 years of active duty and 15 years in the Army Reserve. The four Grisdale children have been strong supporters of military service, continuing the 50 consecutive years of service in the Army, with 3 serving in the Army, including tours in Kosovo and the Sinai, and with combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. Ernie and Ann believe that education and educational opportunities are essential for our Nation’s future and would like to insure those who have sacrificed so much in order for all Americans to have an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of this great nation, have an opportunity to further their education. In honor of veterans, the Grisdale family established this endowed fund to honor Veteran students, currently enrolled in a Science class in Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Geology to help with the cost of textbooks. A minimum of $50 will be available to the first 14 students applying for funding up to limits available. Additional funds may be awarded should funding become available. This scholarship was established by friends and family of Harvey L. Pearson to honor his many contributions to family, community, and country. Harvey L. Pearson, born in 1925, grew up in rural Fauquier County. He was drafted in 1943 into the Army Air Corps, serving as a waist gunner on a B17 out of an army base in Foggia, Italy. He flew 50 combat missions, seven of which were over the Polesti, Romani, oil fields—one of the most dangerous targets of the war. Upon completion of his military service, he used the GI Bill to attend Virginia Tech, representing the first in his family to graduate from college. He majored in business. Pearson returned to Warrenton and served in the Clerk’s Office of the Circuit Court of Fauquier County for 41 years, 31 years as elected Clerk. He was active in the business community and served on the boards of a local bank and a local savings and loan. He was a leader in the community as president of the Rotary Club of Warrenton, Jaycees, a member in good standing of the Warrenton Baptist Church, and was instrumental in supporting many community causes. During his career, he was active in the General Assembly as a close confidante of Delegate Tom Frost, Al Smith, and after retirement, served as legislative aide to Delegate Jerry Wood. Staunchly proud of his family, Pearson was married to the former Dorcas Morgan of Jackson, Georgia, for 59 years. They had three children: Gary, Debbie, and Dennis, as well as six grandchildren. Complete an essay of 500 words or less on the topic of “Why you are interested in a career in business and what do you hope to do with your degree?” First preference will be given to a student enrolled in a business program. Second preference will be given to a student pursuing a degree and career in agriculture. In the event that a student pursuing a degree in business is not available, the scholarship may be awarded to a Fauquier County student pursuing a degree in agriculture. Should the student be pursuing a degree in agriculture, the scholarship should be “Why are you interested in a career in agriculture and what do you hope to do with your degree?”

This scholarship was established by Heather’s family in honor of, and in loving memory, of her. She was born Heather Elise Fritz on July 25, 1986 and was the oldest of three daughters. Her vibrant and outgoing nature made her an active part of her community. While she grew up a Fauquier County resident, she later moved to Northern Virginia where she planted her own family roots with her husband, four children, and grandmother. Her love for education ran deep, as she excelled during her time at Liberty High School, both in and out of the classroom. She attended LFCC (becoming Laurel Ridge Community College) as a dual enrolled student during her senior year of high school, then after high school, she continued at LFCC (becoming Laurel Ridge Community College) to obtain her Associates of Arts & Sciences Degree in Education in 2006. While her plan was to return to school to complete her bachelor’s degree, she put that goal on hold to focus on raising her children. During that time, though, she also provided in-home daycare for other children, and, when her children entered school-age, she became an active volunteer in their schools and classrooms as well. While Heather’s vivacious energy knew no bounds—a love of all things spooky and strange, sky diving adventures, and, of course, her intense love of family—she wrestled with her mental health. She lost that silent battle on November 26, 2018 when she took her own life. Her family did not fully realize the hold it had on her; she will be forever missed. The family would like to honor her memory and raise awareness to the constant battles raging on with people batting mental illness by establishing this scholarship in her name. The J. Allen Kagey Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 by the Kagey family in loving memory and tribute to Allen Kagey. Mr. Kagey’s daughter, Kathy Ware, is a professor of Health Information Management and Natural Science at the College. Mr. Kagey was born and raised on a farm in Shenandoah County. He learned the value of persistence and hard work while growing up on that farm. In 1956, he left Shenandoah County for Lenoir-Rhyne College (now University) to study Sociology. He worked two jobs at the same time to pay for college and finished his degree in four years. Even though he came from a long line of educators, he was not interested in going into education. Mr. Kagey returned to the Shenandoah County to work, but quickly discovered Sociology was not going to give him the career he wanted. In 1961, he began teaching civics and geography at Stonewall Jackson High School. Shortly thereafter, he obtained a Master’s degree in Education from Madison College (now James Madison University). Mr. Kagey served the Shenandoah County Public School system for 38 years, starting as a high school teacher, to a guidance counselor, to assistant principal to