Scholarships at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

This $1,000 scholarship is given to a full-time undergraduate in the College of Letters & Science with documented financial need who is a first generation student. Students who have an up-to-date Panther Scholarship Portal General Application and the College of Letters & Science Scholarships and Awards Application will be considered, typically in spring each year between February and April. This federally-funded fellowship is awarded to undergraduate students of any major studying Portuguese at UWM or abroad during the academic year. Students must be ready to enroll in third semester Portuguese or higher by the Fall semester of the year they receive the fellowship. They must be a full-time student during the fellowship period and be enrolled in a Portuguese language course and a Latin American/Caribbean area studies course each semester of the fellowship. Other eligibility requirements include: U.S. citizenship or permanent residency a completed FAFSA on file with Financial Aid a demonstrated record of academic success The fellowship is valued at up to $15,000 for study at UWM or abroad at an approved overseas program. Up to $5,000 for tuition and a $2,500 stipend is allocated to the recipient each semester of the fellowship. Studying abroad is not required. For those choosing to study abroad, all study abroad programs must be approved by the U.S. Department of Education and students will need to apply for their study abroad program through the Study Abroad Office at UWM. Applications are accepted each year in January for the following school year. For example, applications will be accepted in January 2023 for the 2023-24 school year. Students must complete the FAFSA and can do that even before applying for FLAS. It is recommended that students complete their FAFSA by Dec. 31 each year. The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee offers a limited number of scholarships in the amount of $250-$500 for undergraduates (sophomores and above) with a demonstrated interest in Latin American and/or Caribbean studies. The scholarship may be used for UWM sponsored semester-long, year-long, or short-term (Winter, Summer) study abroad programs in Latin American or the Caribbean, or for other academic opportunities in the region that can be accepted for UWM credit. Students from any major or field of study are invited to apply. Virtual study abroad/internships are also acceptable. Anthropology graduate students who are currently enrolled in (or recently completed the requirements for) the Museum Studies Graduate Certificate Program at UWM are eligible to apply for this $1,750 scholarship, which provides financial support so that the student can complete an internship at the Milwaukee Public Museum during Summer 2022. The internship depends on project and supervisor availability and may require previous experience and/or classes. The intern will be required to commit at least 150 hours of internship work during the semester. The student may apply for credit for the internship, if desirable.

This scholarship is given to a declared History major who has taken at least 12 credits in History and with demonstrated academic excellence. Qualified applications will have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, junior standing and will be enrolled full-time. Scholarships may be renewable for one additional year if the student still meets the criteria, and scholarships will be valued at $5,000 per year. This scholarship is funded through a generous gift from history professor J. David Hoeveler. The Midwest Association for Financial Aid Administrators (MASFAA) acknowledges that many students face financial, academic, and social barriers that complicate the completion of their education. As financial aid professionals, we believe all students should be granted access to an affordable education to achieve their education and career goals. The MASFAA Access Scholarship seeks to support students facing barriers to their financial, academic, and social success. In 2022, MASFAA will provide a one-time $500 scholarship to offer financial support towards a student’s tuition, fees, books and supplies, housing, and transportation costs. All students (certificate, associate, undergraduate, graduate, or professional) from the MASFAA region (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, West Virginia, or Wisconsin) are welcome to apply. The recipient of the MASFAA Scholarship will be announced mid-October.

The UWM Urban Studies Program has developed a grant program for Urban Studies majors and Urban Studies certificate students. This program is designed to help students pursue community-based activities that further racial equity and racial justice, broadly defined, in Milwaukee. Grants for up to $500 are available to support work on a project with a community partner or partners. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis except for the period of September 15 through October 15 when the UWM Panther Scholarship Portal is closed for annual software maintenance. Applicants should notify Jamie Harris (jmh@uwm.edu) when they apply so that your application is viewed promptly. Dr. Harris can also be contacted directly with any questions. Examples of projects include but are not limited to internships, volunteer positions, community organizing, urban gardening, and mentoring or tutoring of elementary or high-school students. Funding may be used for student compensation for unpaid work (such as unpaid internships), supplies and expenses, travel to and from community work sites, and other expenses associated with the community project. Projects must include a community partner, such as an organization or agency hosting internships or volunteer positions.

