Scholarships at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

The DoD is seeking rising junior and senior (third and fourth year) undergraduate, and graduate / doctoral students who are interested in full-ride scholarships for concentrated studies in cybersecurity and other cyber-related disciplines. Students selected for the program will receive full scholarships. This requires the student to agree to serve one year of service to the DoD, upon graduation, for each year or partial year of scholarship received, in addition to the internship identified below. An opportunity also exists for scholarship payback through military service. Individuals choosing to enlist or accept a commission to serve on active duty in one of the Military Services shall incur a service obligation of a minimum of 4 years on active duty in that Service upon graduation. The Military Services may establish a service obligation longer than 4 years, depending on the occupational specialty and type of enlistment or commissioning program selected. Traditional Guardsmen and Reserve Soldiers are eligible to apply. Scholarship payback for this group is two years of service for each year of scholarship received. During breaks in their academic studies, Cyber Scholars will receive progressive, hands-on experience in information security internships. In return, scholars must agree to some restrictions and obligations regarding curriculum, GPA, and pre- and post- program employment. If all conditions are met, Cyber Scholars will receive full-time conditional/permanent positions in Components of the DoD upon program completion. Rising junior and senior undergraduates, master’s and doctoral candidates, who are U.S. citizens and are at least 18 years of age are eligible for consideration for the program. Students selected as CyberScholars will receive the full cost of tuition, books (from the institution/degree specific required book list, not books which are optional for the class), required fees (including health care), and a stipend to cover room and board. The stipend levels are $25,000 for undergraduate students and $30,000 for graduate (Master’s/PhD) students. Disabled students may receive additional allowances. This scholarship recognizes students who engage in experiential learning opportunities. One awardee will be selected to receive a scholarship in the amount of $1,000. VT undergraduate student in any major who is participating in guided experiential learning opportunity at Virginia Tech including, but not limited to: study abroad, unpaid internships with nonprofits or NGOs, undergraduate research opportunities, etc. Preference will be given to students whose experience combines more than one mode of experiential learning, such as research abroad.

Funded by Virginia Tech, the Virginia Tech Tribal Match Scholarship is a one-time scholarship for eligible Native American students receiving scholarships from a Virginia Recognized Tribal Scholarship Program, including the Virginia Tribal Education Consortium. As part of the application process students must provide confirmation of a Virginia Recognized Tribal Scholarship Programs award. Upon approval, the university will match the scholarship funding 1-1 per applicant up to $2,500 annually. Students receiving a renewable Tribal Scholarship shall have their scholarship matched annually.

The scholarship will be awarded to UP TO 4 incoming freshman in the amount of $1100 each per year, acknowledging that the amount might increase depending on the number of awards. This award MAY be continued for up to one (1) more year. It is open to those who major in either Religion and Culture (RLCL) or Humanities for Public Service (HPS), but preference must be given to RLCL majors.

The Yellow Ribbon Program at Virginia Tech provides a total of 20 scholarships on a first-come, first-serve basis to out-of-state undergraduates who are utilizing Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits. The amount of the Virginia Tech Yellow Ribbon Scholarship is up to $2,500 for the academic year, or $1,250 each fall and spring semesters, of the unmet tuition and fees for each term. As the Department of Veterans Affairs will then match the contribution made by the institution, this scholarship could yield as much as $5,000 in total tuition and fees benefits per academic year for approved students. To be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Scholarship Program students must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in a VA-approved academic program at Virginia Tech, and must be paying out-of-state tuition. The student must be 100% eligible for, and using the Post 9/11 GI Bill, cannot be on active duty, and must have Chapter 33 GI Bill entitlement remaining. Current Yellow Ribbon recipients can maintain the scholarship. To retain the scholarship, students must reapply every academic year (before Fall), remain continuously enrolled at Virginia Tech (excluding the summer/winter terms), maintain good academic standing, and continue to meet listed eligibility requirements.

Annual distributions are to be used to provide whole or partial scholarships to students who are members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. Consideration of a scholarship shall be based primarily upon merit with financial need receiving secondary consideration.

This scholarship is available to students majoring within Apparel, Housing, and Resource Management, studying Fashion Merchandising and Design. Preference shall be given to the students from the Shenandoah Valley area of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This scholarship was established in memory and in honor of Caitlin Millar Hammaren who died during the tragic shooting at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007. The Charles R. Drake Scholarship is available to freshmen who are attending Virginia Tech. You must be a Virginia resident, have a minimum 1000 SAT score and a minimum 3.0 GPA. Also, you must be in the upper 25 percent of your high school class, be from a rural background and plan to work in the agricultural industry after graduation. This award is renewable if your GPA is maintained above 3.0.

Funded by Virginia Tech, the CoLab Digital Tech Credential Scholarship is a one time scholarship awarded to students currently pursuing or intending to pursue one of the Digital Tech Credentials. These credentials are earned by students pursuing the Data and Decisions Pathways minor or the BIT Cybersecurity Management and Analysis major. Recipients must have an interest in pursuing a Digital Tech career, have completed at least one course towards the Digital Generalist or Specialist Credential, and demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA.

The Glen E. Salmon Scholarship offers $5,000 for the following academic year to one student per year. Glen Salmon Scholars are 3rd, 4th, or 5th year undergraduate students majoring within either the College of Science or the College of Engineering who also have a minor or second major outside the colleges of science and/or engineering. The Peacock-Harper Culinary History Friends Committee awards scholarships honoring Janet Cameron and Jean Phillips. Preference is given to applicants whose scholarly pursuits encompass topics related to material in the Peacock-Harper Culinary History Collection in the University Library’s Special Collections section. Research and interests may include human nutrition and foods, culinary history, agricultural history, family nutrition, family nutrition history, food culture, household equipment, kitchen design, social history, ethnic traditions, gender studies, or other related topics. If applicants have not outlined a thesis or dissertation yet, they should have interests that encompass topics related to material in the Collection. The Sonny Merryman, Inc. Public Pupil Transportation Scholarship is open to undergraduate students at Virginia Tech. Your parent, grandparent or legal guardian must be directly employed or retired from direct employment with a Virginia public school pupil transportation operation, such as school bus drivers, public school bus technician or public school bus dispatcher. Selection will also be based on demonstrated financial need.

The Southeast Produce Council (STARS) scholarship seeks CALS applicants who are rising seniors in undergraduate majors related to the growing and marketing of produce and related products who also hold a minimum 3.2 GPA or higher. The Austin Excellence Fund for Veterans was established by Paul and Linda Austin to enhance educational programs for student veterans at Virginia Tech. Funded by Virginia Tech, the Virginia Community College System Transfer Achievement Scholarship provides financial assistance to selected full time undergraduate students with Virginia residency transferring to Virginia Tech after completion of an associate degree at a Virginia Community College System institution. Students apply through Scholarship Central and must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as part of the application process. Scholarship awards include one award equivalent to tuition and mandatory fees and five awards equivalent to one half of tuition and mandatory fees. Human Development graduate or undergraduate students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 overall who have supported the intergenerational Neighbors Growing Together program through their research, service-learning, field study, paid work, or volunteer work with the Adult Day Services and/or the Child Development Center for Learning and Research.