principal. He spent time in all three of the high schools and many of the middle schools (Woodstock Middle, New Market Middle, Strasburg Middle, Signal Knob Middle and finally, North Fork Middle). Mr. Kagey valued hard work, spending many hours at the schools, making sure each was in proper order, and helping everyone from the custodian to a teacher. He cared greatly for his students and wanted to see each succeed, whether they were going on to college or going into a trade. Education and his students were his passions. This scholarship was endowed by Mrs. Beverley Shoemaker and her daughter, Rachel, in memory of their father and grandfather, respectively, Mr. James L. Bowman. The scholarship will provide assistance with tuition, fees and books for students pursuing a degree in business administration. The Jeffery L. Ross Memorial Scholarship was established by Mr. Charles and Mrs. Thelma Ross. Charles “Charlie” Ross of Front Royal, Virginia, died on April 23, 2013 at the age of 90. He was predeceased by his wife Thelma and his son Jeffery. Mr. Ross was a retired computer technician and a veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre and in the Battle of the Bulge. He named the College as the beneficiary of his estate, to establish an endowed scholarship in memory of his son Jeffery. Mr. Ross wanted the scholarship to “assist deserving students, as determined on the basis of financial need, character and scholastic performance.” The amount of the scholarship is $2,000 and may be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books. The award will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the fall semester. Established in May 2004 by employees in honor of the College’s third president, John J. Ski Sygielski. This scholarship will be awarded annually to students who meet the criteria below. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. A scholarship to support students enrolled at the College was established by the Nerangis Family in June 2021 in loving memory of John R. Rice. John was a graduate of John Handley High School and Hampden-Sydney College, where he earned an economics degree. His 40-year career with McDonald’s began with a part-time job in high school at John Handley High School when he was 16 years old. He worked at McDonald’s Restaurant at 6 Valley Avenue, Winchester, Virginia. He was dedicated to his work with the Nerangis Management Corporation, where he was Vice President of Operations. He was well respected by his peers, his employees, his friends, and the community. With his work ethic, his honesty, his loyalty and his sense of humor, he is deeply missed. He was a devoted and caring husband of Gay Rice and loving father of two sons, Daniel and Dillon. John loved living in the Shenandoah Valley and enjoyed working with and mentoring young people. He taught children’s Sunday school for 16 years at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester. The following criteria must be met to be eligible for this scholarship: Complete a scholarship application and the federal aid application (FAFSA) Be enrolled at the Middletown Campus as a full- or part-time student Be employed by any McDonald’s restaurant operated by Nerangis Management Corporation. There are two restaurants in Front Royal (Winchester Rd. and South Street) and six in Winchester (Kernstown, Pleasant Valley, Amherst St, Gerrard St. Rutherford Crossing, and Berryville Ave). Preference given to a student who demonstrates exceptional academic achievement. Satisfactory academic progress of a 2.75 GPA must be maintained in the fall semester for the recipient to receive the spring semester award.

The Virginia Beta Iota Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary sorority for women educators dedicated to educational excellence, altruism, and world understanding. A scholarship was developed in 2021 for those graduates who will continue their education at a four-year college and pursue a degree in education. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. Satisfactory academic progress must be maintained in order for the recipient to receive the award for the second semester. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the fall semester. This scholarship was established in 2011 by Dr. Katherine P. Simpson in an effort to create an opportunity to pursue an education for a student that might not otherwise have had that chance. Through her service as a faculty member in the English department for many years, Dr. Simpson consistently showed her commitment to students and making the learning experience as rich as possible. Dr. Simpson’s passionate approach to teaching English became a contagion that students responded to and often rose to the challenge of meeting her high expectations. This scholarship fund, established in her honor, is intended to give more students that same opportunity to rise to the occasion and achieve their potential. The Kayleigh Plamondon Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Debbie Plamondon and her youngest and oldest daughters, Trina and Rachel Plamondon, and named for her middle daughter, Kayleigh Plamondon. Kayleigh grew up in the Bluemont, Va., area and attended Loudoun Valley High School. She graduated in 2005. Her loved ones describe her as being a free spirit; always smiling; and loving her family, friends, dogs, work and horses. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Kayleigh was pursuing a degree in accounting at the College at the time of her death in June 2009. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the fall semester. One scholarship per high school is awarded in honor of the Local College Board. This scholarship is competitive based on academic achievement, leadership as demonstrated through extracurricular activities and citizenship. The selection of recipients is made by the Laurel Ridge Community College Scholarship Committee. These funds can be used for tuition and fees only. A 2.5 GPA in the fall semester is required to maintain the spring portion of the award.