The Wisconsin Department of Children & Families Scholarship Program awards scholarships up to $5,000 for youth who have been in out-of-home care (OHC) placement in: foster home, group home, residential care center or court ordered Kinship Care

#TheDREAMerNextDoor Scholarship Program is designed for currently matriculating DREAMers who wish to achieve the American Dream, but because of their DREAMer status, are ineligible for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). CRITERIA: (1) Have been accepted to a 2- or 4- year institution of higher education; (2) are currently enrolled in a 2- or 4- year institution of higher education; or (3) are currently pursuing a professional degree; and (4) Have a current DACA or TPS authorization, or do not otherwise qualify for DACA or TPS authorization and have undocumented status.

This award is given to a history graduate student with demonstrated academic merit. The donors to this scholarship wish to support students who might otherwise not have the opportunity to pursue higher education. This scholarship varies in amount from $500 to $1,500. The Ahmad Family Scholarship was established by history alumna Diana Ahmad, currently Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor, specializing in the history of the American West, at Missouri University of Science & Technology. Dr. Ahmad is a Milwaukee native and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at UWM. The Aldrian Guszkowski Scholarship is available to students in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. You must enrolled in the M.Arch or M.Arch/MUP program and demonstrate academic and design merit. You must also have an interest in the design and construction of senior and multi-family developments to be eligible for this award.

Alice Siu-Fun Leung earned a BS Degree with a major in Mathematics from UWM in January, 1973. In her will she donated funds to establish an award for outstanding UWM undergraduate students in Mathematical Sciences. Applicants must be UWM math majors or intended majors (includes Actuarial Science, Data Science, and Applied Math and Computer Science) with demonstrated academic merit (minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA) and the support of a math professors. The Alois Bulawa Scholarship is available to Hispanic junior and senior students at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. You must be majoring in business to be eligible for this award.

The Amelia Lucas Trust Fund Award is open to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who are studying communication. You must be conducting research to qualify for this award. Selection is based on the quality and level of student participation in the research and its presentation.

The Avi Shaked and Babs Waldman Engineering Scholarship is open to students majoring in engineering or computer science at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. You must have a cumulative 3.5 GPA and have an ACT score of at least 25, with a minimum math score of 28 to be eligible for this award.

The Banquet Scholarship Fund is available to students majoring in engineering or computer science at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. You must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and an ACT composite score of at least 25 and a minimum math score of 28 to be eligible for this award.

The Berquist Study Abroad Scholarship supports undergraduate students from any major leading to a bachelor’s degree going on an approved study abroad experience outside of the United States. Preference is given to students who are first generation and/or have documented financial need. Minimum GPA is a 2.5 cumulative. Applications are typically accepted in November/December for Spring study abroad and in February/March for Summer and Fall study abroad.

For undergraduate students pursuing a Real Estate Certificate. Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be a Wisconsin resident. Preference will be given to student parents or students with significant responsibilities for caring for household members and to first-generation college students who are graduates of an MPS high school.

Funding opportunity for Zilber School of Public Health PhD students. Purpose is to support excellence in research and academics. Funds can be used for academic and research expenses at the awardees discretion.

Merit awards for graduate students in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry engaged in exceptional research activities. No application and recipients are selected by faculty members.

This is a scholarship awarded to students whose parent/guardian died in the line of duty while serving as a public safety officer. This could include police, firefighter, emergency medical technician, or other individuals who qualify for Public Safety Officers Benefits (PSOB)*. This scholarship would qualify the student for the maximum Federal Pell Grant allowable for the award year. *This scholarship does not include children of active duty military members who died in the line of duty. To qualify for this scholarship, a student must be Pell-eligible and have a Pell-eligible estimated family contribution (EFC), and be less than 24 years of age or enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of his or her parent’s or guardian’s death. In subsequent award years, the student continues to be eligible for the scholarship, as long as the student has a Pell-eligible EFC and continues to be an eligible student. All Title IV aid awarded to such eligible students must be based on an EFC of zero without regard to the student’s calculated EFC. Thus, the student is eligible for the maximum Pell Grant for his or her enrollment status and cost of attendance. In addition, the student’s eligibility for Direct Loans and for Campus-Based program aid must be based on an EFC of zero.

The Cialdini Fellowship provides financial support to exceptional doctoral students in the Department of Psychology. In addition to their departmental teaching/research/project assistantship salaries, each Cialdini Fellow will receive a stipend of $5,000 per year. Contingent on satisfactory progress and maintenance of good standing in the program, each awardee’s $5,000 fellowship will be renewable annually for a total of four years of support (a total of $20,000). Recipients are selected by faculty and there is no application.