This scholarship was established by Alfred and Klara Kummli and Nellie Bossert of Rappahannock County, who strongly supported the mission of the community college and its service to the community. Mr. Alfred Kummli served on the Board of Directors of the Educational Foundation from 1993 to 2004 and was Chairman of the Foundation Board from 1998 to 1999. The Emergency Assistance Funds are designed to address financial hardship faced by students caused by recent unexpected life events that could affect their continuing education. Examples of emergency situations are house fire, unanticipated medical issues, homelessness, unanticipated marital separation, and/or job loss. To be eligible for emergency funds, you must have: earned a 2.0 cumulative GPA be enrolled in at least 6 or more credit hours currently Preference: students who have successfully completed a semester Students applying for Emergency Assistance Funds understand that: their financial aid accounts will be reviewed with the Foundation before a determination can be made funds are generally not used for tuition, professional development courses, or other school-imposed fees; however, exceptions can sometimes be made. funds will not be issued to students. Les Nichols was a long-time resident and business leader in Fauquier County. He started and owned a health food store on Main Street in Old Town in the 1980’s before joining Piedmont Press and Graphics. Les was a founding director and a moving force behind the creation of the Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce. At the time of his passing, Les was the business development director for Carson, Ashley & Associates, LLC. Les was very active in the community and held a special place in his heart for young adults. Les’ family and friends established this scholarship to honor his legacy and to help continue to extend his influence on local youth into the future. The Les Nichols Scholarship will be awarded as a $1,000 annual scholarship. The award will be split between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. The Blue Ridge Democratic Women Committee fund this scholarship in honor and memory of Democratic activist Linda Catherine Zawacki and her legacy of community service, dedication to skills enhancement and continuing education. Zawacki served 4 years in the Air Force in order to help pay for her college degree. She graduated from California Polytechnic Institute with a degree in mathematics and engineering. After college, she was hired by Martin Marietta in Lompoc, CA, as a software engineer on NASA’s space shuttle program. In 1984, she moved to northern Virginia to work on the company’s FAA contract. While working for Martin Marietta, she was sent to Ottawa in Canada for two years to set up Martin Marietta Canada. She finished her career with Lockheed Martin as a VP and project manager in April of 2008, receiving many awards along the way. This scholarship will be awarded to a student in a STEM-H program. Linda and Roger were both educators- she taught at James Wood High School for 34 years and he was a professor at the College for 40 years. After helping their daughter (a teacher/librarian) and their son (an accountant) obtain their bachelor’s and master’s degrees, they decided to offer support to others wanting more education. The story of Martha and James Nerangis is a story of the American Dream. Jim and Martha did not have the opportunity to attend college. Jim became the head of his household at the age of 14, after his father died. Martha had the chance to attend Vassar College, but was instead required to take care of six younger siblings, after her mother died. In 1935, Martha Poulmas, 18, married Nerangis, 21, in Corfu, Greece, where Jim was born and raised. They then traveled by ship to Martha’s hometown of Poughkeepsie, New York, where Jim worked in her family’s Greek diner. Jim particularly admired the customers who wore pressed white shirts and neckties. He was eager to follow in their footsteps, learned that they sold insurance, and started working for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1941. Jim rose through the ranks, from agent, to general assistant manager, to district manager. Likewise, Martha was very smart, always enjoyed learning, and worked hard, supporting her husband and raising two sons. Martha and Jim celebrated 71 years of marriage, two sons, six grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. They moved to Winchester in 1997 and loved living in the Shenandoah Valley. They would have been exceptionally proud to know that a scholarship in their name will help hard working, single parents in our community achieve their goal of a college education. This scholarship was endowed by Mrs. Mary Henkel in 1994 to assist citizens in the College’s service region in achieving their educational goals. Mary Elizabeth MacKenzie Henkel was a native of Winchester, Va. She and her husband, Carroll Hess Henkel, and his partner, John Harris, started Henkel-Harris Company Inc. in 1946. Following the death of her husband in 1969, Mrs. Henkel assumed the presidency and later became Chairman of the Board in 1982 and was Chairman of the Board Emeritus from 1996 until her death in November 2001. Mrs. Henkel dedicated her priorities and philanthropic interests to projects related to building community, generously contributing leadership, resources, time, and energies to numerous organizations, including the College. She was a member of the Educational Foundation and supported the College in a variety of ways. She donated Henkel-Harris furniture to the College, generously supported the College’s fundraisers and friend-raisers, served as a role model for students, and initiated a scholarship endowment to support students in their aspirations to enter college. Among the many honors and awards she received was an Honorary Associate Degree in Humane Letters from the College This scholarship will provide assistance with tuition, fees, and books. This scholarship was established in 1991 in memory of Maurice J. Pat Duffey by his family, friends, and colleagues. Mr. Duffey was a dedicated member of the College faculty for 20 years as professor of business and was named Professor Emeritus shortly after his retirement in 1990. This scholarship, established by William and Marie Boaz, is in honor and loving memory of their son, Michael, a student at the College at the time of his death in September, 2001. Mike was a 1999 graduate of Central High School in Woodstock, Va. where he had been active in drama and chorus and had served as President of the College’s Performing Arts Club. This award will be made to a full-time student who shares Mike’s passion for, and has been active in, the fine and performing arts. This scholarship will provide assistance with tuition, fees and books not to exceed $1,200 and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. Grants will be awarded Virginia’s Community Colleges for the purpose of supporting students pursuing STEM-related programs such as: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Automotive, Aerial, Aviation Maintenance, Mechatronics, and any skilled trades programs such as HVAC, Facilities Maintenance, or other programs specific colleges would like to propose for inclusion.

This scholarship was endowed in 1995 during the College’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. Governor Godwin first entered politics in 1947 when elected to the House of Delegates. During the 30 years he held public office, he stood for election 17 times and was never defeated. During Governor Godwin’s administration, he became known as Virginia’s Education Governor, taking the lead in upgrading education at every level from kindergarten through graduate school. The Virginia Community College System was initiated and developed during his first term, allowing practically every Virginian who wishes to pursue higher education to do so. Much credit is due to those legislators led by Governor Godwin who, in 1966, decided that the time was right for opening the doors of higher education to all citizens. Three scholarships will be awarded. They will provide assistance with tuition, fees, and books not to exceed $1,500 each. These awards will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. The Monford D. and Lucy L. Custer Endowed Nursing Scholarship Fund was established by the Monford D. and Lucy L. Custer Foundation in memory of Dr. Monford D. Custer Jr. and his wife, Lucy. The scholarship honors their passion for the community, education and philanthropy. They moved to Winchester in 1947, where Dr. Custer launched a successful medical career which spanned 34 years. While serving as a member of the Winchester Memorial Hospital medical staff, Dr. Custer was instrumental in planning and establishing the Winchester Surgical Clinic. Dr. Custer also assisted in establishing the Free Medical Clinic in Winchester and, with his wife, was instrumental in the establishment of the Eleanor Wade Custer School of Nursing at Shenandoah University. In addition, he encouraged and helped implement the Operating Room Technicians program, which is now taught at the College. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a full- or part-time nursing student. The scholarship award varies; may be applied toward tuition, fees and books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. Mr. and Mrs. Yurgaitis of Warrenton were patron sponsors of the Dollars for Scholars event held in September of 1997 to raise funds for a scholarship endowment to benefit students attending the College’s Fauquier Campus. As a result, a scholarship fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Yurgaitis in September 1997. This award will provide assistance with tuition, fees, and books and other educationally related expenses. The award will be divided equally between fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the fall semester. This endowed scholarship was established in 1992 by the National Fruit Product Company of Winchester. The award will provide assistance with tuition and fees, not to exceed $750. The Nellie Comer Robinson Scholarship Fund was established by family and friends in memory of Nellie Elizabeth Comer Robinson. Ms. Robinson and her seven sisters were the largest immediate family to graduate from James Madison University during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Ms. Robinson was also the youngest graduate at that time, receiving a bachelor of science degree in education in 1945 at the age of 18. She began teaching at Rosemary Hills Junior High in Silver Spring, Md. with her sister, Catherine. However, the majority of her professional career was spent teaching classes in English, history and Latin in Page County, Va., where she also served as president of the Page County Education Association. During this time, she married Saul Robinson of Luray and had two children, Starr and Stuart. She enjoyed other passions like playing the piano and organ; attending St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ingham and Luray; being a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; being part of the Shenandoah Alumni Association; and playing bridge until her death in July 2009. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. The Opportunity for Future Success Grant(s) were established in 2019 by two retired educators dedicated to students at Mountain View High School. The donors wish to give deserving students from Mountain View High School the opportunity to earn a degree from Laurel Ridge Community College – particularly students who might not believe they can afford college. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. Satisfactory academic progress must be maintained in order for the recipient to receive the award for the second semester. A scholarship for Page County High School graduates was established in 2007 by Dr. Morgan Phenix, in honor of his parents, Dr. Philip and Gena Phenix, recognizing their abiding love for education. In 2011 that scholarship and the Morgan S. Phenix Scholarship, established in 2008, were combined to provide for an endowed scholarship for graduates of Page County High School. Dr. Philip H. Phenix was the Arthur I. Gates Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Education at Teachers College at Columbia University. His fields of study were mathematics, physics, theology, philosophy and education. Mrs. Gena Tenney Phenix was a faculty member at Barnard Columbia from 1935-1943. She was a musician, scholar and spiritual counselor. One of her favorite quotes was Rejoice in the life and work of others. Dr. Morgan S. Phenix represented Page County on the College Board from 2000 until 2008. Dr. Phenix retired in 2008 after sixteen years as principal of Page County High School and subsequently served as dean of humanities, mathematics and social sciences, and later as associate vice president of instruction at the College. In 2009 Dr. Phenix was elected Chairman-at-Large of the Page County School Board. He remembers, with pride and gratitude, the students and staff of Page County High School. The Page County High School Phenix scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. The Pathway to Opportunity Nursing Scholarship will be awarded annually to students who meet the criteria below. Scholarships may be applied toward any program-related fees or costs*. This memorial scholarship was established in 2021 by English professor Dr. Brent L. Kendrick to honor his soulmate and life partner of 20 years and to support future generations of Laurel Ridge CC students who are enrolled in a health sciences program. Allen’s friends, family