CouponBirds has implemented a “Help to Save” scholarship for high school and college students who need help with their tuition fees. This program requires the participants to upload a 2-3 minute video (no longer than 5 minutes) about how to save money with CouponBirds. Individuals with the best ideas and responses will be chosen to give a presentation at our site, and the person with the most intriguing ideas will receive a grand prize.

This award recognizes outstanding accomplishments by graduate students in the Department of English.

The Dave Edwards Scholarship is funded by generous gifts from friends and family of Dave Edwards at the time of his retirement. Dave was the long-time director of WUWM public radio. The scholarship is given to a journalism major with demonstrated financial need, full-time status, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and who is a first generation student. Preference is given to students with career aspirations in radio or broadcast journalism. Applications are typically accepted in spring each year between February and April. The David and Cynthia Kahler Scholarship is available to students in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. You must be an M.Arch or M.Arch/MUP student and demonstrate design excellence, academic merit and financial need to be eligible for this award.

The primary purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the School of Education. The scholarship is based on being an undergraduate enrolled in the School of Education, a graduate of a H.S. in the city of Milwaukee.

To provide scholarships to Incoming Graduate students in the Lubar School of Business enrolled in a master’s degree program (MBA or MS, excluding EMBA). Student must have attended LSB Yocket webinar prior to their admission to the Lubar School of Business, cannot hold any form of assistantship, athletic scholarship, or equivalent during period of scholarship, may not have received assistance or referral from an agent for admission to the university, and must maintain a 3.0 GPA to receive second semester payment of scholarship.

To provide scholarships to incoming Graduate students that are full-time, non-resident, enrolled in one of the master’s programs at the Lubar School of Business (MBA or MS, excluding EMBA). Student may not hold any form of assistantship, athletic scholarship, or equivalent during the period of the scholarship and must maintain 3.0 GPA to receive second semester award.

The Dell'Agnese Travel Scholarship is available to students in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. You must be a Level 2 or graduate student planning to enrolled in an eligible foreign study program to be eligible for this award.

Multiple awards are given for outstanding performance in chemistry research, coursework, and/or student teaching. The Department will notify students when various competitions are open for entry.

This merit scholarship is given to a declared economics major who has excelled in intermediate economics. Preference is given to a student who is active in the Economics Club. No application is needed; the recipient is chosen by the faculty in the Department of Economics.

Award in recognition of academic achievement in English. Eligible candidates will be full-time students with a declared or intended major in English, a minimum 3.25 GPA, and standing as a sophomore, junior or senior as of August 31. Students graduating in May or August are not eligible.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences periodically awards meritorious majors and graduate students enrolled in one of the department’s degree-granting programs.

When funds are available, this award is given to graduate students in the Department of Physics who demonstrate excellence in research as chosen by the faculty. There is no application process and recipients are chosen by the physics faculty.

The Design Council Scholarship is available to students in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. You must be enrolled in the M.Arch or M.Arch/MUP program and demonstrate academic merit to be eligible for this award.

The Don Walker Memorial Scholarship is funded by generous gifts from the Milwaukee Press Club which includes many former colleagues of Don. This scholarship honors the legacy of Donald L. Walker, an alumnus of Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was an editor and reporter for the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and a founding member of the Milwaukee Newspaper Guild. The scholarship is given to a JAMS major on the journalism track, with demonstrated financial need, full-time status, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The Dr. Donna Decker scholarship was established in 2017 by the family and friends of Dr. Donna Decker, a former instructor in the Journalism, Advertising and Media Studies (JAMS) Department who passed away at a young age. Donna was known as a passionate and engaging teacher with a bright spirit. She obtained her PhD in British Literature in the midst of her original cancer diagnosis and went on to teach at both Marquette University and UWM. Dr. Decker’s love of literature and journalism is reflected in this joint scholarship which is given to one English major and one Journalism major each year Eligible students will be full-time students with junior or senior standing and a declared major in either English or journalism. The selected student will have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. The Department of Anthropology periodically awards scholarships to Anthropology graduate students who will be in their second year of the Museum Studies Graduate Certificate Program. The scholarships are intended to partially support students’ research (e.g., travel expenses, supplies/equipment, conference fees). The Durward C. Layde Memorial Scholarship is given to a chemistry or biochemistry major with junior or senior standing, academic merit, and demonstrated financial need as shown on the FAFSA.