and colleagues have also contributed to this scholarship, which is a fitting tribute to a man who not only took great pride in his career as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) but also encouraged, mentored and taught many others who were new to the field. Allen earned his CST degree at Jupiter Medical Center (Jupiter, FL) and always celebrated and remembered one of his professors there because she nudged him onward and upward. From 2016 to 2020, Allen worked at Valley Health’s Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, VA. Before joining Valley Health, he served as the Director of the Surgical Technology Program at Piedmont Virginia Community College (Charlottesville), and he distanced-taught the first Surgical Technology classes offered at the Laurel Ridge Community College (Middletown and Warrenton). Additionally, he served as a Certified Surgical Technologist at Augusta Health (Fishersville, VA), and during his prior years as a traveling Surgical Technologist, he distinguished himself at Geneva General Hospital (NY), at St. Vincent’s Hospital Emergency and Trauma Center (Green Bay, WI), and at Stonewall Jackson Hospital (Lexington, VA). The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. Satisfactory academic progress must be maintained in order for the recipient to receive the award for the second semester. This scholarship was established in 1994 by the Educational Foundation and students, faculty and staff in memory of Paul J. Paige Sr. Paul was an electronics student at the College. He was a friend to all; active in the Student Government Association and the Ambassadors; named to Who’s Who Among Community College Students for 1993-94; and a tutor. Paul also volunteered many hours to the friend/fundraising events of the Foundation. Paul was committed to his studies and encouraged and inspired other students. The Student Ambassadors sponsor a fundraiser with proceeds benefiting this endowment fund. This award will provide assistance with tuition and fees. Remington Archives Room and the Paul Wolk Library at the Fauquier Campus. This award will provide assistance with tuition, fees and books. Joe and Roberta “Bobby” May have endowed a scholarship in memory of their beloved son Philip. They believe in the power of education and enthusiastically support the mission of the College. Joe grew up on a farm in Rockingham County, Virginia. He admits to “not distinguishing himself academically” in high school. After three years in the Army, including one year of electronics school, he was “conditionally” admitted to Virginia Tech. Joe describes his time at Virginia Tech as one of the turning points in his life. He proved himself academically, earning a B.S. degree in electrical engineering. In 1977, Joe and his wife Bobby founded Electronic Instrumentation and Technology (EIT). Now a $48 million a year company, EIT has more than 250 employees and conducts business in more than 30 countries. Joe and Bobby continue to work at EIT, where Joe remains chairman and chief technology officer of the company. Joe also served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1993 to 2014 and was once described as “having more patents than any member of the General Assembly since Thomas Jefferson served there.” The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following criteria: Must complete a scholarship application A full-time student is preferred, however a part-time student may be considered Preference is given to students enrolled in courses leading to an Associate of Science – Engineering Specialization, with the intent to transfer to a 4-year university for further study in engineering. A student enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science – Engineering Technology program may be considered. Satisfactory academic progress of a 3.0 GPA must be maintained in the fall semester in order for the recipient to receive the spring semester award. The Puskar Switzer Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 by Catherine Puskar Switzer. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between two semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the fall semester. The selected recipient must submit a 1-page essay explaining why they are applying for this scholarship or explaining the meaning of the phrase Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime. Established by Racey Engineering in 2018, this scholarship will be awarded annually to a full or part time student enrolled in the Associate of Science Degree, Engineering Specialization, or the Associate of Applied Science, Engineering Technology program. Racey Engineering funded this scholarship as a means to encourage aspiring engineers as they begin their education. Racey Engineering will consider hiring the student awarded the Racey Engineering Scholarship for a paid engineering internship. Racey Engineering PLLC is a privately held, small business and hub zone engineering and surveying company, located in Luray, Virginia. Established in 2002 from the owner’s initial company arrangements dating to 1994, the company provides a very diverse and broad program of cost-effective and practical engineering and surveying services to its public and private clients throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. These services include civil, structural, mechanical, plumbing, water and wastewater, construction engineering, land surveying, and construction survey (stakeout). The scholarship may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between fall and spring semesters. Satisfactory academic progress must be maintained in order for the recipient to receive the award for the spring semester. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who meets the following criteria: Must be a full or part-time student. Must maintain at least a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Preference is given to a student enrolled in courses leading to an Associate of Science-Engineering Specialization. A student enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science Engineering Technology program will also be considered. Student must have successfully completed with a 3.0 GPA one EGR course (EGR 120, 123, 126 or an EGR elective). Racey Engineering will consider, at Racey’s sole discretion, hiring the student awarded the Racey Engineering Scholarship for a paid engineering internship.