The E. Paul and Jane Humke International Mathematics Scholarship is given to a student for participation in the study abroad program in mathematics in Budapest, Hungary. More information about the study abroad semester can be found at: https://budapestsemesters.com/apply-2/. The study abroad experience can take place in Spring 2022, Summer 2022 or Fall 2022 prior to graduation from UWM. Eligible students will be math majors with at least sophomore standing and a strong record of academic success. Students should have completed one semester of real analysis or abstract algebra prior to going abroad in order to successfully complete the coursework in Budapest. The student offered the scholarship must still apply and be accepted to the Budapest program in order to receive the scholarship. The Elaina Berg Award is given as part of the annual WGS Paper and Project competition and recognizes outstanding research by a graduate student on a topic related to women’s and gender studies.

Graduate students in the Department of History who have not received any other award (including a TA or RA-ship) are eligible to be reviewed for this award. The award honors the late Ellen Healy, an alumna and onetime teaching assistant in the Department. The Environmental Internship Scholarship provides funding for a Conservation and Environmental Science major or minor to engage in a for-credit internship. Eligible students will have an internship related to environmental science or conservation lined up or in the process of being secured. The criteria are: Plans for completion of a 3-credit internship at an organization with an environmental science or conservation mission A declared Conservation and Environmental Science major or minor Minimum 2.75 GPA Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need as shown on the FAFSA Applicants need to thoroughly complete the UWM general scholarship application including the activities and work experience being sure to include all information that you wish to share with the review committee about your activities related to conservation and environmental science. The George L.N. Meyer, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is open to incoming freshmen at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee who are enrolled in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. This scholarship is for an incoming freshman who has been admitted to the Lubar School of Business and who graduated from a high school in the Milwaukee Public School system. The Hearst Foundation Scholarship is open to full - time minority students majoring in engineering or computer science at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. You must rank in the top third of your graduating class or have a cumulative 3.5 GPA, you must have an ACT score of at least 25, with a minimum math score of 28 to be eligible for this award.

The Helen A. Berry Memorial Scholarship is given to a student accepted into The Washington Center internship program for an experiential learning internship in Washington DC. The Héctor Colón Scholarship is established to provide an incoming freshman who graduated from Bruce Guadalupe Middle School and participated in United Community Center’s Pre-College Program- The Spot with a renewable scholarship for up to four years provided they continue to meet the renewability criteria. The minimum high school GPA is 2.50 or greater.

At Intoxalock, our overall mission is to ensure safer roads for all by preventing drunk driving. Whether our ignition interlock devices are being used to fulfill a mandatory legal requirement or as an additional measure to help prevent drunk driving, the main goal is the same. Ignition interlock devices help separate drinking from driving and are effective at cutting down the number of alcohol-related traffic injuries and fatalities. In an effort to expand our message of drunk driving prevention, we are happy to offer our $3,000 Drunk Driving Prevention Scholarship to an individual who is currently attending, or has been accepted for enrollment, at any accredited two or four year U.S. college or university. She then went on to UWM to receive a Masters in Library Science. Marlene served as a school librarian in the New Berlin and Wauwatosa School Systems. Marlene was a member of Pi Lambda Theta at UWM. She had the highest regard for the professors who offered both challenges and opportunities. The Morris and Miriam Marden Graduate Award in Mathematics is given to the best paper written on a mathematical topic by a graduate student as deemed by a committee of faculty members. The paper need not be written specifically for the Marden Award; papers originally written for coursework, independent study, professional reports, dissertation, or other reasons are acceptable.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Roberto Hernández Center (RHC) has established the Latino Student Fund as a source of emergency funding for currently enrolled Latino/a/x students who face unexpected expenses that affect their continued pursuit of an undergraduate degree. The Tinsley Helton Dissertation Fellowship is given to a student in the Department of English studying Literary Studies, Creative Writing, or Composition who is in the dissertation phase of their degree. Awards given in spring are for the following school year. E.G. applications reviewed in Spring 2022 are for Fall 2022.

This scholarship is given to a student in geosciences who meets these criteria with preference given to a student who is an active member of the Wisconsin Geological Society for at least one year. Graduate level student in Geosciences Demonstrated academic merit Students who have an up-to-date Panther Scholarship Portal General Application and the College of Letters & Science Scholarships and Awards Application will be considered, typically in spring each year between February and April. Students should thoroughly fill out the Panther Scholarship Portal General Application and the College of Letters & Science Scholarships and Awards Application.

The Wlaydslaw Cieszynski English Fellowship is given to an outstanding graduate student in the Department of English who is focusing their studies in the area of creative writing. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required, and preference is given to students are first-generation college students. Eligible students will also be in their last year of study.

Women’s and Gender Studies award support students with demonstrated academic excellence who are enrolled in the Women’s and Gender Studies program.