The Rance Lee Spellman Memorial Endowed Scholarship honors a man who lived his beliefs in stewardship of the land, preservation of farming, and mastering of its essential skills. Rance also believed in the human protection of animals and birds. Rance returned from the Vietnam War to run his family farm and construction business in Culpeper County, Virginia. After the death of his parents, he became foreman of Points of View Farm in Rappahannock County, Virginia. There he transformed the abandoned apple orchard and cattle farm into a productive and handsome registered cow/calf operation. After his tragic and sudden death in 1982, his employer, Patricia Saltonstall, established this award in Rance’s memory to foster the recognition and development of farming skills and support services. The Rance Lee Spellman Memorial Award was the first endowment of the Educational Foundation. This annual award was established for the benefit of students seeking to develop the skills necessary to achieve successful productivity in the demanding and vanishing field of family farming. This scholarship was established in 2014 by Dr. Douglas Reeves in honor of his brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Katy Reeves. Katy Reeves is Vice President of Human Resources for Fauquier Health System in Warrenton and was a Board member for the Educational Foundation. Having earned a degree in secondary education from the University of Kansas, Katy taught at the secondary and community college level for six years before entering the Human Resources profession. Steve Reeves is a retired U.S. Army Major General. During the last decade of his career he was responsible for the research, development and acquisition of medical countermeasures and medical devices for chemical and biological defense and emerging infectious diseases. Steve and Katy believe that education and educational opportunities are critical to enable every individual to reach their full potential with the skills necessary for competing in a global economy. In the dynamic health care field, education must teach not only what to think, but how to think and provide a basis for continuous lifelong learning. Education provides the foundation for both individual growth as well as national economic growth and security. In honor of Steve and Katy, Dr. Douglas Reeves established this scholarship to create an opportunity for a student in the Fauquier Region to pursue education in a field relating to health care. A 1952 graduate of James Wood High School, Mr. Dick was a lifelong resident of Frederick County. He was involved in many civic organizations and local and state government, including serving as Chairman of the Frederick County Board of Supervisors and the Frederick County Economic Development Commission. He was a strong and enthusiastic supporter of community colleges, and served as chairman of the Educational Foundation, and as a member of the State Board for Virginia Community Colleges. The Rotary Club of Strasburg is a service-based organization that promotes community, national and international service projects as part of Rotary International. The organization funds scholarships as part of the four avenues of service in the community. The Virginia Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 by the Virginia Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary organization dedicated to empowering women educators to advance inclusion, educational excellence, altruism, and world understanding. In 2022, after the passing of one of the chapter’s sisters, Ruth Anne Troxell, the scholarship name was changed to the Ruth Anne Troxell Memorial Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship to honor the memory of one who embodied the principles of the Alpha Delta Kappa organization through her tireless dedication to the teaching profession, her altruistic endeavors, and her spirit of kindness and joy. The purposes of the Alpha Delta Kappa organization are: To honor outstanding women educators. This scholarship was established in 1997 by Starr Johnson to honor her father, Saul Robinson. Mr. Robinson served 18 years on the College Board. This scholarship was established in honor of Shelley Scott Edwards, a former student who died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. A graduate of Southview Sylvania High School in Ohio and Old Dominion University, Scott was a safety engineer who enjoyed both photography and sports until his death on October 8, 2005. The scholarship award, not to exceed $1,500, may be applied toward tuition, books and/or fees and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester. In 2017, Stephen and Karen Wisecarver established an endowed scholarship to support graduates of the Middletown Campus as they continue their academic studies at a 4-year institution. The Wisecarvers are particularly interested in supporting Laurel Ridge graduates who would like to work eventually in higher education—at a community college in particular. Steve and Karen Wisecarver are retired employees of the College, having worked at the Middletown Campus. Steve was a psychology professor and Karen was an ILL and catalog specialist for the Paul Wolk Library. Karl and Kyle Pretch have established a scholarship honoring wife and mother Teddie J. Pretsch with an endowed scholarship to assist a deserving student on the Fauquier Campus. Teddie enjoyed life-long learning and took classes on the Fauquier Campus periodically. She was a gifted artist, loved to read and to learn new things. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the fall semester. This scholarship was established in 2020 by the Terrace Club of Winchester, Virginia, to support a recent graduate of either James Wood High School or Handley High School. This scholarship is being established to enable qualifying students to achieve their goal of a career in a health profession or education. Four Yang family members began their academic pursuits of these professions in community college, two graduating from Lord Fairfax Community College, now Laurel Ridge Community College. Satisfactory academic progress must be maintained in order for the recipient to receive the award for the second semester. This scholarship is awarded annually by the Melton family and the Shenandoah Audubon Society in memory of Tim Melton. Tim Melton’s love for birds and nature was nurtured further when he became a student in the natural resources curriculum at the College. He filled his life with extraordinary enthusiasm, commitment and effort, and his unconquerable spirit would not let his illness limit him. Despite failing strength, he continued to teach natural history at a day camp during the last summer of his life. While Tim passed away before graduating from the College, his legacy continues through others’ lasting memories of him and the Tim Melton Memorial-Shenandoah Audubon Scholarship. The award will provide assistance with tuition, books and/or fees, and it will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the fall semester. The scholarship recipient is strongly encouraged to participate in Shenandoah Audubon activities. The Town of Warrenton Scholarship was established in 2015 to encourage students who live within the town limits of Warrenton who demonstrate financial need to pursue an education that will increase job readiness skills. Jack O. Crooke and his wife, Ingrid J. Crooke, established the Valley Masonic Endowed Scholarship in 1998. Members of local Blue Lodges of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Royal Arch Chapter, Knight Templar Commanderies, Shenandoah Valley Scottish Rite Club have contributed to the Valley Masonic Endowed Scholarship Fund along with members of the Order of the Eastern Star. This scholarship can be utilized for tuition and/or the purchase of textbooks. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.2 in the fall semester. The Veteran Emergency Assistance Funds are designed to address exceptional financial hardship faced by Veteran students caused by recent unexpected life events that could affect their continuing education. Examples of emergency situations include, but are not limited to, house fire, unanticipated medical issues, homelessness, unanticipated marital separation, change in income, and/or job loss. The Foundation has several funds established specifically with the purpose of assisting Veterans. In most cases, assistance may come in the form of a grant, scholarship, or a loan. To be eligible for emergency funds, you must have: earned a 2.0 cumulative GPA be enrolled in at least 6 or more credit hours currently Preference: students who have successfully completed a semester. Students applying for Veteran Emergency Assistance Funds understand that: funds are generally not used for tuition, professional development courses, or other school-imposed fees; however, exceptions can sometimes be made. funds will not be issued to students. Instead, the funds will be issued directly to the vendor. applications are reviewed throughout the year; therefore there is no deadline for applying dependents and spouses are not eligible to receive these funds emergency funding is only available to one student per family emergency funds cannot be transferred to other students. Only the person who applied for and was awarded the funds is eligible to use them. If awarded, please note: Awards will be made based on the availability of funds and appropriateness of the request. Applicants will be notified via email of the decision and will be given the steps to accept the funds, if approved. Students are required to submit a thank you letter to the Foundation. The Veteran’s Emergency Loan for Books Fund was established in 2010 by Jim Shannon, an Adjunct Professor of Information Technology at the College. Many donors have since supported this fund, including AMVETS and private citizens. These funds are an interest free loan; therefore, the recipient is expected to pay back the loan after the financial hardship has passed so funds are available to assist other Veterans. The fund allows students who are Veterans to apply for monies to address exceptional financial hardship that could affect their ability to purchase textbooks for their classes. Examples of emergency situations include, but are not limited to: delay in Veteran’s benefits, house fire, unanticipated medical issues, homelessness, unanticipated marital separation, change in income, and/or job loss. Students may apply for funds once per academic year. Applications are reviewed throughout the year; therefore, there is no deadline for applying. Funds may only be used to purchase required textbooks for a current class. Funds will not be issued to students. Instead, an account will be established at the College Bookstore to allow the student to purchase the textbooks. To apply for monies from this fund, students must: be a Veteran, Active Reservist or Guardsmen have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA be enrolled during the current semester for three (3) or more credit hours In addition: Funds will be awarded based upon the availability of funds and the appropriateness of the request. The students are required to submit a thank you letter. No funds will be issued without the thank you letter. If the letter is not received by the given deadline, the loan will be forfeited. The account will be established at the College Bookstore within ten (10) business days after the student’s thank you letter is received. A proper identification, such as student ID or driver’s license, is required to access the College Bookstore account. The loan cannot be used for other students. Only the person who applied for and was awarded the funds is eligible to use them.

The W. Michael Larrick Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2014 by Michael and Britney Larrick in memory of their father, W. Michael (Mike) Larrick, and his desire for his children to get the best education possible. Mike Larrick was born in 1961 at the Winchester Memorial Hospital. After graduating from John Handley High School in 1980 he married and had two kids. He continued to work and raise his family in Winchester. Mike Larrick was a hard working blue collar man who wore his heart on his sleeve and wanted nothing more in the world than to see his children succeed. Like many parents he worked unwaveringly in the pursuit of a better life for his children. Mike tragically passed on February 19th 2004 in a work related accident. After his death family, friends, and Mike’s employer all contributed and financially assisted both children so they could achieve the goal their father had set for them. The W. Michael Larrick Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in memory of his hard work and dedication to his children’s education. The goal of this scholarship fund is to allow others who have lost a parent or guardian the chance to pursue higher education. The scholarship will be awarded to full-time students who have lost a parent or primary guardian and demonstrate financial need as determined by the financial aid office. Recipients of this award must complete the scholarship application and essay as well as maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the fall semester. The Wayne and Arlene L. Maul Carbaugh Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Wayne Carbaugh in loving memory of his wife, Arlene. All her life, Arlene was a servant of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She played the piano, viola, hand bells, and organ with a deep love for church and classical music. Arlene was gifted with a beautiful and angelic voice, which she graciously used to sing praises to God. She had a great and courageous love for life. She graduated from Monroe Business College and worked as a trust officer for thirty-three years, retiring in 2001. In her “retirement”, she worked as a receptionist for The Willows at Meadow Branch for ten years. The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and books, and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. This scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Mr. Wilkie Hunt in 1993. Mr. Hunt was instrumental in bringing the College to this community and was the first Chairman of the College Board. This endowed scholarship was established in honor and memory of William E. Bridgeforth Jr. by his family and friends. Mr. Bridgeforth and his wife, Ruth, generously supported all the fundraisers and friend-raisers of the College. They donated an original John Chumley painting to be raffled and used as an incentive piece in the College’s first annual giving drive. Over $30,000 was generated with this raffle; thus the endowment was created. Mr. Bridgeforth passed away suddenly in January, 1993. He was an advocate of higher education as evidenced by his generous contributions to the College and James Madison University. His family continues to support the educational needs of their community. This scholarship will provide assistance to be applied towards tuition, fees, and books. The scholarship award will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. This scholarship was endowed by the Dalke family in memory of their parents, William F. Dalke Jr. (1920-1991) and Kathryn Dalke (1921-2007), on the 50th anniversary of the Family Drive-In Theatre. William F. Dalke Jr. was a lifelong resident of Woodstock, Va. After leaving the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II, he went into business with his father, William F. Dalke Sr., who, as a young immigrant, established Dalke’s Valley Theatres in 1912. Together, they operated movie theatres in Woodstock, Strasburg, Edinburg and New Market, with the Family Drive-In near Stephens City opening in 1956. Kathryn Stover Shaffer Dalke grew up in Maurertown in a family descended from the earliest settlers in the Shenandoah Valley. Bill and Kathryn were active in the community. Bill served as the mayor of Woodstock from 1959 to 1970. Both believed in making college education opportunities available as a part of bringing success to individuals and the community. Scholarships will be awarded annually to full- and/or part-time students who demonstrate financial need. Friends and family members of Bill Remington established a scholarship in his honor following his death in September, 1994. Mr. Remington was a strong supporter of the College and served as Volunteer Director of Development, Educational Foundation Board Member, Chairman of the 1993 Annual Truck Party and Chairman of the 1993-94 Annual Fund Drive. This award will provide assistance with tuition, fees, and books. The award will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters.
